The post of the president of the CMC was reserved for woman (general category), while the post of vice-president was reserved for a woman belonging to the Scheduled Caste.

As Congress has the majority (22 seats) in the 35 member Council, the victory of its candidate was almost confirm. BJP has only 13 seats.

However, finalisation of the candidate was a tough task for the party as there were nine women councillors in the Congress party aspiring for the president's post in the beginning. BJP also had four women councillors.

The three major contenders in the Congress were Meenkshi Madhav Bannanje, Amrita Krishnamurthy and Shobha Poojary. However, ahead of internal voting, Amritha withdraw the nomination and Meenakshi easily defeated Shobha.

As the post of the vice-president is reserved for a woman of the Schedule Caste, there was only one Councillor in the entire council — Sandhya Kumari of the Congress— who was eligible. She represents the Vadabhandeshwara ward. This helped the Congress to finalise its vice-president candidate.

In her speech, Mseenakshi said she will give priority to drinking water supply in the city. She will concentrate on the completion of the pending works. More details are awaited.

Mangaluru, June 14: Private schools under the aegis of Association of English Medium Schools in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi urged the State government to reimburse the arrears of the fee related to admission of students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

Speaking to newsmen here on Sunday association president Y. Mohammed Beary said the State government has not cleared the arrears for the last two years. “The 400 private schools in two districts have to get around Rs 2 crore,” he said and added that the overall arrears that the government has to pay to schools in the State are around Rs1,200 crore.

Mr. Beary said arrears have made the school managements like his, who collect annual fees of about Rs 20,000 from a student, hard to function. Due to lockdown from March the schools could not conduct annual examinations and hence they could not collect pending fees from parents.

New Delhi, Jan 17: The Supreme Court on Friday closed the monitoring of the killing of rationalist M M Kalburgi in 2015 in Dharwad.

A bench of Justices R F Nariman and S Ravindra Bhat noted that the charge sheet has already been filed and the matter was assigned to the sessions court. The court, however, noted two accused had absconded and could not be arrested till date, according to reports.

Senior advocate Devadatt Kamat, appearing for the Karnataka government, submitted that the High Court had also stopped monitoring of the matter.

The top court had in early last year directed that the Karnataka High Court's Dharwad bench to monitor the probe. The Karnataka police SIT, which investigated Gauri Lankesh case and filed the charge sheet, was allowed to take over the Kalburgi case.

Umadevi, in her 2017 plea, drew a parallel between Kalburgi's murder and killings of Narendra Dabholkar and Comrade Govind Pansare in Maharashtra and sought an SIT probe by a retired Supreme Court or a High Court judge. She urged the top court to monitor the probe till it reached its logical conclusion as there was no progress in the investigation conducted so far by the Karnataka police.

The court had earlier sought to know if there was a "common thread" in murder cases of Communist leader Pansare and rationalist Dabholkar in Maharashtra, and Kannada writer Kalburgi and journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh in Karnataka.
