Chennai, June 8: A gang of four hacked to death an RTI activist who sought to expose building violations and illegal power connections in Sowcarpet on Tuesday. J Parasmal, a financier from Kilpauk, was murdered on Baker Street in Periamet, hardly 500m from the city police commissioner's office.
Around 10.30am, Parasmal was going on his bike to his office on Narayana Moorthy Street in Sowcarpet when the assailants struck, police said, based on witness accounts. On Baker Street, a narrow lane lined with a few houses and shops, the gang surrounded him in an auto and two bikes. He dropped the two-wheeler and began running but the gang gave chase, cornered him near a cow shed and fell upon him with cleavers and sickles, even as he cried for help.
Police suspect that the gang may have followed him and struck when he was crossing the sparsely populated street. A resident who witnessed the murder said, "It happened so suddenly , I couldn't call anyone for help." The victim lay bleeding in front of my gate with the bike abandoned a few meters away , the resident said. "I just saw vehicles moving away ," he said. A few other residents who came out of their homes after the murder said they did not hear any sound.
Some people in the area called the police control room and a team arrived.Parasmal was taken to a private hospital and then shifted to the Government General Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.The Periamet police registered a case of murder and have obtained CCTV camera footage from a car service centre near the crime spot.
"We have obtained the registration number of the auto in which the killers came. We are also scanning surveillance camera images to establish their identity," said a senior officer. Parasmal, who is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son, had for long fought to expose building violations.
In 2014, his office building in Sowcarpet was sealed by the corporation without prior notice after he said the documents he obtained exposed official lethargy in acting against five illegal multistorey buildings in the area.
