Srinivas students come up with their own 'Coconut Dehusking Machine'

Mangalore, June 28: A group of students from Department of Mechanical Engineering, Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil, have come up with a novel 'Coconut Dehusking Machine'.

The machine peels of coconut husk through a mechanically controlled device. It can dehusk 120 coconuts in an hour.

Final year B.E Mechanical Engineering students Ashwin M Kamath, Rahul R Kamath, Santhosh P Saldanha and V Sudhir Rao are the ones behind this project. They were guided by Prof. Ramesh Kumar K R.

Students who made this machine are of the opinion that the device can be of great use in coastal areas where coconut production is more besides being useful in coconut oil extraction industries, temples etc.

Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology rendered financial assistance for the project. Dr. Dilip Kumar K, Head of the Department, and Dr. Srinivasa Mayya D, Principal, administered the project.

Bengaluru, Aug 6: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday asked the state chief secretary to take necessary steps in view of the rising rainfall in the state and gave instructions for releasing Rs 50 crore for emergencies.

"CM BS Yediyurappa has instructed Chief Secretary to take appropriate precautions in view of the rise in rainfall activity across the state. CM advised Chief Secretary to keep in touch with district officials and instructed to release Rs 50 crores for emergencies," an official release said.

India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in a number of districts in the state.

CS Patil, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Bengaluru said that red alert has been announced in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Chickamagalur, Shivamogga, Kodagu and Hassan due to heavy rainfall in the region from last two-three days.

Bengaluru, May 26: Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa has been urged to cancel the proposed SSLC examinations in Karnataka and allow “mass-pass” for every student in the wake of covid-19 crisis. A group of intellectuals and educationists have put forth this demand.

In the letter released by educationist VP Niranjan Aradhya, said that they were listing the scientific reasons to the CM for cancellation of exams which are slated to be held from June 25 to July 4th.

In the letter, the intellectuals have elucidated a number of reasons for cancelling the upcoming exams. “There are close to 8.5 lakh students and 2.5 lakh staff involved. If we include parents who would drop their kids at the exam centre, around 30 lakh people will be involved in the process, making it a risky affair. Though the government has said that it will separate the students with fever or other ailments, will students admit to having fever? What if they consume paracetamol and come to write exams?” asks the letter. 

Added to this, the question papers have to be sent from the district and taluk centres and there may be chances of transmission.

“Even if we conduct exams, then what about the students who have failed? Every year, around 2.5 lakh students fail in the exam. Will the government conduct the supplementary exams again? The whole process of conducting exams comes at a huge cost of Rs 20 cr to Rs 25 crore. Hence, we are suggesting that the government cancels the exams and pass the entire group of student en masse,” said the letter.

Chamarajanagar, Feb 7: Health authorities in Karnataka have constituted a mobile team of doctors to monitor villages sharing a border with Kerala districts.

Strong vigil is being maintained by the health authorities in Karnataka after three confirmed cases of Coronavirus was detected in Kerala.

Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja on Wednesday had informed that three positive cases of Coronavirus were found in the state and other suspects were being monitored in isolation.

The virus originated in Wuhan in December and has since then spread to various parts around the world.

China has imposed quarantine and travel restrictions, affecting the movement of 56 million people in more than a dozen cities, amid fears that the transmission rate will accelerate.
