coupleBangalore, Mar 12: A senior scientist working with a petro-chemical major in the City was arrested on Monday for killing his wife.

A schoolteacher at Elements Montessori on Aralur Road, Mahalakshmi, 37, a native of Mumbai, died after Dharmesh, 38, slapped her during an argument over a trivial matter,  in their flat at Mantri Flora Apartments, in Iblur Junction, HSR Layout, on Sunday night.

Mahalakshmi married Dharmesh, a native of Jharsuguda in Orissa, in 2005, in Mumbai, while he was pursuing his doctoral studies. The couple, with a four-year-old boy Vedant, had worked in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and settled in Bangalore two years ago when Dharmesh was posted as a senior scientist at Shell Global Solutions.

Police said on Sunday, when the couple were watching TV at about 10 pm, Dharmesh got a call from his elder sister that she would be visiting them on Monday, to which Mahalakshmi objected, leading to an argument.

A furious Dharmesh slapped Mahalakshmi who collapsed on the sofa. A panic-stricken Dharmesh tried to revive her, including mouth-to-mouth respiration. When she did not respond, he rushed her to a private hospital and from there to St John's Hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

Being informed by St John's Hospital authorities, HSR Layout Police arrested Dharmesh and registered a murder case under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code.

Police said Mahalakshmi's parents have in their statement said that there were no issues between the couple and supported Dharmesh, their son-in-law, terming the incident an accident. They also stated there was no dowry harassment.

A friend of Dharmesh, who described him as calm, and surprised that he so flared up to slap his wife, said Dharmesh was working as an exploratory researcher.

Murder case solved

The City police have cracked a recent murder case and arrested one person. Auto driver Anwar Pasha, 44, was found bludgeoned to death in a shed in A Narayanapura on February 18. Mahadevapura Police had registered a murder case and a special team was formed to investigate.

Mahadevapura Police recently arrested Subramani alias Mani, 21, from Chikkadasapura. Subramani hails from Chikkur village, Mulbagal.

Investigations revealed that Anwar Pasha had borrowed Rs 5,500 from Subramani and had not repayed the debt. The two met at Manjunatha Bar next to the shed, where they consumed liquor.

Following an argument over repayment of debt, Subramani bludgeoned Anwar to death with a boulder.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Leaving spectators awestruck, Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda ran 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds at traditional buffalo race Kambala, following which people started comparing him to former Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt.

Gowda, who is from Mudbidri town, accomplished the feat during a Kambala race in a paddy field in Kadri on February 1.

"People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field," said Srinivasa Gowda.

People took to social media and drew a parallel between him and Bolt. Twitterati hailed Gowda and his accomplishment on the muddy grounds.

Kambala is an annual buffalo race held in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

"I'll call Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI Coaches. There's lack of knowledge in masses about the standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I'll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested," Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Saturday.

Bengaluru, Mar 4: CM BS Yediyurappa may reconsider plans to hike taxes and curtail populist schemes in his budget on Thursday as the Centre released part of GST compensation it owes the state. Officials said the Centre released the first instalment of the bimonthly compensation for October-November amounting to Rs 2,013 crore.

"This is welcome relief as the government has been scrambling to mobilise funds," said BT Manohar, member of GST consultative committee, government of Karnataka. The second instalment of Rs 1,523 crore is also expected to be released soon.

The CM, in his seventh budget, is expected keep the focus firmly on farmers and give top priority to irrigation, agriculture and welfare schemes.

The irrigation sector is expected to land the lion's share with an allocation of at least Rs 25,000 crore, followed by agriculture. Former CM Kumaraswamy had allocated over Rs 17,000 crore for water resources.

The bulk of funds is likely to go to the Upper Krishna (UKP) and Upper Bhadra projects, as it will help backward Kalyana Karnataka and central Karnataka regions. The two are also significant political blocs. The government will also seek assistance from the Centre for the UKP project in the erstwhile Hyderabad-Karnataka region, which enjoys special status under the Constitution owing to its backwardness. Yediyurappa is also expected to spell out populist schemes for the poor.

Former CM HD Kumaraswamy had allocated Rs 17,212 crore in the previous budget for water resources and Yediyurappa is likely to go well beyond that figure. "Priority will be given to irrigation and farmers," Yediyurappa had said recently. "I am making efforts to present a budget within the financial constraints."

he amounts are released once every two months, but the Centre had fallen behind on payments. PX

"There are indications that another payment will be made."

The state's optimism stems from the fact that the Centre's GST collection crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore-mark for four successive months till February.

However, the CM could still hike tax rates marginally. At a pre-budget meet on resource mobilisation where Yediyurappa is learnt to have expressed willingness to borrow funds, officials from the finance department advocated raising tax rates instead.
