Mangaluru, May 4: Water famine is worsening in Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada district with every passing day as. Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim has appealed to the people to use water judiciously.

saveHe said that underground water table was also depleting in the district fast due to the high temperature. On an average, the district had been recording a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius. Open wells, borewells and tanks had been hit.

In some parts of the district the falling groundwater level has entered the danger zone. And things may worsen further if the same situation continues to prevail.

Mr. Ibrahim appealed to the people, particularly those staying on the banks of the Nethravati, not to lift water for agriculture and allow it to flow down as it was required for drinking in Mangaluru.

Kadaba water released

Meanwhile, following an order from Mr Ibrahim, water stored at Disha Hydel Power Project Dam at Koliyada Katta in Kadaba hobli of Puttur taluk was released with the expectation that it might reach Thumbe Dam from where drinking water is supplied to Mangaluru

The released water will have to traverse 71 km in the river course via the Kumaradhara and the Nethravati if it has to reach the Thumbe Dam, said Mangaluru City Corporation Commissioner H.N. Gopalakrishna.

It will have to reach 30 km down to a vented dam across Kumaradhara at Uppinangady first. This dam supplies water to Puttur town. Later, it would have to flow another 30 km down to reach AMR Hydel Power Project's dam at Shambhoor near Bantwal. If it was to reach Thumbe dam, water would have to traverse in the river course further 11 km down, the commissioner said.

The dam near Kadaba had about 2 million cubic metres (MCM) of water. One MCM of water would suffice for supplying for four days to the Mangaluru city.

Lucknow, Feb 4: Even as anti-NRC protests continue to rage across the country, the Lucknow University has queered the pitch by demanding citizenship proof from RTI applicants.

The Lucknow University (LU) refused to provide the information sought by the people who filed the Right to Information (RTI) unless they furnished the proof that they were Indian citizens.

Alok Chantia, one of the RTI applicants who was refused information by the varsity, said that he had lodged a complaint with the vice-chancellor of the varsity but even then he could not get the desired information.

"It is shocking how the university has twisted the RTI law as per its whims and fancy. It does not have any authority to do so," said the RTI applicant.

Chantia, also a faculty member at a degree college here, had sought details of appointment of teachers for self-financed courses and their pay scale.

"It is possible that some applicants who may not be familiar with the provisions of the RTI, may have furnished proof of their citizenship to the varsity to get the information but that cannot become a rule," he pointed out.

When contacted, university officials admitted that such a practice had been going on in the varsity for the past few years.

"This practice started during the tenure of the former vice-chancellor S.P. Singh and still continues," said a senior varsity official.

Bengaluru, Jan 29: The high court has granted bail to a 37-year-old Bangladeshi woman from the Christian community on the strength of Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019.

The court cited Section 2 of the amended Citizenship Act 1955, according to which minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered India on or before December 31, 2014 should not be treated as illegal immigrants, while granting her bail.

Allowing the petition filed by Archana Purnima Pramanik, an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh, who claims to be staying in India since 2003, justice John Michael Cunha on Monday directed her to furnish a bail bond for Rs 2 lakh to the satisfaction of the investigating officer and cooperate with the probe.

The judge observed the allegations made against her must be proved in a full-dressed trial. Archana was booked for obtaining documents such as PAN and Aadhaar cards and also fraudulently obtaining an Indian passport on March 28 last year. Based on a complaint filed by the assistant passport officer, Archana was arrested on November 7, 2019 and her bail petition was dismissed by a sessions court on December 4, 2019.

Born on March 23, 1983 at Tanore, Rajshahi district of Bangladesh, Archana came to India in 2003 to pursue a career in nursing. After obtaining a diploma in general nursing and midwifery at Ranchi in 2006, she worked in many reputed hospitals.

In 2010, she got married to Rajashekaran Krishnamurthy and the marriage was registered at Ranchi. After the wedding, she moved to Bengaluru and obtained PAN, Aadhaar and voter ID cards.

On April 1, 2019, Archana applied for a visa to Bangladesh for herself and her son. During her journey on May 20, 2019, they were detained at Kolkata airport and released later. However, the regional passport office issued a notice revoking Archana’s passport and she was arrested by RT Nagar police on November 7, 2019.
