Mangaluru, Apr 28: The water scarcity in the region has forced the Dakshina Kannada district administration to ban lifting of water from Netravati river except for drinking purpose.

ibrahimDeputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim issued a fresh order banning lifting water from the river between Thumbe vented dam and AMR Power Pvt. Ltd.'s vented dam at Shambhoor for irrigation, construction and other non-drinking purposes.

“Bantwal Town Municipal Council and gram panchayats of the areas between the two dams could lift water for drinking only. Others should not lift water from the river for any other purpose, including for farming and industrial,” the DC ordered. The order would be in force at least for a week.

The order also banned lifting water from the AMR Power Project's dam at Shambhoor for any industrial purpose. It applied to Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd., Mangalore Special Economic Zone Ltd. and other industries.

The order has been issued because water storage at Thumbe dam, which supplies drinking water to the city, has depleted.

It said that the Commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation should get the help of the police to implement the order in case if there was any requirement.

It said that the groundwater level in district as a whole has decreased considerably due to shortage in rainfall and now the severe summer. Many borewells and open wells have dried up.

It has resulted in water scarcity, particularly for drinking. Water was being supplied through tankers in some rural and urban areas. Scarcity of drinking water is severe in the jurisdiction of Ullal City Municipal Council, Mulki Town Panchayat and Haleyangady.

Mr. Ibrahim said that about five lakh people lived in the jurisdiction of the corporation and one lakh people lived in the jurisdiction of Ullal and Mulki. All of them get water from the Thumbe. Now, the inflow at the Thumbe dam has completely stopped.

The order said that water from the AMR Power Project's dam has been released to the Thumbe dam, which is in the downstream, only for seven days, that is from March 29 to March 31, April 11 to April 13 and on April 20. Now, the priority would be to supply water for drinking purpose, otherwise the scarcity situation would only aggravate.

Bengaluru, Jul 29: A day after Congress staged a nationwide 'Save Democracy' protest, Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy slammed Congress for "dividing" the political parties and "buying MLAs" and questioned their "democratic behaviour" to lure Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLAs who supported them.

Kumaraswamy, in a media statement, said, "Is it a democratic behaviour to lure MLAs of other parties through political shenanigans and later merging with them?"

"Congress is an expert in dividing political parties and purchase of MLAs," said Kumaraswamy adding, "If you are dividing the like-minded party MLAs through deceit, who would support you?"

He alleged that the term "horse trade" in politics came to be used because of Congress.

Congress had tied to divide the Janata Dal (Secular) in 2004. To this, he added, "To avoid the party being hijacked by the Congress, I had to oust the Congress-JD(S) coalition government through a political coup."

Kumaraswamy further accused, "Haven't the Congress who is making a big noise about the purchase of MLAs divided the JD(S) in the past? Is it not a fact that for the sake of one Rajya Sabha seat, the Congress government in Karnataka purchased eight JD(S) MLAs?"

Both -- Congress and BJP -- are "criminals" in purchase matter, he added.

Rajasthan Congress is in turmoil after simmering differences between Sachin Pilot and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot came out in the open. Pilot was removed as the Deputy Chief Minister and the state unit chief of Congress.

The Congress has accused the BJP of indulging in horse-trading to bring down the Gehlot government. The BJP has rejected the allegations.

Ballari, Apr 18: Hosapete town in Ballari district of Karnataka gasped in disbelief as it turned out that 11 members of one single family are positive for the coronavirus.

The whole town has been declared a containment zone and is being surveilled 24X7.

The family includes seven members whose tests returned positive today, three who tested Covid-19 positive on March 30 and one other member subsequently.

The seven who tested positive today had been negative when they were earlier tested along with the others.

They have all now been shifted to isolation wards at the District Hospital in Ballari.

Including this family of 11, Ballari has 13 positive cases so far, with one case each reported from Ballari and Siraguppa towns.

Startled by this sudden upsurge from Hosapete, the district administration has set up 16 fever clinics to screen people and six COVID care centres to treat positive cases. There are two dedicated COVID hospitals, one at Ballari and another at Torangallu in Sandur.

A team of psychological counsellors have been put on duty to provide support to the patients at the isolation centres.
