Davanagere, Belagavi among first 20 smart cities; Mangaluru disappointed

Mangaluru, Jan 28: Karnataka’s coastal city of Mangaluru has failed to make it into the list of first 20 smart cities among 97 cities of India chosen for the ambitious project.

smart cityUrban development minister Venkaiah Naidu announced the list of the first 20 cities to be developed as Smart Cities on Thursday. The list included two cities from Karnataka: Davanagere and Belagavi.

“They had sent us a list of 97 cities. There was a competition among these names and 20 cities have been selected,” Naidu told a news conference.

These cities would be developed to have assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation.

Davanagere, Jun 2: A special pooja was performed by Honnali BJP MLA and Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa's political secretary MP Renukacharya at Hirekalmatha, in Honnali against COVID-19.

A Nava Graha pooja was also performed for the betterment of those infected. Those present at the pooja maintained social distancing norms and covered their faces with masks.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 1,90,535 including 93,322 active cases. While 91,819 people have either been cured, discharged or migrated, 5,394 deaths have been reported.

Mangaluru, Jan 17: A poultry truck transporting chickens overturned on Friday at Perne village near Uppinangady on Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway, killing 200 of them.

Police said that the truck was headed towards Mangaluru from Uppinangady when the truck driver lost control of the vehicle causing it to topple. As many as 200 chickens were killed in the mishap.

Another vehicle was later used to transport the remaining chickens.

Mangaluru, June 29: An elderly man, who was under quarantine at a lodge was inhumanly dragged on the floor and abandoned on the roadside by his own son. 

The shocking incident occurred in broad daylight at Deralakatte on the outskirts of the city today. 

The father and son are said to be natives of Uppala in Kasaragod district. The duo stayed in a hotel room at Deralakatte after returning from Mumbai a few days ago. 

Today the son dragged his father mercilessly on the floor and escaped after abandoning him on the road side. A CCTV camera has captured the incident. 

The jurisdictional Konaje police are trying trace the miscreant.
