Mumbai, Feb 5:  A local esplanade court in Mumbai acquitted five persons who were arrested soon after serial blasts in Mumbai’s local trains. The police had arrested them for being members of banned organisation SIMI and indulging in unlawful activities, however the police could not prove charges against them.mumbai

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahesh R. Natu held that the crime branch failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt and acquitted Irfan Sayed, Najeeb Bakkali, Firoz Ghaswala, Mohammed Ali Cheepa and Imran Ansari.

Unit 11 of detection crime branch in Mumbai had arrested all these accused after a police officer had received a tip off that Irfan was a member of SIMI and he was indulging in anti-social activities. The police kept a watch for sometime and arrested these five persons.

On the other hand, defence lawyers Ishrat Ali Khan, Tahwar Khan Pathan, Jamal Khan, Styaram Gaud and Aftab Qureshi claimed that the police falsely implicated the accused and allegedly planted articles that were shown to have been seized from the accused.

According to advocate Pathan, the major problem with this case was that police obtained faulty sanction to impose UAPA. The defence pointed out that the articles seized from the accused were not sealed and hence were not acceptable as evidence in the court of law.

After hearing both the sides the court acquitted all the five accused.

Karwar: The number of Covid-19 patients in Uttara Kannada district has gone up to 39 with seven more persons from Bhatkal testing positive for the virus on Sunday.

These seven persons include five men and two women. Among them, the youngest is 15 years and the eldest is 60 years. Rest of the patients are 50, 21, 16, 42, and 31 years old, a health bulletin said. All the new seven cases are contacts of the eight persons who were found positive on Saturday.

Of the new cases, one is an auto-rickshaw driver who had reportedly transported one of the patients. Now the administration is collecting the details of the driver’s journeys and the persons who had travelled in his auto-rickshaw. It is said that some of these persons who were confirmed positive on Sunday had travelled to Udupi and moved around in Bhatkal town to buy medicine.

The pressure on the administration is increasing with new positive cases being detected in Bhatkal town every day. After the first 11 cases, there were no new cases for 20 days. However, since Friday, there is sudden spike in the number of new cases in Bhatkal town.

Kasaragod, June 2: As Kerala commenced fresh academic year with online classes from Monday, a ninth-standard student at Malappuram district in North Kerala ended life allegedly owing to lack of online study facilities like television connection and a smartphone at her house.

Devika, daughter of Balakrishnan, hailing from a Dalit community at Valancherry, about 25 kilometres from Malappuram town, ended her life.

Balakrishnan told the media that he could not recharge the television connection owing to financial crunches. He was working as a daily wage worker and owing to COVID-19 and lockdown, he was not having much work these days.

The family also did not have a smartphone or computer. The family members alleged that Devika was quite upset as she could not attend the virtual class that began on Monday. She was a student of a nearby government school.

Local police said that Devika, who was the eldest among four children of Balakrishnan, was suspected to have self-immolated using kerosene at a premise close to her house on Monday evening. The cause and provocations were still being probed only. No suicide notes were recovered yet.
