Mangalore, July 30: Students and staff of St Agnes College have complained of misbehavior from the police who were deployed outside the College.

The students had gathered inside the College gate to protest against the Padil homestay attack were shouted at by Kadri inspector Venkatesh Prasanna and threatened of jailing students for violation of prohibitory orders, said Pallavi, a student of the College. “The Inspector said videograph these girls and highlight them in media and spoil their life”, said Labita, another student.

Sr. Marie Prem D'Souza, Principal of the College, also complained of being threatened by the cop. “The girls were inside the campus but they (police) were shouting at them saying that they are violating prohibitory orders. When I tried to intervene, Inspector Venkatesh Prasanna said he will file a case against me because I am the Principal and threatened me”, she said.

Students and staff also complained of double standards from the cop as protests were being held in other colleges too under police protection. “I told him if they (police) are not here to protect us, then there is no need for them to be around. I asked him to go”, Sr D'Souza said.

Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, Mr. Prasanna defended his actions. “As per law, when prohibitory orders are imposed, no assembly and shouting of slogans is allowed irrespective of whether it is inside a college campus or outside. I only told the Principal that the students and some of the former corporators who tried to argue with me, this is the law. In spite of me telling the Principal that it is against the law, if she continues doing what is prohibited, it shows she thinks she is above the law. Yes I did tell her that if the college authorities are not willing to obey the law, we will get the matter settled in court”, he said.

However, Deputy Commissioner Dr. N S Chennappa Gowda said that the prohibitory orders are meant only for public places which do not include college premises. The students are well within their rights to protest within college campuses, he said.

Vidya Dinker, activist, who also took part in the protest held inside the College campus condemned the action of police.

Bengaluru, Feb 20: Leaving the organisers of an event to protest against the CAA, NRC and NRP here red-faced, a young woman on Thursday reportedly raised "Pakistan Zindabad" slogan in the presence of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who denounced her action and asserted "we are for India".

The woman, identified as Amulya, allegedly asked people to shout with her "Pakistan Zindabad" after the organisers of the event under the banner of "Save Constitution" invited her to address the gathering soon after Owaisi came on the stage.

Soon Owaisi rushed to snatch the mike from her hands and was joined by others who tried to remove her from the state.

But the woman was adamant and raised the slogan again repeatedly. Later, the police stepped in and removed her from the dais.

Owaisi then addressed the gathering, saying he did not agree with the woman.

"Neither me nor my party has any link with her. We denounce her. The organisers should not have invited her here. If I knew this, I would not have come here. We are for India and we no way support our enemy nation Pakistan. Our entire drive is to save India," the AIMIM MP said.

JD(S) corporator Imran Pasha claimed she was planted by some rival group to disrupt the event.

The woman, he said, was not in the list of speakers and demanded that the police investigate the matter seriously.

Sources say Amulya hails from Chikkamagaluru and her parents have always been in the forefront of taking on government and its policies for well over a decade.

As per local TV reports, the student was taken to Upparpet police station, but later shifted to an undisclosed destination for more questioning.

Bengaluru, Jun 5: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Thursday said government employees and owners of tractors and other vehicles must return the BPL ration cards immediately, failing which stringent legal action would be initiated against them.

The CM issued directions in this regard to officials as he conducted a review meeting of the Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs department today. Proper supply of ration must be ensured to eligible beneficiaries and action has to be taken to prevent misuse of the facility by those not eligible, Yediyurappa was quoted as saying by his office in a release.

Nearly 63,000 ration cards were cancelled before the COVID-19 outbreak, he noted and directed officials to initiate a campaign to cancel all illegal ration cards. "this campaign would help in curtailing the financial burden on the State's reserves," he added.

In the backdrop of coronavirus pandemic, both the Central and State governments have distributed sufficient quantities of ration, and about 95 percent ration cardholders have availed the benefit, the release said. Under the Chief Ministers Anila Bhagya Scheme, 98,079 beneficiaries have been given 3 gas cylinders free of cost, it said.

Bengaluru, Feb 26: Congress leaders on Wednesday staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Vidhana Soudha here against BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yathnal's alleged remarks accusing freedom fighter HS Doreswamy of being a "Pakistani agent".

Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah, KPCC working president Eashwar Khandre also joined the protest.

Yathnal on Tuesday called Doreswamy a fake freedom fighter and a Pakistani agent, while addressing the media.

His comments triggered a controversy drawing sharp remarks from Congress and other parties.

Congress has demanded an apology from Yathnal and has also urged that his Assembly membership be cancelled.

"Session proceedings will not continue until Yathnal apologises," said senior Congress leader HK Patil while addressing the protest earlier today.

Siddaramaiah asserted that making "provocative" comments against such a freedom fighter is obnoxious.

Former KPCC president Dr G Parameshwar said: "Yathnal is a criminal who had mentioned in his election affidavit that he had 27 cases against him. He has made such loose comments against the freedom fighter. He should apologise for his remarks."
