Watch row:?BJP plans legal fight against CM

February 22, 2016

Bengaluru, Feb 22: Union Law Minister D V Sadananada Gowda on Sunday said that the BJP would launch a legal fight against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on the issue of his wearing an expensive wrist watch.

sadananda“State BJP president Pralhad Joshi lodging a complaint with the Enforcement Directorate is a step in this direction. The party will ensure that the issue reaches a logical conclusion. The chief minister should have come clean on the issue, but has been trying to hide all the information,” he said.

JD(S) State president H D Kumaraswamy, who raised the issue, should have taken it to the logical end. But it appears that he may not pursue the issue in the wake of the Congress leader disclosing information about expensive cars and watches that he owns, Gowda said.

Bike rally

The Union minister was speaking to reporters after taking part in a bike rally organised at Hebbal to express gratitude to the electorate for voting in favour of the BJP in the recent byelection.

On the Opposition parties accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being silent on the JNU issue, Gowda said it was not appropriate to comment on anything at this juncture as the investigation was going on.

The judiciary has been looking into the issue and it is not proper for the government to comment on it, he said.

Gowda said the State BJP core committee meeting convened by party national president Amit Shah on February 23 in Delhi was likely to discuss the appointment of a new State president and organisation of the party in the State in the coming days.

“No agenda has been set for the meeting. But the appointment of the new president is likely to be discussed,” he added.

Time not ticking for me: Siddu

Chief Minister said Siddaramaiah said on Sunday that it was a figment of one's imagination to think that the controversy surrounding the watch he wears would lead to his ouster from the post, reports DHNS from Chitradurga.

He told reporters in the city that he had no personal grudge against former chief minister Yeddyurappa. Cases against him would be handled as per law, the chief minister said. At the same time, Siddaramaiah said that he need not be afraid of Yeddyurappa.

Udupi, Feb 16: Nine people were killed after a private bus collided with a large roadside boulder in Udupi district in Karnataka on Saturday, the police said. The accident took place on Saturday evening, at around 5.45 pm, on the Mulnur Ghat at Abbas Kattingeri in Mala village, while the bus was on its way to Mangaluru from Sringeri, reported the news channel.

The bus, which was reportedly carrying around 35 passengers, was trying to manoeuvre a turn while travelling on a ghat road when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle hit a massive boulder and the impact caused seven people to die on the spot. Two others passed away while they were on the way to the hospital.

The deceased passengers have been identified as Radha Ravi, Yogendra, Preetham Gowda, Basavaraju, Angana, Sharul and Ranjitha. The cleaner of the bus was also killed in the accident.

According to reports, the passengers in the bus were mostly in their early 20s and were employees of Vital Records Private Limited near JCK Industrial Park. Century Vital Records is a data security company which works in the Hebbal Industrial Mysuru. The group was visiting Udupi, Hornadu and Kudremukh.

While some of the injured persons were rushed to Manipal hospital, others were taken to the Karkala city government hospital, police said.

The police have said that rash and negligent driving by the driver is likely to have caused the accident. A case has been registered at the Karkala Rural Police Station, the police said.

Last month, three persons were killed and four others were injured after a fatal collision between a van and a bus near Bengaluru. Both the vehicles caught fire after the impact, but while passengers of the bus, travelling from Bengaluru to Shivamogga, managed to escape, the three passengers who were trapped in the van could not escape and were charred to death.

Bengaluru, Feb 10: Two Iranian nationals have been arrested by the Karnataka police for allegedly stealing money from car showrooms by diverting cashiers’ attention in Mangaluru, Udupi and Bengaluru.

The arrested are Saeed Rostami, 26 and his friend Saber Hossein Eghbalzadeh, 35, are both residents of Tehran and in India on tourist visa. They were caught by the sleuths of Bengaluru’s RMC Yard police station.

The accused would approach the cashiers, asking for change for Rs 2000 notes to divert their attention and flee with cash from the showroom.

The duo landed in New Delhi on January 16. Later, they arrived in coastal Karnataka before reaching Bengaluru on February 1.

The same day around 4pm, the two visited Trident Automobile Pvt Ltd’s service centre in RMC Yard. They went to cashier Kiran and sought change for Rs 2000. One of them dropped the note and Kiran picked it up for him. Meanwhile, Kiran also noticed there was no change in his cash box and informed the duo accordingly.

“Kiran later realised Rs 44,000 was missing from the cash box. He verified CCTV footage and found the two visitors stole the money when he bent down to pick up the Rs 2000 note,” a police officer said.

Kiran filed a theft and cheating case against the men. RMC Yard police suggested Kiran circulate the footage at other car showrooms and service centres as they had heard about similar incidents being reported from Udupi, Mangaluru and other places in Bengaluru.

“Sharing of CCTV footage helped us nab the suspects. They visited a showroom near Cauvery junction on Ballari Road on February 6. The staff noticed the duo and realised they were the same guys, who had stolen the money at RMC Yard and informed us,” said police.
