Soha Ali Khan realises post engagement: I'm traditionalist, romantic

August 4, 2014

soha ali khanMumbai, Aug 4: Soha Ali Khan is one happy woman after her engagement to her long-time beau Kunal Khemu. She's in fact disappointed to realise that she's "quite a traditionalist" as she always thought a "social sanction" to her relationship was not needed.

In an interview, Soha has opened up about love, engagement and marriage plans.

Excerpts:

Q. So you are formally and finally engaged to Kunal Khemu?

A. Yes. Neither of us is used to all this. My mother (Sharmila Tagore) is right when she says a formal engagement is not for the couple, but for others. As far as Kunal and I are concerned we're very happily committed to one another. The announcement is for others to be assured that we are committed to one another. We've been together for five years. Now we've made a public commitment, and there was an implicit promise that I made to Kunal when he proposed to me.

Q. What was that promise?

A. He did ask me if I'd marry him. But I was so excited on seeing the beautiful ring, I went around showing it to the five friends who were with us in Paris. I forgot to reply to his marriage proposal. I still haven't actually answered. Kunal has been joking about it.

Q. So are you happy with the formal announcement?

A. I don't know why, but I am very happy. Maybe the ring on my finger has something to do with it. We all have all these notions about ourselves. I though I didn't want any formal sanction to my relationship with Kunal. I am quite disappointed to know I am quite a traditionalist and a romantic. I always thought of myself as a practical woman who doesn't care for social sanctions. But here I am enjoying my engagement.

Q. You seem very happy?

A. When Kunal gave me the ring I was quite giggly and happy. Kunal went to great lengths to keep his proposal in Paris a secret from me. As you know, we live together and spend a lot of time together. And we're such good friends. We talk to one another about everything, even the smallest of decisions. That he had to take such a big decision on his own, must have been quite a task for him. And he has chosen the ring so well. I am really impressed by his taste.

Q. His good taste is already confirmed by your presence in his life?

A. That's true! I am glad his good taste extends to jewellery. It had to be the perfect ring because I have to wear it on my finger all the time. I don't wear any jewellery at all. I've always found jewellery to be an encumbrance. But now I am very happy to carry the ring around on my finger for the rest of my life. With some adjustments.

Q. What adjustments?

A. I've to grow my nails. My fingers are too short. My brother Saif suggested that I get a manicure so that the ring doesn't look like it's in the finger of a 12-year-old girl.

Q. Are you two getting married?

A. We don't have an answer to that. We need to take a serious decision. Of course my mother has now already started planning our venue and menu for the wedding. She is A wonderful events planner. She had been planning my marriage for a long time. Now that there's a name for the groom on the invitation card, she's all set. Now we need to think about what kind of a wedding, when, etc.

Kunal is a little disturbed because he thought he had bought himself four years of time with the engagement ring.

Q. Four years??

A. Maybe we will surprise ourselves by going into the next level of social sanction faster than we had planned. Kunal has a lot of integrity, fervor and ambitions. What I love the most about him is his consistency. In five years, he has never wavered in his thoughts and beliefs.

Q. You always said marriage was unimportant in your relationship with Kunal?

A. I always felt the only reason to get married is to have children. We've been very lucky to have very supportive parents. My mother is a very liberal wife and mother.

Q. Do you like the thought of having children?

A. I like other people's children!

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the
structure of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to
say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of
content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or two images.
Maybe you could space it out better?

An intriguing discussion is definitely worth comment. I
think that you need to write more on this issue, it may not be a
taboo subject but typically people do not talk about these topics.

Patna, Aug 3: Bihar DGP Gupteshwar Pandey on Sunday charged that Vinay Tiwari, the IPS officer from Patna who is in Mumbai to probe a case related to Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death, has been "forcibly quarantined" by civic authorities in the metropolis.

Tiwari is heading a Bihar Police team which is in Mumbai to investigate an ''abetment to suicide'' case on the basis of a complaint filed by the late actor's father in Patna.

"IPS officer Vinay Tiwari reached Mumbai today from Patna on official duty to lead the police team there but he has been forcibly quarantined by BMC officials at 11 PM today," Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Pandey tweeted.

"He was not provided accommodation in the IPS mess, despite request, and was staying in a Guest House in Goregaon," he said.

Sushant's sister Shweta Singh Kirti has tweeted, " What? Is this even for real? How can an officer sent on duty be quarantined for 14 Days?".

Rajput, 34, was found hanging from the ceiling of his Bandra residence on June 24 last.

Last month, Rajput's father lodged an FIR here of abetment to suicide naming actress Rhea Chakraborty, said to be close to the deceased Patna-born actor, and her family members as accused. Tiwari was posted as the City SP (East) in Patna.

The Mumbai Police, which is also probing the death case, have so far recorded statements of nearly 40 people, including those from Rajput's family, his cook and people from the film industry that include filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, film critic Rajeev Masand, director-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali and filmmaker Aditya Chopra.

May 10: Azaan is an integral part of the faith, not the gadget, says veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar, asking that the Islamic call to prayer on loudspeakers should be stopped as it causes "discomfort" to others.

In a tweet on Saturday, Akhtar wondered why the practice was 'halaal' (allowed) when it was, for nearly half a century in the country, considered 'haraam' or forbidden.

"In India for almost 50 years Azaan on the loud speak was Haraam. Then it became Halaal and so halaal that there is no end to it, but there should be an end to it. Azaan is fine but loud speaker does cause of discomfort for others. I hope that atleast this time they will do it themselves (sic)," Akhtar tweeted.

When a user asked his opinion on loudspeakers being used in temples, the 75-year-old writer said everyday use of speakers is a cause of concern.

"Whether it's a temple or a mosque, if you're using loudspeakers during a festival, it's fine. But it shouldn't be used everyday in either temples or mosques.

"For more than thousand years Azaan was given without the loud speaker. Azaan is the integral part of your faith, not this gadget," he replied.

Earlier in March, Akhtar had supported the demand to shut mosques amid the coronavirus outbreak in the country, saying even Kaaba and Medina have been closed due to the pandemic.

He had also appealed to the Muslim community to offer prayers from home in the holy month of Ramzan, which began on April 24.

"I request all the Muslim brothers that now that Ramzan is coming, please say your prayers but make sure that this doesn't cause problems to anyone else. The prayers that you do in the mosque, you can do that at home. According to you, the house, the ground, this all has been made by Him. Then you can do your prayers anywhere," he had said.

Hollywood star Joaquin Phoenix finally ended his dry run at the Oscars as he picked up the best actor trophy for his performance in and as "Joker" at the 92nd Academy Awards.

The 45-year-old actor had earlier bagged a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his turn as a failed, unhinged stand-up comedian who descends into chaos.

In a lengthy and rambling speech, Phoenix touched upon racism, climate change and gender inequality. He also remembered his brother River Phoenix, who died of a drug overdose at the age of 23 in 1993.

"When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric. He said, 'run to the rescue with love and peace will follow'," Phoenix said. At the Academy Awards and the entire Hollywood award season, Phoenix had emerged as an undisputed frontrunner even though he was up against the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio ("Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"), Adam Driver ("Marriage Story"), "Antonio Banderas ("Pain & Glory") and Jonathan Pryce ("The Two Popes").

An Oscar had eluded Phoenix for the most part of his career, despite his successful collaborations with Ridley Scott ("Gladiator"), James Mangold ("Walk The Line") and Paul Thomas Anderson ("The Master"), all of which had earned him nominations.

But as Arthur Fleck aka The Joker, Phoenix finally managed to break that jinx and became the second actor to win an Oscar for playing the DC comic book villain after the posthumous best supporting actor win to Heath Ledger in 2008.

As Joker, Phoenix took a deep dive into character, capturing its essence as well as maniacal spirit in both body and soul.

He lost 52 pounds to get into the physicality of Fleck and turned to a pathological disorder to get his distinct laughter right.

Phillips wrote the part keeping Phoenix in mind though the actor took some convincing to play the role.

Phoenix started the film's festival circuit tour on a positive note at Cannes last year that followed by stops at Venice and Toronto.

The film had also courted controversies, owing to its theme of gun violence in the movie as well as Phoenix's temperamental press tour that saw him walking out of an interview midway.

But critics and the fans loved the actor's riveting turn in the movie and his pointed speeches.

At the Golden Globes, he called out the industry for its insensitivity towards climate change and pulled up his peers for using private jets for travel, while at the SAGs, he joked how he would always lose a role to DiCaprio and asked Christian Bale to deliver a bad performance for once in his career.

In his acceptance speech at the BAFTAs, Phoenix acknowledged the lack of diversity in the nominations, calling himself a part of the problem. Phoenix's career most praised performances include "Signs ", "We Own the Night", "Two Lovers", "The Immigrant", "Her", "You Were Never Really Here" and "Inherent Vice".
