PFI stages protest in Udupi against Uttara Kannada MP's anti-Islam remarks

Udupi, Mar 8: Protesting against the provocative remarks of Uttara Kannada MP and BJP leader Anant Kumar Hegde against Islam, the members of the Popular Front of India (PFI) staged a demonstration in front of the Clock Tower here on Monday.

Riyaz Farangipete, member of the State committee of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), said that Mr. Hegde's statement that terrorism could not be eliminated till Islam was existent, showed his anti-Muslim thinking. This statement was also against the spirit of the Constitution. Hence, legal action should be initiated against him, he said.

In order to protect the unity and integrity of the country, it was necessary to treat all religions and castes as equal. Elected representatives were expected to uphold the unity and integrity of the country and values of the Constitution. It was an ominous sign if they started giving such divisive statements were made.

Petrol, diesel prices go up in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Apr 1: The price of petrol and diesel will go up by Rs 1.60 and Rs 1.59 per litre, respectively, from Wednesday. This is in line with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa’s decision to hike the rate of tax on petrol from 32% to 35% and diesel from 21% to 24%.

He had announced this in his March 5 Budget for 2020-21 fiscal. At present, a litre of petrol costs Rs 71.97 and diesel Rs 64.41 in Bengaluru.

The government decided to roll out the hike from Tuesday midnight going into Wednesday, April 1, after briefly considering a postponement in view of the COVID-19 crisis.

Finance Secretary (Budget & Resources) Ekroop Caur confirmed to DH that the hike will be rolled out.

The 3% hike on fuel tax was a key resource mobilisation measure that Yediyurappa announced in his Budget. The hike is expected to fetch the government Rs 1,500 crore.

Yediyurappa had also announced a 6% additional excise duty on Indian Made Liquor (IML), which could help the government mop up Rs 1,200 crore. However, the sale of liquor has been prohibited during the lockdown period. Plus, hiking fuel prices during the lockdown will not hit citizens very hard.

5 more COVID-19 cases in Karnataka; total 606 including 282 recovered

Bengaluru, May 3: Five more COVID-19 cases have been reported from Karnataka, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 606, the state government said on Sunday.

The total number of cases includes, 25 deaths and 282 discharged.

"Five new COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Karnataka from 2nd May, 5 pm to 3rd May, 12 noon; taking the total number of positive cases to 606 which includes 25 deaths and 282 discharges," the government stated.

According to the statement, out of the five cases, three have been reported from Kalaburagi and two have been identified from Mudhol.

Karnataka Minister CT Ravi tests positive for COVID-19

Bengaluru, Jul 13: Karnataka Minister CT Ravi has tested positive for COVID-19. However, his wife and staff members have tested negative.

"Yesterday, I along with my wife Pallavi and my staff members underwent COVID-19 test. Fortunately, my wife Pallavi and all my staff members are tested negative. Third umpire's result for me has confirmed that I'm COVID Positive. However, I'm feeling absolutely fine," Ravi tweeted.

"For now, I'll continue to work from here and undergo treatment. Very soon, I'll get cured and come back to work with you all," he added.
So far, Karnataka has reported 36,216 COVID-19 cases, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
