Yeddyurappa warns of action against dissidents

July 2, 2016

Bengaluru, Jul 2: Facing intensifying discontent in the party over his style of functioning, BJP Karnataka unit President B S Yeddyurappa today sought to quell it with a warning against "anti-party" activities by anyone, "however big they are".

YeddyurappaThe appointment of office-bearers and presidents of district units has triggered discontent against Yeddyurappa, with several party functionaries under the leadership of former Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa openly questioning his "unilateral" decisions.

They are demanding a rollback of appointments, stating that it was not discussed in the core committee (the highest decision-making body), but Yeddyurappa has refused to yield.

Stiffening his stand, Yeddyurappa while speaking at the party's state office bearers meeting here said without naming anyone, that those involved in anti-party activities, "however big they are", would not be tolerated.

"Anti-party activities will not be tolerated. For this purpose, I will be announcing a disciplinary committee."

"Anyone, however big they are or whatever the reason may be, if they involve in any anti-party activities will not be pardoned. If you have any problem, come let us sit together and discuss it. Instead of that if statements are issued it will create confusion," he added.

Eshwarappa skipped today's meeting, attended by party's state in-charge P Muralidhara Rao, Union Ministers Ananth Kumar, Sadananda Gowda and Siddeshwara, besides former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jagadish Shettar.

Blaming the media for glorifying "small issues" within the party, Yeddyurappa said "when there is infighting within Congress and JD(S), we will have to work together."

"We have a responsibility on us, so we have to be together and cooperate," he added.

Eshwarappa has held a series of meetings of like-minded leaders in the last couple of days, during which criticism was expressed over Yeddyurappa's style of functioning, the "high handedness" of his loyalists in party affairs and prominence given to those in his erstwhile outfit Karnataka Janata Party (KJP).

After one such meeting yesterday, Eshwarappa said his intention was to protect the interests of loyal party workers 'who are in pain' and safeguard the system that has been in place for long.

"Let Yeddyurappa say that he has made appointments after discussing with state core committee, I will surrender today itself," he said.

Yeddyurappa was forced to resign as chief minister in 2011 over graft charges, following which he quit the party to form KJP. He returned to BJP following the announcement of Narendra Modi as party's prime ministerial candidate ahead of 2014 Lok Sabha polls and was recently appointed state party chief.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: After Honnalli legislator MP Renukacharya, Ballari City MLA Somashekara Reddy and deputy chief minister Govind Karjol, it appeared the turn of revenue minister R Ashoka to show the BJP in poor light with controversial and provocative comments against a minority community. This, despite a gag order issued by state BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel.

Responding to questions on the Mangaluru International Airport bomb scare incident and how the main accused would have been treated had he been a Muslim, Ashoka on Thursday said "all anti-nationals must be shot dead". Meanwhile, Renukacharya, also a political secretary to chief minister BS Yediyurappa, continued his tirade against Muslims, insisting the government will not extend any "special package" to the community.

Soon after garlanding the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on the birth anniversary of the freedom fighter, at Vidhana Soudha on Thursday, Ashoka said: "All those who are singing the tune of Pakistan and indulging in anti-national activities, be they Hindu, Christian or Muslim, must be shot dead."

Asked to respond to former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy’s accusation that the entire Mangaluru bomb incident was stage-managed by the BJP government to divert attention, Ashoka said the JD(S) functionary "must measure his words" and not speak "like a film director who can project the police as villainous all the time".

"Kumaraswamy is a former CM. When in power, police were his closest friends, but now that he is not in government, the same police are villains," Ashoka said.

The minister reiterated the government’s stand — first floated by home minister Basavaraj Bommai —

that Aditya Rao, the main accused in the Mangaluru bomb incident, is "mentally unstable" and needs to be medically examined.

Renukacharya, meanwhile, justified comments made on Wednesday that the government will not offer Muslims "a special package".

"When they [Muslims] need development funds, they come to us and seek special packages. Once they get funds, they then vote for Congress or JD(S) in elections," Renukacharya said on Thursday. "We do not need people with such double standards. I will apply pressure on all ministers in the cabinet and even the chief minister to ensure they do not allocate any special package for the community."

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Leaving spectators awestruck, Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda ran 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds at traditional buffalo race Kambala, following which people started comparing him to former Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt.

Gowda, who is from Mudbidri town, accomplished the feat during a Kambala race in a paddy field in Kadri on February 1.

"People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field," said Srinivasa Gowda.

People took to social media and drew a parallel between him and Bolt. Twitterati hailed Gowda and his accomplishment on the muddy grounds.

Kambala is an annual buffalo race held in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

"I'll call Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI Coaches. There's lack of knowledge in masses about the standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I'll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested," Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Saturday.

Bengaluru, May 31: In spite of opposition, chief minister BS Yediyurappa has appointed his former personal assistant and maternal grandnephew NR Santosh as his political secretary.

Santosh is the fourth political secretary to the CM besides SR Vishwanath, MP Renukacharya and Shankaranna Munavalli.

Santosh was arrested for allegedly trying to kidnap Vinay NS, personal assistant of BJP leader KS Eshwarappa in 2017. He's also facing attempt to murder and dowry harassment charges.

The 30-year-old had fallen out with the CM's younger son BY Vijayendra soon after the BJP came to power and had been reportedly asked to keep away from him. He had identified with some MLAs who were up against the CM.

It's said the appointment was made to send out a message to the rivals after some MLAs launched a renewed campaign against Yediyurappa over a dinner meeting at BJP MLA Umesh V Katti's house.

Though Yediyurappa was not keen, sources said Santosh brought pressure from RSS and some BJP leaders, whose help he had sought to reunite with the family.

Santosh from Tumakuru is the son of the CM's sister's daughter. He was Yediyurappa's Man Friday and his job was confined to ensuring he took his medicines on time.
