Shekamaley, a small place near Kumbra, located 10 KMs away from Puttur, on the way to Sullia, is very much an educational hub with institutions such as Markazul Huda Women’s Collage and Karnataka Islamic Academy (KIA) Boys School existing in the vicinity.
The menace of dowry has been troubling the Muslim society for quite some time now. In spite of numerous articles, talks, sermons, and discussions, the evil practice somehow has managed to hold on. But as they say, every cloud has a silver lining and the Mohiyuddeen Jumma Masjid Jamath Committee of Shekamaley village, has provided just that.
Over 90 houses are covered under the Jamath. As pleasing a news as it could be, the Jamath has declared that it will strive to become a ‘Dowry Free’ village. In a general body meeting held on Sunday, April 11, a unanimous decision was taken in this regard. According to the decision taken by the Jamath committee, nobody will attend those Nikahs where incidents of dowry being taken are reported (even if it is in the form of Jewellery).
Coastaldigest.com spoke to the Committee members of the Jamath.
M.A Abbas Sa’adi, Imam of Mohiyuddeen Jumma Masjid, Shekamaley, expressing his opinion said that most families in the Muslim community are suffering from financial problems. The community is gradually drifting away from the Islamic boundaries and is involving in anti Islamic activites such as dowry system. However, youngsters having social awareness have decided to take up the matter seriously. This system has to be implemented in all Jamaths and the Ulamas and Qazis have to come together and take a unanimous decision to root out dowry, he said.
S.P Basheer, Secretary of the committee, opined that the dowry system is anti-Islamic. When the issue of dowry was raised in the meeting, the committee members discussed the matter for about 90 minutes and unanimously, the exceptional decision was declared, he informed. If we get any information of dowry being taken after the marriage, the person concerned will not belong to our Jamath from thereon. But to execute this, a greater inspired leadership is needed, he said.
Coastaldigest.com asked a few questions to K.P Ahmed Haji, President of the Masjid Committee and President of Karnataka Islamic Academy. Here’s what he had to say:
CD: What inspired your Jamath to take this all important decision?
Ahmed Haji: Once I visited Vaynad (in Kerala) and heard the heart rendering problems of a couple of unmarried women who were around 35-40 years old. I was moved by what they had to say. We decided to impose a ban on the dowry system from our Jamath.
CD team: Do you think it will be tough to actually put this decision into practice?
Ahmed Haji: If members of the Jamath value our leadership, definitely the judgement which has been taken by the Committee will take a practical form. There is a need to get everyone thinking towards one direction and this should happen in every Jamath.
CD team: Do you consider this decision to be a model one for other Jamaths as well?
Ahmed Haji: Of course! This perhaps is the first such decision taken by a Masjid Jamath in Karnataka State and it’s my appeal that this act is highlighted so that it inspires other Jamaths too.
S.M Ahmed Basheer Haji, President, K.P Muhammad Swadiq, Vice President, Ismail Haji Kaudichar, S.M Siddeeq Haji, Treasurer and many others were present during that historic meeting.
The village has, in the past, seen its share of disasters that stemmed out of the evil practice of dowry. A father of 4 daughters and 2 sons died after marrying off two of his daughters. After his death, the family members sold the house and married the third one off. The fourth one is yet to get married and the family is residing in a quarters of 10 cents area.
In another incident, a father of 5 daughters had committed suicide, due to his inability to get his daughters married off.
Many such incidents have troubled the village in more ways than one. However, with this remarkable step taken by the Masjid Committee of the village, one hopes that life turns out to be much better in the days to come.
