Speeding car rams into electric pole; cops avert major catastrophe

Mangaluru, May 28: In what could have been a major catastrophe, a speeding car rammed into an electric pole on an over-bridge at Thokkottu on the outskirts of the city in the early hours of Saturday.

The intensity of the collision was such that the electric pole broke into two pieces and fell on the same car badly damaging it besides injuring its four occupants.

While a 20-year-old man identified as Ismaeel (20), suffered severe injuries, the three others suffered minor injuries.

The incident occurred at around 3 a.m. The presence of mind of local residents and police averted a tragedy when the repeated phone calls to Mescom office landline remained unanswered.

It is learnt that the police personnel rescued the occupants of the car by lifting the electric pole using available equipments. Later, the police went to the Mescom office and fetched the linemen in their jeep.

A case has been registered at jurisdictional Ullal police station and investigations are on. The swift car also was seized by the police.

by looking at the car, we feel nobody would be alive, seriously god saved them. over speed may be the reason for this accident, when youths get together in car dont know what kind of energy drive them speed.

Mangaluru, Apr 29: One person was arrested on charges of murdering a middle-aged couple on Wednesday in Yellinje near Kinnigoli.

The area falls under the jurisdiction of Mulky police.

Police said that the deceased were identified as Vincent D’Souza (50) and his wife Helina D’ Souza (45).

The arrested was identified as Alphonso (55). He will be sent to judicial custody, said police.

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 7: Coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have recorded 17 and 13 new coronavirus positive cases between 5 p.m. on June 6 and 5 p.m. on June 7. 

16 among 17 new covid patients in Dakshina Kannada are returnees from Maharashtra, while one returned from Goa recently.

Maharashtra returnees comprise 14 males, including three teenagers t, and two females aged 32 and 41. The Goa returnee is a 32-year-old male.

All of them have all been admitted to the designated COVID hospital in the district.

With this, the total tally of coronavirus cases in Dakshina Kannada has risen to 203, out of which 47 are currently active. As many as 150 patients have recovered and been discharged, and seven have died.

Among the 13 in Udupi, 12 are Maharashtra returnees, while process of contact tracing of one patient, a 30-year-old woman, is going on.

The patients comprise eight males, including a 7-year-old boy, and five females. They have all been admitted to the designated hospital.

This takes the total number of coronavirus cases in Udupi district to 902, out of which 798 are currently active, 103 discharged, and one patient has died.

Bengaluru, May 21: The prestigious Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS) on Wednesday been postponed to November 19 to 21 2020 in view of the prevailing conditions.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister C S Ashwathnarayan, who is also the Minister for IT/BT, here.

Originally, the BTS was scheduled for September 21-23 this year. However, owing to anticipated inability of international delegates to attend the summit in view of Covid-19, BTS has been postponed, informed Dr Ashwathnarayan.
