Udupi, Apr 27: In spite of the presence of Janata Dal (Secular) and Social Democratic Party of India candidates, the Congress party has managed to defeat Bharatiya Janata Party in the first elections to the newly created Kaup Town Municipal Council in Udupi district.

In the 23 strong TMC, the counting for which was held at taluk panchayat office here on Wednesday, the Congress won 12 seats while the BJP won remaining 11 seats. Both parties had fielded 23 candidates each, while the JD(S) and SDPI had fielded 5 and 4 candidates respectively. Three independent candidates also tried their luck but in vain.

Supporters of both BJP and Congress had gathered in large numbers outside the counting centre as both were neck-and-neck each winning 11 seats. Finally, the result of Ahmed Mohalla seat brought cheers on the faces of Congress supporters as their candidate Leela humbled BJP's Ratna by a margin of votes.

The prestigious TMC, which falls under Urban Development Minister and Udupi District in-charge Vinay Kumar Sorake's Kaup constituency, had recorded 75 percent voter turnout in the election held on April 24.

Since Mr. Sorake had personally taken the initiative to make Kaup a TMC, it was a matter of prestige for him to win the polls. On the other hand, the BJP, which had performed well in the recently concluded Zilla and Taluk Panchayat elections in the district, also had tried its best to upset Mr. Sorake's applecart.

Hubballi, Jan 6: Elected representatives of the BJP, Congress and JD(S) on Sunday decided to sink their differences and fight unitedly for Karnataka’s rightful share in the Mahadayi and Kalasa-Banduri water dispute with Goa.

The meeting convened by JD(S) MLC Basavaraj Horatti here saw participation of BJP ministers Prahlad Joshi and Jagadish Shettar, Congress and JD(S) lawmakers, among others.

After a 70-minute closed door meeting, MLC Horatti told reporters that they discussed the water dispute in detail and decided to take steps based on inputs from legal and technical experts on the rightful apportioning of water. “Today, we took the first big step towards the overall development of the region, unencumbered by political divisions,” he said.

Though the air was filled with a sense of jubilation as the issue had united seemingly hostile political parties on one side, a few activists expressed disappointment that the meeting failed to set a timeline to resolve the dispute.

Ahmedabad/New Delhi, Jan 22: Interpol has issued a Blue Corner Notice seeking information about controversial self-styled godman Nithyananda, who fled the country amid allegations of wrongful confinement of children, officials said on Wednesday.

A Blue Corner Notice is issued by the international police cooperation body to collect additional information from its member countries about a person's identity, location or activities in relation to a crime.

The Gujarat Police had sent a request to the CBI, the nodal body for Interpol matters in India, seeking a Blue Corner Notice against Nithyananda, the officials said.

"Interpol issued the Blue Corner Notice against the controversial godman this month," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad (rural), K T Kamariya, told PTI.

The police said they are now working to get Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice, a global arrest warrant, against Nithyananda.

The Gujarat Police had registered an FIR against Nithyananda after two girls went missing from his ashram in Ahmedabad.

He was charged with kidnapping and wrongful confinement of children to make them collect donations from followers to run his ashram.

Nithyananda was earlier declared wanted by the Gujarat Police.

While police continue to look for him, reports emerged in December last year that he has created a Hindu nation, Kailaasa, with its own flag and political setup, on an island near Ecuador.
