Water

Mangalore, February 11: Residents of Ganeshnagar colony in Ganjimath, who comprise Dalits and Kudubis, have alleged that they do not have drinking water supply for the last four months.

Over 50 families, mostly from the Kudubi community, complain that their drinking water supply, which was sourced from a bore well dug up in their area, has become defunct. Ganeshnagar colony is located in Badagulipady village in Ganjimath gram panchayat limits, around 20km from Mangalore. “During the gram panchayat elections, candidates sought votes. But it is nearly five months, and they have not solved the problem despite our repeated pleas. We (women) have to walk so much to find good drinking water, that too, after returning from a day's work,” said an angry 50-year-old Seethu.

She and several other women in the colony are daily wage labourers. Several of the women complained that they had to wait for several hours for water from a bore well just outside their colony. But they had to push the handle of the hand pump for several minutes before there was any sign of water, they said. For some time, one of the residents of the colony allowed the others to use water from the well of their house. But for the last few days, even that has gone dry, they said. Gopal Gowda said “The prices of vegetables have risen so much. We can not afford to wait here for drinking water all day without going for work. Some of us are old, most families have children. We wake up in the morning and there is no water for us to drink.”

Seeta, who is an agricultural labourer, said things would have been easier for her if she had daughters. Her three sons went for work in the morning and only returned in the evening, while she went for work as well as arranged for water.

Gram panchayat member G.M. Imtiyaz said in the last four months the panchayat had dug up four wells but none of them had any water. He said that the problem had risen because a bore well had been dug up in the neighbouring of Badaga Yedapadavu, and that the panchayat was working to address the issue of water supply for the colony.

Bengaluru, Jan 12: Protesters plan to intensify their anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act movement from sit-down satyagrahas and rallies to street and door-to-door campaigns in different parts of the city.

The street campaigns began on January 1 with 20-30 volunteers of Hum Bharat Ke Log, reaching out to people in Koramangala and Whitefield and explaining the CAA, National Population Register (NPR), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and related issues. They have organised four campaigns.

According to Zia Nomani, member of Hum Bharat Ke Log, the campaign will intensify soon. “Over 200-400 volunteers will organise nukkad sabhas and other activities around JP Nagar and Banashankari,” Nomani said.

She added that though protests began as a medium for people to vent their concerns, more needs to be done.

“We have realised that many people have begun working on their personal documents and want to help them understand what CAA is all about,” Nomani said.

Volunteers will talk to people at street junctions, discuss issues and run signature campaigns. They say: “Our movement is focussed on reaching out to people. Pro-CAA workers too started a door-to-door campaign last week.”

Avani Chokshi, an advocate who participated in a campaign, said though people had a cursory idea about these issues, they didn’t know the details. “It through such campaigns that we can reach more people. It’s important to talk to people who haven’t made up their mind about the issues or are even pro-CAA,” said Avani, adding, “It hard to combat hatred in a short span of time. The movement needs to be sustained.”

Activist Geeta Menon, who has been at the forefront of the street campaign, says they were heckled at some places.

Bengaluru, Feb 10: A group of women on Monday started a protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR) here near Bilal Masjid.

Members of the transgender community on Sunday had also taken out a march here to express solidarity with those protesting against CAA, NRC, and NPR.

The newly enacted law is facing stiff opposition across the country with some states including Kerala, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Punjab refusing to implement it. Rajasthan, Kerala, and Punjab have also passed resolutions against the amended citizenship law in their legislative Assemblies.

The CAA grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Bengaluru, May 5: The Karnataka government is planning to maintain a Health database of its citizens in the backdrop of experience gained from the COVID-19 pandemic, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said on Tuesday.

In a statement issued here, he said a “Health Register” will be maintained to keep track of all health issues of the people and the project will be implemented first in Chikkaballapur district on an experimental basis.

“COVID-19 has provided enough experience for all of us and therefore, there is a need to maintain health data of each person. The government will be undertaking a survey using a team of Primary Health Centre officials, Revenue officials, Education department staff and Asha Workers,” the Minister said in a release here.
