The citizenry in the twin districts were affected as officials from key government establishments, participated in the strike and abstained from work.

The one-day strike was in response to the call given by the Karnataka State Government Employees' Association (KSGEA) demanding implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations.

All government offices in Mangaluru city and other parts of Dakshina Kannada district wore a deserted look on Thursday.

However, the staff at Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) resumed work after holding a token protest.

Around 400 MCC employees staged a demonstration for an hour and resumed work, said Gokuldas Nayak, MCC's Joint Commissioner. He said the employees were wearing black badges to express support to the government employees' strike.

Elsewhere, almost all government offices in the district and the city wore deserted look with employees abstaining from work.

Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner, said that workers on outsourced duties were on their job. Hence, counters like Bhoomi, Atalji Janasnehi Kendra etc., functioned normally and public were not affected, he said.

In Udupi too the employees registered their protest against the government. Attendance in government offices at the District Offices Complex was sparse. Only outsourced employees reported for work.

Members of district unit of Karnataka State Employees' Association staged a dharna outside the District Offices Complex. Subrahmanya Sherigar, association president, demanded pay parity in salaries of state government and union government employees.

Prakash Nayak, Dakshina Kannada district president of KSGEA said nearly two dozen States have implemented the Seventh Pay Commission but the Karnataka government has not taken a decision on bring pay scales on a par with Central government employees.

Mr. Nayak insisted that the government, while enhancing the salary, should ensure that there is no disparity in the salaries of Central and State government employees.

Bengaluru/Ballari, Jan 7: Former minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan of the Congress set a one-week deadline for the BJP government on Monday to arrest Ballari City BJP legislator G Somashekhara Reddy for his recent speech warning Muslims of dire consequences if they continue to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Police have already booked Reddy, younger brother of tainted mining baron G Janardhan Reddy, under section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) of the Indian Penal Code.

However, Khan took the fight to Reddy a step further. “If the government fails to arrest Reddy by January 13, I will stage a dharna outside his house in Ballari, come what may. Let them do whatever they want,” Khan told reporters in Bengaluru.

In his speech at a pro-CAA rally organized by BJP workers and ABVP activists in Ballari, the BJP legislator had said, “We [Hindus] are 83% and they [Muslims] are 17% and if we take law into hands, you know what will happen.”

Khan said on Monday, “I challenge Reddy, the coward, to unsheathe his sword and cut me down first. It is absolutely shameful for a legislator to speak such things against a particular community. Why is Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who often says Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, silent?”

On his part, Reddy on Monday said he stood by what he said. “What I meant was you Muslims should not get swayed by CAA protests and damage public property. We [Hindus] are sons of the same mother and live peacefully. However, they [Muslims] should not test our [Hindu] patience. I stick by my words 100%,” he said.

A delegation of the Ballari district Congress unit also submitted an appeal to the deputy commissioner, inspector general of police and superintendent of police on Monday to arrest Reddy for his provocative speech.

Bengaluru, Jun 7: A mobile app and a portal offering technology-driven solutions to manage and mitigate floods in urban areas were launched here on Saturday by Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka.

The mobile app 'Bengaluru Megha Sandesha' was developed to disseminate information on rainfall and flood forecast, location-specific dynamic weather directly to the public. "The in-built features of the app and the information provided for a city is the first of its kind in the country," a press release said. This is a system of providing rainfall, flood forecasts and early warning to the officials of government agencies in the city through SMS to their mobile phones, social media platforms and a dedicated web portal, the release said.

The information provided would help the civic authorities act in advance and manage the floods, it said. The portal 'Varunamitra' is for information on the weather. The information provided is based on real-time data from 100 telemetric rain gauges installed and maintained at various locations across the state, it said. Rainfall forecast is based on the weather research and forecast models developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ahmedabad, the release said.

The information on flood forecast is based on the hydrological model, hydraulic routing and automation of the results. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), took up this project on the urban flood model for Bengaluru city. The project was funded by the Central government's department of science and technology, the release added.
