12-year-old girl forced to quit school to work as domestic help in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, May 14: A minor girl who was forced to discontinue her education and work as a domestic help for a male medical student in his rented house at Babbukatte near Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city was rescued by the Childline.

girlSoon after receiving a tip-off through its helpline (1098) Childline Mangaluru acted swiftly and rescued the 12-year-old child labourer.

Their centre coordinator Sampath Katti said that a joint operation was carried out along with the officials of the labour department, district child protection unit and the police.

The rescued girl hails from a poor family in Kodagu district. Her parents were working as labourers in a coffee plantation in Virajpet. The plantation proprietor's son is a student in one of the medical colleges in Mangaluru, and the girl was brought here to work as a domestic help in his rented house in Babbukatte, Sampath said.

"We will enroll the girl in a school under the 'shaale kade namma nade' programme of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. The girl has been produced before the Child Welfare Committee for rehabilitation," he added.

The girl has revealed that even though she wanted to continue studies her parents forced her to work as a child labourer.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: With the reporting of the death of an 80-yr-old female from Hirebagewadi taluk in Belagavi district, the number of persons, who were died due to COVID-19 related disease, increased to 12, in Karnataka on Wednesday.

According to official sources, the deceased was a relative of another COVID-19 infected person, was succumbed to death this morning at a designated Hospital in Belagavi district.

Bengaluru, May 14: Reformed underworld don Muthappa Rai, who was battling cancer for the past year, was said to be in a critical condition at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, late Wednesday night. Doctors said he was on life-support at the time of going to press. Rai (68), realtor, entrepreneur and founder of pro-Kannada organisation Jaya Karnataka, had retired from public life after he was diagnosed with cancer. He was part of an ongoing investigation into gangster Ravi Pujari, who was extradited from Senegal recently.

Born in Puttur into a Bunt family, he started out as a bank employee in Bengaluru, and later ran a live band restaurant. In 1994, he was shot in a Bengaluru court by a man dressed as a lawyer, after which he was bedridden for a couple of years.

Rai Moved to Dubai in 1996. He was deported from the UAE to India in 2002, and was arrested in Bengaluru when HT Sangliana was the police commissioner. Both Rai and Pujari had allegedly been associated with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Bengaluru, Jan 26: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel has been served with a court notice asking him to personally appear before the special court for people’s representatives on February 24, in connection with a defamation suit filed by Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad.

Rizwan had lodged the defamation suit against Kateel and state BJP social media chief after the party, in a tweet during the 2019 Lok Sabha election, alleged Rizwan’s involvement in the manufacture of fake voter identity cards.

Apart from Kateel, head of the party’s social media unit has also been asked to appear in person at the above court on February 24.
