Bengaluru, Jun 28: Police Sub-Inspector turned BJP activist Girish Mattennavar and two of his associates have been finally acquitted by a local court, here in 13 year old case of bomb attack attempt on Karnataka Legislators' Home.

1terrormannennaEven though Mattennavar had openly claimed to have planted the bombs after his arrest and justified his action by saying that it was an attack against corruption, Judge Chennakeshava on Monday exonerated him and two others due to lack of evidence.

Mattennavar, a 26-year-old sub-inspector with Narona police, Kalaburagi, in 2003, had come to the city for rifle-shooting training, when he allegedly planted four bombs in the fifth floor toilets of the Legislators' Home, and made a call to the police control room alerting it of the bombs.

The callers had claimed that theirs was a crusade against corruption by politicians. The police had later arrested Mattennavar, Guranna Ammapura and Girish Babu, his associates in connection with the case, and charge-sheeted them.

Even though the local media had initially treated it as a terror attack, after the arrest of Mattennavar, he was treated as a crusader against corruption.

The trial of the case that dragged on for 13 years, ended on Monday in the acquittal of all the three accused in the case by the 66th City Civil Court and Sessions Court.

Vidhana Soudha police sources said the court had acquitted all the three accused in the case on the benefit of doubt for want of evidence. The owner of the STD booth from where the group had made the call to the police had allegedly noted down the motorcycle number when they returned again to fetch the helmet they had left behind.

This formed the main evidence against the accused. However, this evidence was successfully challenged in the court after which the case fell flat, said senior police officials involved in the case.

Mattennavar, who is now a BJP activist, expressed his happiness over the acquittal. However, after the judgement he was careful enough not to comment on his involvement in the case even though he had openly confessed to the crime 13 years ago.

Bhopal, Mar 11: After meeting with 19 party MLAs who have tendered their resignations, Congress leader Sajjan Singh Verma on Wednesday said they are neither willing to support Jyotiraditya Scindia nor in favour of joining BJP as they were "misled and taken to Bengaluru" in Karnataka.

"Nobody is ready to go with Scindia ji. They said they were misled and taken to Bengaluru, most of them said they are not ready to join BJP," Verma told media persons on being asked about the 19 MLAs.

"I just came from Bengaluru and now I am going to Jaipur. Besides 5-6 ministers and one MLA, we all are going to Jaipur. They (MLAs) have said they have the blood of Congress and they will remain in the party.
Since Scindia was a senior party leader, all our MLAs followed his order as a courtesy," he said.

The Congress leader further claimed that BJP is using both "muscle and money power" to influence Congress MLAs.

He also claimed that he is strongly in contact with 7-8 BJP MLAs.

On Tuesday, Congress sent two of its leaders -- Verma and Govind Singh -- to Bengaluru in order to pacify some of the rebel MLAs who are lodged in a hotel there and who claimed to have resigned from the state Legislative Assembly.

Most of the rebel MLAs are perceived close to Scindia and are apparently unhappy at Scindia being "ignored" in the party. The grand old party has been witnessing an internal turf war in Madhya Pradesh since the party formed the government in the state in 2018.

Scindia is likely to join BJP later today.

Bengaluru, Apr 13: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President and former Minister D K Shivakumar has demanded resignation of Minister In-Charge of COVID-19 for his alleged irresponsible comment, despite holding a responsible post.

Mr Shivakumar's comments came after Dr Sudhakar on Sunday shared a picture of him and his children in a swimming pool, on Twitter with a caption, ''After a long time joined my children for swimming hope maintaining social distance here as well…hahaha.''

However, Dr Sudhakar deleted the tweet from his account, soon after he was criticised for sharing such a picture, when the country is facing a health crisis.
