Mangaluru welcomes 2016 with gusto

Mangaluru, Jan 1: The coastal city erupted in a blaze of colour and light at midnight as the world ushered in the New Year in style.

Hundreds of people, including men and women, thronged the main roads in the last moments of 2015 to witness the celebrations amidst fireworks. Spirit of the crowd rose as midnight approached and crackers made the sky colourful as the clock struck 12 midnight.

People were seen exchanging New Year greetings by shaking hands and hugging each other.

Hotels and clubs in and around the city had offered special loads of gifts to its customers in an attempt to make their New Year celebrations a memorable one. Prominent hotels offered sumptuous food, live music, dance competition, unlimited food and some colourful events.

The Ocean Pearl, Summer Sands Beach Resort, Pandit Health Resort and Spa, City Beach Resort, Hotel Indrani Amrut Palace, Mukka, Hotel Indrani Palace, Mukka, Lobo's River View, Thirsty Turtle, Mangaluru, Dirt Track 4th Mile, Kuloor ground, Panambur Beach, The DV8 Lounge, Empire Mall are some of the places where grand parities were held.

Those who refrained from expensive New Year parties welcomed the year 2016 in front of Television in their houses.

The police department has just given half-an-hour extension for the people of Mangaluru to welcome 2016 after midnight, in order to avoid untoward incidents in the late night.

The Mangaluru police were out in full strength on New Year's eve to rein in drunk drivers. Alcometers were used to check drunken driving. In some places where alcometers were not there, drivers suspected for drunken driving were be taken for a medical examination, police sources said.

Police teams were formed to curb instances of youth and students misbehaving with women in the guise of wishing them. They have also warned of strict action against persons indulging is drag races, driving vehicles rashly, drinking and driving, creating ruckus, drinking on beaches and conducting dances or programmes which are obscene.

The police had also set up surveillance cameras to ensure law and order amidst the New Year celebrations on the beaches.

Bengaluru, Mar 8: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has identified three more locations to open Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDL) including in Mysuru, Hassan, and Shivamogga in Karnataka.

According to a statement issued here on Sunday, these laboratories will start functioning shortly in Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute, Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, and Shivamogga Institute of Medical Sciences. Besides, the ICMR has also identified sample collection centres in Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Science in Ballari and Kalaburgi Institute of Medical Sciences.

B G Prakash, State Joint Director (Communicable Diseases), said that the new Laboratories will help to ease the load on the two designated laboratories in Bengaluru. Currently, the virology laboratory in Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute and the NIV branch in Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases are doing COVID-19 tests in Karnataka.

Bengaluru, Apr 16: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr Ashwath Narayan today said that if former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, being a law-abiding citizen, does not follow guidelines then action will be taken against him.

The Deputy CM made this comment when he was asked about Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil's marriage, which has been fixed on April 17 at a farmhouse near Bidadi in Ramnagar.

Narayan said: "Any violation of the guidelines will not be tolerated. We will ask the concerned authority to film the entire event and document it."

He said that so far Kumaraswamy has made public statements that guidelines will be followed.

"HD Kumaraswamy is a people's representative. He has been in public life for a long time. He should abide by the guidelines," Narayan said.

"Since he has been in a responsible position for a long time and he was the Chief Minister, guidelines must be followed in his son's marriage as per the rules amid COVID-19 scare.

After the marriage, there must not be any excuses. He cannot say that people came without an invitation," the Deputy Chief Minister added.

Kumaraswamy clarified that only his family members will attend the marriage and that there will be around 60 to 70 people.

"All guidelines will be followed as per the central government directives," he said.

Mangalore, Jan 15: In one of the biggest seizure of gold in the new decade, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths here have seized five kg of gold valued at Rs two Crore from the Air Cargo Complex at International Airport here recently.

Acting on a tip-off the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Bangalore and Mangalore in a co-ordinated effort unraveled a unique modus of smuggling of gold through Air Cargo Complex, at old airport, Bajpe Mangalore two days back, According to release issued here on Tuesday evening.

The smuggled gold was concealed in five metal sprockets which were imported by M/s Swaroop Mineral Pvt Ltd of Udupi in the name of “mining conveyor drive chain”.
