The process of census in the State has begun already. Although all Censuses are important, this one carries that extra bit of significance as the data collected through the census would be used by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). If anyone fails to get into this databank, he/she would be left out of UIDAI, regarded as a key aspect in determining the citizenship for every individual. Such a person may well be suspected in the eye of police forces.
On the basis of this census, everyone will get an identity card which would be demanded by the authorities for various important purposes such as opening of bank account, taking loans, obtaining scholarships etc.
Moreover, all the government welfare schemes would be made on the basis of this census. Therefore, people who have been denied their rights for decades, especially Muslims who are most backward, are required to be alert so that correct information about them enters into the Government registers. Many deserving Dalits and backward classes are being deprived of their rights because of inaccurate information regarding them in Government records as well.
One of the reasons why this census becomes quintessential for citizens in general and Muslims in particular is the determination of identity as the Citizen of India. If this census is neglected and furnishing of accurate information not taken seriously, many a Muslims may even run a danger of being suspected as ‘infiltrates’ from across the border by the authorities.
The process of census will be completed within two sessions. In the first session, families, buildings and houses will be counted while in second session information regarding people will be registered.
Vilayat Ali, social activist from Patna, said “The census 2011 is important for everyone. For Muslims it becomes more significant as it will help to address their social, economic and educational backwardness because no policy will bear any fruits unless it is made on the basis of correct data.”
“Everyone should work for this purpose by using their resources. Newspapers should publish articles and news to make people aware of the importance of the census, social activists should work at street level to educate Muslims about it and imam of mosques should use their Juma speeches to urge Muslims to take part in the census process.”
He also said that Muslims should be alert for the census and complain in case the process of census is not completed in their areas.
“It happened with Muslims in the past that their whole mohallah was left out of the process of census, and at times wrong information or incorrect spelling of Muslims’ name was registered. So, Muslims should get all the information filled correctly especially the number of members and name of religion as well as mother language”
Besides it is the duty of the literate lot among the community to see to it that correct information pertaining to the illitaerate brethren is recorded by Government officials. One must understand that even if a person answers the questions of the officials on duty properly, the possibility of errors being committed while noting down the details cannot be ruled out. Even a minor error such as a spelling mistake, can land the illiterate brother/sister of ours in great trouble in the future.
We request NGOs to offer their services for providing guidance to the community regarding the ongoing census. There are, by the grace of the Almighty, many a Jama’ths and associations in most regions of ours who strive for the betterment of the society and work for our less fortunate brothers and sisters. We appeal to all such organizations belonging to all communities to take up this issue seriously and help create awareness among the masses.
