Mangaluru, Jan 6: Social activist Vidya Dinker, who spearheaded many struggles in coastal Karnataka, has been chosen for Lawrence Pinto Human Rights Award 2016.

vidyadinkerThe awards selection committee has unanimously selected 'firebrand human rights activist' Vidya Dinker to receive the award, noted Eric Ozario, secretary of the organization in an official statement on Wednesday.

The organization has considered Vidya's selfless fight for people's rights for the past many years, for taking on the might of the state against the displacement of locals, especially the poor in the SEZ project, her fight for ecology and in defense of hapless trees being felled in the name of development and progress, for standing up bravely against 'the terrorism of the saffron brigade', and doing all this, almost single handedly, in selecting her for the award, Eric said.

Lawrence Pinto, in whose name the award is instituted, lived all his life in the service of the working class and the downtrodden, and 'Friends of Lawry' instituted the award to perpetuate his memory.

Vidya will receive the award at a function to be held at Kalaangann, Shaktinagar here on January 24 and M I Savadatti, former vice-chancellor, Mangalore University will present the award.

The award announcement comes a few days after she was threatened with rape and murder by dozens of online abusers after she took on saffron fringe groups that tried to prevent screening of Shah Rukh Khan starrer Dilwale in Mangaluru.

Mangaluru-based rationalist Narendra Nayak, who travels across the country and abroad exposing 'miracles' and bringing awareness of the need to develop a scientific temper, was the first recipient of the award last year.

This woman reinvented herself by making cheap allegations against nationalist groups who protested against anti-national actor Shah Rukh Khan's film.

Kasaragod, Mar 23: The district administration on Monday decided to abandon efforts to map out the movement details of the NRI who came from Dubai recently and came into contact with many in North Kerala.

The district has been completely locked down since Monday morning, on the directive of the Central Government. Prohibitory orders have been slapped in the district since Sunday night to restrict socialisation of the people.

As the person now in isolation have allegedly been non-cooperative, the authorities were finding it difficult to sketch out a rote map as his movement and socialisation has been so vast and wide since his arrival here on March 12.

The middle aged and popular NRI who landed at Karipur airpprt on March 11 had been in Calicut till midnight prior to boarding the Maveli Express to make it to his hometown Kasaragod, which is 160 kms away from Calicut. Bengaluru, Jul 31: Gyms in Bengaluru carried out sanitation work on Thursday following the Centre's nod to reopen gyms from August 5, after several weeks of COVID-induced lockdowns.

"We are taking all the precautionary measures prescribed by the government and will follow the guidelines very strictly. A thermal scanner, oximeter and hand sanitizers have been placed at the entrance of the gym.

We request all other gym owners also to follow the guidelines strictly to keep their members safe and healthy," said Prasad Kumar, a gym owner in Bangalore.

He added, "The last few months have been very difficult for us gym owners and fitness instructors. We are very grateful to the government for allowing us to re-open.

We are going to be very cautious when we open. Even before this COVID-19 pandemic, we used to sanitise all the equipment before and after every use so hopefully, this won't be too difficult for us. We are getting rid of the air conditioners to allow cross ventilation and open the space a little more."

According to Chandu Gowda, an actor and frequenter of the gym, working out at home was not the same as working out in the gym with the proper equipment.

"I'm very glad that I get to come back and work out as I used to before this lockdown. For an actor, working out is extremely important, not just for my physical health but also mental health.

Doing exercises at home is never as good as exercising in a space dedicated to one purpose. I hope other members of the gym follow the rules and regulations religiously," Gowda said.
