Mangaluru, Feb 24: Rasheeda Banu, a lecturer at a private degree college in Ullal, is probably the only member in Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat who holds a master degree in political science. This hijab-clad woman managed to defeat her closest rival Poornima Shetty of BJP with a margin of 4,580 votes in Konaje seat in just concluded panchayat polls.

A rank holder in post-graduation at Mangalore University, Rasheeda worked as a guest lecturer in Field Marshal Cariappa College in Madikeri for two years and then joined Syed Madani Women's College in Ullal.

Eldest daughter of two-time taluk panchayat member Muhammed Mustafa Malar, she is married to Muhammed Twaha, an engineer and they have a small child. Thanks to the support and encouragement from her father, husband and health minister UT Khader she decided to enter politics to serve the poor through Congress party a few weeks ago.

“I want to develop my constituency using the funds available from the government. My father has been supporting me throughout the election,” she says.

“I know there is a lot of difference between what I have learnt and what I will be practicing now,” Ms. Banu said. She intends to work with legislators, and taluk panchayat and gram panchayat members to carry out development works.

“It is through development alone that harmony can be built in my constituency,” she said.

Wife replaces husband

Another Congress candidate Seema Melwyn D'Souza, who won from Neermarga seat, was beautician at a firm in Dubai till last year. She quit her Dubai job to join her husband, Melwyn D'Souza, a former ZP member. She opened her own beauty parlour in Neermarga later.

She said that it was her husband who had contested from the constituency during the last term. “As the women reservation was announced for the constituency, I contested the election. I will work towards the development of the constituency.”

Ruling out that his wife's candidature was a case of family politics, Mr. D'Souza said that it was proposed by party workers. “She is yet to get a grip of things. I am here to support her,” Mr. D'Souza said.

Congratulations! It's good sign youngsters are jumping into politics. I wish them all the success for their future political life. Yes. There are many corrupt politicians in and around us. We should not be one among those who just blame politicians. The young and clean hands should jump into the political field and wipe out the corrupt. this is the best solution at the moment.

Bengaluru, Mar 22: The Karnataka government on Sunday afternoon announced that 9 districts in the State will be under lock down till March 31, barring essential services. It also announced imposition of Section 144 across the state for 3 hours - between 9 p.m. (when the "Janata curfew" will end) to 12 midnight.

The nine COVID-19-affected districts are Bengaluru, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada (Mangaluru), Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburgi and Chikkablapur.

Announcing these measures after attending a meeting chaired by Chief Minister B. S Yeddyurappa, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that there will be no commercial activity in these districts till March 31.

Inter-district movement, including public transport will be restricted. "Public transport will not work across the state tomorrow too. Air conditioned buses will be stopped till March 31," he added. He also clarified that while public transport, including KSRTC, BMTC and Namma Metro, will be withdrawn, private transport services such as cabs and autos will continue to ply.

According to Mr. Bommai, the State government will put in place further measures next week depending on how the situation will unfold in the State and the neighbouring States.

"Government offices will be operational in the State, including in the nine COVID 19-affected districts. As per the current schedule, the legislature sessions will also continue. Pourakarmikas will be working at 50% strength," he added.

New Delhi, Jul 3: The aviation regulator DGCA said on Friday it was extending the suspension of scheduled international passenger flights in the country till July 31 but added that some international scheduled services on selected routes may be permitted on a case to case basis.

Scheduled international passenger flights were suspended in India on March 23 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Modifying its June 26 circular that stated that scheduled international passenger flights will remain suspended till July 15, 2020, the regulator stated on Friday it has decided to extend the deadline to July 31, 2020.

However, international scheduled flights may be allowed on selected routes by the competent authority on a case to case basis,” said the circular by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Air India and other private domestic airlines have been operating unscheduled international repatriation flights under the Vande Bharat Mission, which was started on May 6 by the Central government.

India resumed scheduled domestic passenger flights on May 25, after a gap of two months.
