Mangaluru, Jun 25: Whether police have already nabbed Naresh Shenoy, the prime accused in the murder of 51-year-old RTI activist Vinayak Baliga and interrogating him in an undisclosed location?

shenoydEven though police are calling this to be mere rumour, highly placed sources said that the police are delaying to announce the arrest as they get only 24 hours to question before producing him to court if they formally arrest him.

Sources said that Naresh was caught either in Kerala or Goa by Mangaluru police on Thursday or Friday. He had been at large since March 21, the day of the murder.

Incidentally, the police had filed a preliminary charge sheet in the case before the III Judicial Magistrate First Class in Mangaluru on Thursday, listing Naresh as Accused No. 1.

All the remaining six accused have already been arrested by the police and one of them is out on bail. Not revealing the place from where Naresh was secured, highly-placed sources in the police said that they were questioning Naresh in relation to the case.

Shenoy is the founder of Mangaluru unit of Namo Brigdae, later renamed as Yuva Brigade. Hence, he is popularly known as NaMo Naresh.

Vinayak Baliga was hacked to death by three persons near his house in Kodialbail. The police first arrested Vineet Poojary, Nishit Devadiga and Shiva alias Shivaprasad, who allegedly murdered Baliga.

Later police arrested photographer K. Manjunath Shenoy alias Manju Neereshwalya for allegedly helping Naresh in evading arrest. On June 18, police arrested Srikant, a close associate of Naresh, who was accused of hiring services of the three assailants.

The alleged inability of the Mangaluru police to nab the prime accused had led to severe discontent in Mangaluru as well as the State.

Several protests were held by activists led by rationalist Narendra Nayak and also by family members of Vinayak Baliga demanding arrest of Naresh.

They had accused elected representatives of being silent over the inordinate delay in arresting Naresh.

Naresh, who reportedly hoodwinked police by shifting his locations quite often, had filed anticipatory bail applications before the District Sessions Court and the High Court that were rejected. A complaint was filed by Naresh's family members before the Karnataka Human Rights Commission accusing the police of harassment.

I heard that this fellow surrendered to police before police could arrest him. The Sanghis were aware of everything and they only leaked the \arrest\" news to media to exert pressure on police so that they announce the arrest and produce him before court soon. Otherwise kai kal pudi pudi.."

Bengaluru, Jun 9: JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda on Tuesday filed his nomination as party's candidate for June 19 Rajya Sabha elections from Karnataka.

The former Prime Minister was accompanied by his sons former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and former Minister H D Revanna, state JD(S) chief H K Kumaraswamy and others, as he filed his papers at the office of Legislative Assembly Secretary M K Vishalakshi, who is the returning officer for the polls. JD(S) on Monday had announced that Gowda will be contesting the Rajya Sabha polls.

Announcing the decision, Kumaraswamy had said Gowda decided to contest following the request of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, several national leaders and party legislators, and it was not an easy task to "persuade" him to enter the Rajya Sabha.

The JD(S), which has 34 seats in the assembly, is not in a position to win a seat in Rajya Sabha on its own and will need support from the Congress with its surplus votes. A minimum of 45 votes are required for a candidate to win. If he wins, this will be the second Rajya Sabha entry for 87-year-old Gowda, the first time being in 1996 as the Prime Minister.

Gowda was defeated in Tumkur constituency by BJP's G S Basavaraj by over 13,000 votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. As joint candidate of the then ruling Congress-JDS coalition, Gowda had chosen to contest from Tumkur at the last minute after vacating Hassan-his home turf, to grandson Prajwal Revanna (a current MP).

Election is scheduled on June 19 to fill four Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka, represented by Rajeev Gowda and BK Hariprasad of Congress, Prabhakar Kore of the BJP and D Kupendra Reddy of JD(S) that will fall vacant on June 25, with their retirement. Today is the last date for filing nominations. With BJP not fielding any candidate against Gowda, his election is likely to be unanimous.

Bengaluru, Feb 20: Leaving the organisers of an event to protest against the CAA, NRC and NRP here red-faced, a young woman on Thursday reportedly raised "Pakistan Zindabad" slogan in the presence of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who denounced her action and asserted "we are for India".

The woman, identified as Amulya, allegedly asked people to shout with her "Pakistan Zindabad" after the organisers of the event under the banner of "Save Constitution" invited her to address the gathering soon after Owaisi came on the stage.

Soon Owaisi rushed to snatch the mike from her hands and was joined by others who tried to remove her from the state.

But the woman was adamant and raised the slogan again repeatedly. Later, the police stepped in and removed her from the dais.

Owaisi then addressed the gathering, saying he did not agree with the woman.

"Neither me nor my party has any link with her. We denounce her. The organisers should not have invited her here. If I knew this, I would not have come here. We are for India and we no way support our enemy nation Pakistan. Our entire drive is to save India," the AIMIM MP said.

JD(S) corporator Imran Pasha claimed she was planted by some rival group to disrupt the event.

The woman, he said, was not in the list of speakers and demanded that the police investigate the matter seriously.

Sources say Amulya hails from Chikkamagaluru and her parents have always been in the forefront of taking on government and its policies for well over a decade.

As per local TV reports, the student was taken to Upparpet police station, but later shifted to an undisclosed destination for more questioning.
