Hidayah Foundation, a Mangalore based philanthropic organization, which came into existence with the aim of empowering women and development of children in all aspects, has been striving in the fields of education and health for over two years.
Firmly believing in the principle that the development of Muslim Community should begin at the grass root level, Hidayah Foundation gives utmost priority for the education of poor Muslim families. But at the same time Hidayah Foundation has identified the obstacles to acquire education such as poverty, hunger, homelessness, diseases, social evils. Khasim Ahmed H.K., Chairman of Hidayah Foundation rightly points out that we have to focus on these issues in parallel with education, otherwise our efforts will get diluted.
Recognizing the need of the hour, Hidayah Foundation intensified its struggle to extend basic and primary needs and facilities to the poor Muslim families, to promote economic self dependence and to eradicate social menaces.
Providing scholarship, books and other education related materials for poor Muslim children, especially in rural areas of the Dakshina Kannada district, organising career guidance, informative training camps are parts of Hidayah’s programmes. Hidayah Foundation is striving towards creating an atmosphere for the Muslim students of the region to learn Arabic language along with contemporary education.
Hidayah foundation firmly believes in understanding the ground realities before proceeding for strategy planning, which reduces lot of dilution and duplication of efforts.
In recent days, Hidayah extended its work sphere by commencing a comprehensive survey on regional Muslim community. The ongoing survey focuses on the educational level of Muslim community in general and women in particular, views of students about purpose of education, changing trend of jobs and occupations of the community members, status of Muslim mothers, the educational quality of all the educational institutions of the district and other issues.
Gaining over two years of experience in the field of social service, and with the realities found through ground level surveys, Hidayah Foundation has come up with a framework for the future mission of the community.
1) There is a need of guidance for the Muslim community, which is moving towards development.
2) Although the Muslim community has cultivated strength to face the challenges of the age of information technology, there is a lack of farsighted, comprehensive and collective planning, a commitment to implement such plans and mutual relationship between Muslim educational institutions.
4) Enhancement of teaching & learning methodologies.
5) Level of participation of the parents is extremely low in the affairs of the education of their children.
6) lack of moral and ethical values amongst students due to lack of Islamic knowledge
7) There is a need to maintain balance between religious and contemporary education.
8) Educational and career guidance programs should be organised for Muslims students as per the need of time.
9) There is need to develop a link & common strategy involving all institutions, organisations and activists of the Community to educate the students and parents regarding government schemes & creating a format for scholarship distribution.
In order to discuss and share the above points with local institutions, organizations, Muslim educationalists, scholars, experts, teachers, parents and students to create a roadmap with some remedies, Hidayah Foundation is going to organise a two day Coastal Muslims’ Educational conference on August 7 and 8.
