Freedom fighter, ‘Malnad Gandhi’ HG Govinde Gowda no more

Hassan, Jan 6: Freedom fighter, former Minister and well-known Gandhian HG Govinde Gowda breathed his last at his residence near Koppa in Chikkamagaluru district on Wednesday. He was 90.

malnadigandhiThe politician with a difference had been suffering from old-age-related health problems for the last few months. For the last one month, he was bed-ridden and was treated at his home ‘Manipura’.

Born on May 25, 1926, he was actively involved in the freedom struggle and got into politics later in Independent India through the town municipal council. He was known as ‘Malnad Gandhi’

He was elected president of Koppa Municipal Council in 1952. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Sringeri constituency for the first time in 1983. He was Minister for State for Primary Education and Adult Education between 1983 and 86.

Later in the Deve Gowda Cabinet, he was Primary and Secondary Education Minister. During his tenure, he was instrumental in introducing a common entrance test to recruit teachers. More than 90,000 teachers were appointed when he was the Minister. He quit politics in 1999, as his term as MLA came to an end.

He is survived by a wife and six children. The final rites would be held at his residence in Koppa on Thursday.

Kozhikode, Jan 26: The Indian national flag was unfurled at around 10,000 mosques and religious institutions across Kerala on the auspicious occasion of 71st Republic Day on Sunday.

"The national flag was unfurled at around 10,000 mosques across the state on this auspicious occasion as per the instruction of the Waqf Board," Secretary of the Kuttiady Juma Masjid Committee, K Basheer, told media here.

He said that the national flag was also unfurled at the Kuttiady Juma Masjid here as per the instructions.

"Constitution is under threat by the Citizenship Amendment Act, we also read the preamble of the Constitution in solidarity," Basheer said.

Meanwhile, a majestic event was held in the national capital on the occasion of Republic Day.

Welcome news.  But i dont think any of sanghi shakhas have hoisted our national flag on this occasion.  I didnt see a single picture in any media or newspaper.

Ramanagara, May 15: Flouting all social distancing norms, people gathered in large numbers for a village temple fair in Karnataka's Ramanagara district.

On Thursday, people in large numbers came out on a road to participate in the fair. Attendees took permission for gathering from Panchayat Development Officer NC Kalmatt.

According to a Tehsildar official, Kalmatt was suspended by Ramanagara Deputy Commissioner for granting permission for the gathering.

People have been advised to wear mask in public space and maintain social distancing to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, 45 more COVID-19 cases have been reported from Karnataka, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 1,032 on Friday, according to the state Health Department.

Bengaluru, Apr 11: Seven more people have tested positive for coronavirus taking the tally to 214 in the state.

"Coronavirus cases rise to 214 in Karnataka, with seven more people testing positive between 5 PM Friday and 12 PM Saturday," said the Karnataka health department.

According to the health department, all these seven people have a history of contact with COVID-19 patients. Five of them are workers of a pharmaceutical company in Mysuru.

"Out of the total cases in the state, six people have died while 37 others were cured or discharged," added the state health department.
