Mangaluru, May 3: Hostels, hotels and restaurants have started feeling the pinch of water crisis in Mangaluru as the City Corporation has resorted to supply water once in three days.

waterMany hostels and hotels in the city are mainly depend on the Netravati waters supplied from the Thumbe vented dam, where the storage levels have fallen to 5.8 ft against a maximum 13 ft. Though they have borewells and open wells, the water table in them has gone very low.

Already, two prominent medical colleges in this educational hub have partially shut down their hostels and sent hundreds of students their homes till the situation improves.

It is learnt that Kasturba Medical College (KMC) has sent back about 400 MBBS students of second and third year batches from their hostels till May 15 and Father Muller Medical College has sent back about 75 per cent of the students.

The KMC has about 2,000 students, including some day scholars in eight hostels, while Father Muller Medical College has about 2,500 students from medical, para medical and nursing streams in eight hostels.

On the other hand many hotels in the city do not even have water to wash the vessels. Some hotels serving snacks and sweets on paper plate

Swarna Sunder, vice-president, Dakshina Kannada Hotels and Restaurants' Association said that some hotels had introduced eco-friendly bio-plates made from areca-nut sheaths or areca-nut leaf plates. But this did not go down well with many customers who are yet to get accustomed to it.

Mr. Sunder said river Netravathi drying up has hit hotels and lodges in Mangaluru, with the owners of middle-class hotels and restaurants worst hit. Many of them can't even depend on private tankers anymore as many of them are either getting too many requests or have been hired by MCC to supply water.

Meanwhile, the flow of customers to hotels has also increased with the tourist season beginning. Moreover, people who are unable to cook at home due to water shortage also come to hotels, Mr. Sunder said.

Mangaluru, June 21: A gang of miscreants intercepted a goods auto-rickshaw which was legally transporting beef from an abattoir to market and attacked its driver in heart of the city this morning.

The attack comes exactly a week after a gang of Bajrang Dal miscreants thrashed a cattle trader at Urwa while legally transporting four buffalos to Kudroli abattoir on June 13.

Today, a person identified as Abdul Rasheed was transporting around 200 kilograms of beef from Kudroli abattoir to Kankanady market.

Meanwhile, miscreants began to chase beef laden vehicle and managed to waylay it near Highland Hospital. They thrashed Abdul Rasheed and poured kerosene on the beef besides damaging the vehicle.

The miscreants fled in their car and motorbikes after passersby began to gather.

Dear DC Dr. Harsha, we want to know if you will take strict action on these anti nationals / rowdis / day robbers / terrorists who ransacked auto + beaten the auto driwer and stolen Rs. 10,000 from him though he was legally transporting the meat.   They same terrorists are involved in transporting live animals to beef export houses in Gujrat owned by Brahmins / Jains.   Will you be loyal to your duty and promise.   We will see how you will handle the issue failing which you will lose our respect and we will consider you as a dramabaz and phenku.   You should follow the law and treat everyone equally.  There should not be any pity on goondas/ terrorists belonging to sangh parivar.   The terrorists who thrashed the auto driver and damaged the auto and burnt the meat by pouring kerosene are not human beings and should be treated as anti nationals + terrorists.    We hope you will discharge your duty as per the oath taken by you while accepting your post.

Bengaluru, Feb 27: Karnataka Chief Minister and veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa turned 78 on Thursday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of leaders greeting him.

Modi hailed Yediyurappa as a "hardworking" chief minister and wished him long life and good health, while several state leaders flocked to his residence and greeted the Lingayat strongman.

"Birthday greetings to Karnataka's hardworking CM @BSYBJP Ji. He is passionately working for the state's progress, especially on farmer welfare and rural development. I pray for his long life and good health," the Prime Minister tweeted.

A large-scale "non-partisan" birthday bash will be held here later in the evening.

The felicitation function will see Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and former chief minister S M Krishna besides Siddaramaiah of Congress and H D Kumaraswamy of JD(S) sharing the stage.

Union Ministers D V Sadananda Gowda, also a former chief minister, Pralhad Joshi and Suresh Angadi will be in attendance.

BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B L Santosh and state party chief Nalin Kumar Kateel are among those who will be gracing the event.

While Santosh will release a felicitation volume in Kannada with 78 articles from a cross-section of people, including politicians, writers, bureaucrats, and spiritual leaders; Siddaramaiah and Kumaraswamy will unveil a coffee table book and documentary respectively.

Yediyurappa, on the eve of his birthday on Wednesday, had said whatever he has achieved is a result of the people's "blessings and faith" and requested well-wishers not to bring bouquets, flowers, shawls, sweets, turbans or any souvenirs to greet him.

The birthday function organised by "Yediyurappa Abhinandana Samiti" (Yediyurappa Felicitation Committee) is being seen in some quarters as an attempt by Yediyurappa and his loyalists to send a message to the party leadership that he was still "strong".

The BJP's current dispensation under Narendra Modi and Amit Shah has retired several senior party leaders who crossed the age of 75.

However, an exception was said to have been made in Yediyurappa's case after the BJP won 25 of 28 seats in the Lok Sabha election under his leadership.

In the 2018 elections, he spearheaded the campaign of the BJP which emerged as the single largest party but fell short of the majority mark following which Congress and JD(S) came to power stitching a post-poll pact.

However, the coalition collapsed in July last year, paving the way for return of Yediyurappa as Chief Minister for the fourth time.
