Telecom fraud: 3 more Mangaluru expats likely to walk free from Saudi jail soon

Jeddah, Jan 31: At least three of the four hapless Indian expatriates from Mangaluru, who have been languishing in Saudi jail after being trapped in an illegal call routing (Hundi) case, are likely to be released within a month.

jailAfter paying negotiated fine amount to Saudi Telecom company, judge Saad Al Garni who is chairing the probe into the case has reportedly ordered the release of three prisoners. If everything goes as expected, Riyaz Bajpe, Fairooz Ullal and Nasir Bundar will walk free soon as the formalities for their release is underway.

As per the complaint registered by Saudi Telecom Company in March 2003, as many as eight expatriate workers, all of them from Mangaluru and surrounding areas, had been implicated for allegedly passing and routing of illegal telephone calls and were sentenced to eight years of imprisonment by a Saudi Court. The accused were also asked by the Court to pay a fine of 6.7 million Saudi Riyals to the company.

However, even after serving more than a decade in jail most of them could not walk free from Jeddah jail as they were not able to pay the fine.

According to their family members these unfortunate expats have been made scapegoats for others’ wrongdoings while they were unable to communicate in Arabic or English language. Apparently they were quite new to the Kingdom and they were exploited of their ignorance and were trapped as they are unaware of the situation in the gulf country.

A few philanthropic Indian businessmen in Saudi Arabia had paid a huge amount of money as fine through Indian consulate for the cause the release of these prisoners. NRI organisations such as India Fraternity Forum had also had taken up the issue with Indian Consulate in Jeddah several times.

Which means that the virus is spreading to individuals who haven’t any journey historical past to Covid-19 affected international locations or contact with a COVID-19 optimistic individual with such a historical past.
Consequently, authorities in Karnataka expect a surge in optimistic instances within the coming days. This surge is probably going to come from pockets throughout the state which have a lot of coronavirus suspects, primarily individuals who have returned from Covid-19 affected international locations.

Within the parlance of the corona epidemic fighters, these pockets are referred to as clusters. Bengaluru is one massive cluster with many suspects, a lot of whom are IT professionals who lately returned from Europe, USA and Australia, and many others. The coastal belt is one other cluster, with suspects who’ve lately travelled to Center East. There are different clusters in Karnataka, the place suspects are those that returned after a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Medical schooling minister Ok Sudhakar admitted that the speed of enhance of COVID-19 positives in Karnataka is alarming. For over a month, the state had restricted the variety of optimistic instances to single digits. “Our goal just isn’t to get right into a scenario like Italy, the place the federal government has been lowered to expressing helplessness. In subsequent 20 days, now we have to keep away from moving into such a scenario. I visited Chinnaswamy and Kanteerava stadiums and we’re working out if the stadiums will be transformed into quarantine centres, if warranted,” Dr Sudhakar stated.

The state police are struggling to implement the lockdown due to non-cooperation from some folks. They plan to rope in celebrities to ship throughout the message on social distancing.

Whereas some with home-quarantine seals are discovered roaming within the streets, some nonetheless assume the lockdown is a vacation.

Bengaluru, Feb 16: Deputy chief minister Laxman Savadi’s election to the lone vacant council seat, for which a bypoll has been called, is only a formality as the only other candidate in the contest, independent BR Anil Kumar, dropped out on Saturday.

Kumar conveyed his decision to council secretary and returning officer Vishalakshmi. He decided to withdraw from the February 17 bypoll after failing to get support from Congress and JD(S) legislators.

The bypoll was necessitated after sitting member Rizwan Arshad of Congress resigned as he moved to the legislative assembly as an MLA. Rizwan won the Shivajinagar bypoll in December last year.

“Since the notification on candidates in the fray, after the last date of withdrawal, has already been published, irrespective of any candidate’s retirement, the election has to be conducted,” an official said.

Savadi’s victory was always assured as BJP has 119 members in the House.

Still, Ramanagara BJP district president Rudresh and MP BY Raghavendra reportedly approached Kumar, urging him to withdraw. Kumar, however, denied that he was persuaded by BJP.

“I entered the fray thinking secular parties and likeminded MLAs will support me, but that didn’t happen, so I decided to retire,”he said.

A section of Congress and JD(S) politicians, led by former minister HD Revanna, had persuaded Kumar to enter the contest with the hope that disgruntlement among some BJP legislators over Savadi’s promotion as the deputy CM would result in an upset.

Former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy also offered to support Kumar. Siddaramaiah of Congress refused to do the same. Congress and JD(S) did not field any candidates of their own as they don’t have the requisite numbers in the House.

Savadi must get elected to the council before February 20, otherwise he will lose his cabinet role. According to rules, a person who is not a member of either House should get elected within six months after becoming a minister. Savadi took oath on August 20 last year.

University of Oxford researchers have claimed that a cheap and widely available drug called dexamethasone can help save the lives of patients who are seriously ill with coronavirus.

Scientists working on the Recovery Trial found the drug could help patients on ventilators and oxygen, but had no effect on those who did not need help breathing.

“Based on these results, one death would be prevented by treatment of around eight ventilated patients or around 25 patients requiring oxygen alone,” researchers said in a statement.

Matt Hancock, the health secretary, tweeted: “This global first exemplifies the power of science.”

“I’m absolutely delighted that today we can announce the first successful clinical trial for a treatment for Covid-19,” Mr Hancock said.

Recovery Trial experts said a randomised group of 2,104 patients was given 6mg of dexamethasone per day for 10 days, while another group of 4,321 were given normal treatment.

Dexamethasone reduced deaths by one-fifth in patients on oxygen feeds and by one-third in those who needed a ventilator to breathe, preliminary results showed.

Mr Hancock added: “This is a huge step forward and it’s because we’ve backed the science.”

Martin Landray, professor of medicine and epidemiology at the Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford, and one of the trial’s chief investigators, said in a statement: “These preliminary results from the Recovery Trial are very clear – dexamethasone reduces the risk of death among patients with severe respiratory complications.

“Covid-19 is a global disease – it is fantastic that the first treatment demonstrated to reduce mortality is one that is instantly available and affordable worldwide.”
