Mangaluru/Udupi, Jan 12: Even though the Congress party in the twin districts of coastal Karnataka has managed to overcome rebellion in recently held Legislative council polls, it may face fresh troubles in the looming Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat polls in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

congThe massive dissidence in the Congress was evident the last month with some leaders of in the district openly backing the independent candidate K Jayaprakash Hegde, who was expelled for contesting against the official candidate.

Another Congress leader Harikrishna Bantwal, known as the right-hand of party veteran B Janardhana Poojary, has continued his tirade against Oscar Fernandes, Veerappa Moily and Vinay Kumar Sorake, after the poll defeat.

In Udupi, as many as two Congress leaders have been expelled for anti-party activity, and three others have been suspended, while the District Congress Committee (UDCC) has recommended the expulsion of former Zilla Panchayat President B. Bhujanga Shetty to the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Party.

According to sources in the Congress, the fact that the dissidence in Congress had come out so openly was bound to affect the chances of the Congress in forthcoming elections, at least in some pockets of the twin districts.

But this would also depend on the fact on whether supporters of Mr Mr Hegde and M. Bantwal contest the polls or tacitly back someone in it.

“The people will react to the high-handed manner in which some Congress leaders have behaved in the run-up to the Council polls during the ZP polls,” said Rajesh Shetty Birti, a supporter of Mr. Hegde.

Cong vs BJP

The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), which is closely observing the developments in the coastal region, has issued a direction that a district-level election committee be constituted for selecting candidates for the polls. It would be headed by the district in-charge Minister.

Those general aspirants who would like to contest in the zilla panchayat elections would have to pay the party Rs 10,000 and those seeking ticket for the taluk panchayat polls would have to pay Rs 5,000 while filing their applications.

The committee would scrutinise the applications and decide who should contest based on reservations announced, said a senior Congress leader.

Previously, there were 35 constituencies in Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, which have increased to 36 constituencies after the fresh delimitation process. Similarly, out of the existing 25 constituencies in Udupi zilla panchayat, one was removed and two new constituencies were included, making a total of 26 constituencies.

In the outgoing house in DK, the BJP has 24 seats and the Congress 11 seats. In Udupi, the BJP has 16 seats and the Congress nine.

Dubai, Jul 8: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has revoked landing permits issued to UAE-based private jets flying Indian expats who are willing to fly back to UAE. With this the operation of private jets from India to the UAE has stopped.

The development comes days after DGCA stopped UAE airlines from chartering repatriation flights to India.

The DGCA’s decision has come as a huge disappointment for desperate expats who are trying every means possible to return to the UAE, and were shelling out up to Dh15,000 per ticket.

All charter flights were operating with the appropriate permissions and clearances for the specific mission, route and destination, said the charterers.

DC Aviation Al-Futtaim, the only integrated VIP handling and hangar facility in DWC, said in an official statement: "As a result of the DGCA suspension of flights into India, our Challenger 604 aircraft which was scheduled to land in Dubai today has been affected."

Afi Ahmed, managing director of Smart Travels, said he has received news from official sources that all approvals for operation of private jets have been barred until July 10.

"Even the flights that had been given approvals stand cancelled. Some flights organised on July 9 have also been grounded," said Ahmed, who was also stranded in Kochi, Kerala, till July 4 but returned home in the UAE on-board Global 6,000, the largest business jet, organised by a Dubai-based aviation company.

Ganesh Rayapudi, a UAE-based businessman who has been trying to organise flights from India to UAE, said: "The government has kept on hold all charters. At least 52 passengers were desperately waiting to come back from Hyderabad on these flights and were willing to collectively cough up Dh400,000."

He added: "I agree that it is unfair to those who cannot afford these prices. However, UAE residents have commitments here; they were tired of waiting and willing to go any lengths, including taking the expensive route."

On July 3, India's DGCA announced via an official circular that scheduled international flights will remain suspended till month-end and only those on a case-to-case basis will be allowed to operate. These flights were suspended on March 22 due to the ongoing pandemic.

Udupi, Jan 16: Admar Mutt Junior seer Eshapriya Theertha Swami is all set to take over the reins of Krishna Mutt during the 250th Paryayotsava, scheduled to be held on January 17 and 18.

The uniqueness lies in the fact that the Admar Mutt, one of the Ashta Mutts of Krishna Mutt in this Temple town Udupi, ushers in the new Paryaya cycle (32nd). The Paryaya of outgoing seer Vidyadheesha Theertha Swami of Palimaru Mutt, Admar’s dwandwa (associate) mutt, marks the end of the cycle of eight mutts.

Under the system initiated by the Madhwa philosopher and saint Madwacharya, the seers of Ashta mutts would take turns to worship Lord Krishna every two months. Seer Vadiraja (1481-1601) ended the system and introduced the system of f running the temple administration once in two years.

Chamrajnagar, May 30: Karnataka Cabinet Minister Ramesh Jarakiholi said on Friday that over22 Congress MLAs were in touch with him and he can bring five of them.

"More than 22 Congress MLAs are in contact with me and if the high commands wants, I can bring five of them tomorrow," Jarakiholi told reporters.

Replying on speculation that some MLAs in BJP are not happy and want to join the Congress, he said, "Congress is a sinking boat and nobody wants to go to Congress now."

Meanwhile, sources in BJP have said that some party leaders are not happy including Basangouda Ramangouda Patil Yatnal.

Basvanagowda Patil said earlier this week that "BS Yediyurappa is not his CM, he is the CM of Karnataka. My leaders are Narendra Modi and JP Nadda."

The sources also said that other close aides of Yeddyurappa like Umesh Katti and Murugesh Nirani are no longer happy with him as they are yet to be included in the state cabinet.

The sources said Nirani has stood with Yeddyurappa but has not been included in the cabinet. There is speculation that several MLAs are in touch with Nirani.

Sources said Nirani, Umesh Katti, Basvanagowda Patil and several other leaders held a meeting in an undisclosed location.

Congress leader DK Suresh said the Congress has no role in the developments in BJP. "Yeddyurappa government will be brought down by their own MLAs. Congress has no role in it," he said.
