Allegedly harassed by KJ George, Mangaluru DySP Ganapathi ends life

Mangaluru, Jul 7: In the second case of suicide by a police officer in barely two days, M K?Ganapathi, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) attached to the office of the Inspector General of Police?(Western Range) in Mangaluru ended his life in Madikeri on Thursday.

ganapathiThe Kodagu SP Rajendra Prasad, who confirmed the suicide, said that Mr. Ganapathi had hanged himself, but the police are yet to ascertain other details.

However, Mr. Ganapathy, while speaking to the TV channel in Madikeri in the afternoon, accused Minister K.J. George and senior officers in the department of mental harassment. He had even cited a threat to his life in the statement, and bemoaned that despite having served with honesty, he was being hounded.

According to sources, Ganapathi went to Madikeri from Mangaluru on Thursday morning and rented a room in Vinayak Lodge near the KSRTC?bus stand. Around noon, he left the lodge in full uniform and went to a private local TV channel studio and gave an interview. During the interview, Ganapathi reportedly said that ADGP?A?M?Prasad, DIG?Pranab Mohanty and former home minister K?J?George were harassing him and he faced a life threat from them.

Later, he returned to the lodge and hung himself from a ceiling fan, still in uniform.
The incident came to light only after the police went to the lodge, but it is unclear how they found out about the suicide. He reportedly left a suicide note, in which he is said to have blamed senior politicians and senior police officers for the extreme step.

Mr. Ganapathy had a long tenure serving in various capacities in the Bengaluru city police, but it was also marked by controversies with the official accused of being involved in multiple encounters and suspended many times during the last six years.

He had served as an inspector at Yeshwantpur, Rajagopal Nagar and Madiwala police stations and had killed a rowdy sheeter, Prashanth alias Pacchi (20), in September 2010 in an encounter.

With the youth's mother taking up a legal fight saying her son was murdered, Mr. Ganapathy was suspended and a departmental inquiry later exonerated him.

He was again suspended in 2014 when he was inspector of Madiwala, when there were allegations that he had misused recovered property.

Due to these multiple inquiries and suspensions, his promotion from inspector of police to deputy superintendent of police was held up for over five years, which had caused him much heartburn, officers close to him in the department told The Hindu .

This incident comes quick on the heels of the suicide of Chikkamagaluru Rural Dy. SP Kallappa Handibag, who was accused of being involved in a kidnapping case.

His family had alleged that senior officers were harassing him and he had been fixed in the case.

Last month, Koppal Dy.SP Anupama Shenoy had quit her job, accusing the then Minister of State for Labour Parameshwar Naik of harassing her and not allowing her to discharge her duties.

New Delhi, Mar 3: Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kapil Mishra, who instigated violence in northeast Delhi by provoking mobs, has now been provided with 24x7 security. After he claimed threat to his life, he has been provided with “Y” category security — which entitles him to six security personnel round-the-clock to guard him in and outside the city.

He had fought the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections by giving inflammatory remarks around the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act in Shaheen Bagh, and lost to Aam Aadmi Party candidate. But he continued to issue provocative remarks.

While there is clear evidence of his scandalous statements just a day before the violence was unleashed on Muslims in Delhi last week where around 50 people were killed, no action has been taken against him so far. Instead, he is being treated as a hero in his party.

As per sources, Mishra complained that he got life threats over the past week in wake of the violence and based on his request, the Delhi Police has provided the security cover.

Mishra had taken to social media platform Twitter and alleged that he was receiving threats via WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook, from Indian and foreign accounts.

“I am constantly being threatened with murder on the phone, on WhatsApp, on email. Hundreds of threats are being given continuously from the country and abroad. I don’t fear this hate campaign against me,” he had said on Twitter on March 1.

Mishra had on February 23 made an incendiary speech, following which North-East Delhi witnessed anti-Muslim violence.

The Supreme Court of India on Monday said it will on Wednesday (March 4) hear a plea that sought immediate FIRs against Kapil Mishra, Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur and other leaders for their recent hate speech, which allegedly triggered the violence in Delhi. The plea was filed by Delhi violence survivors.

The apex court bench, comprising Chief Justice SA Bobde, listed the matter for hearing after senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, who is appearing on behalf of the survivors told the SC that the Delhi High Court had last week adjourned the matter for six weeks even as “people are dying every day”.

The decision of the Indian government to ease the coronavirus-linked global travel restrictions imposed on those having OCI cards has given a big relief to many stranded overseas citizens of India across the world.

OCI card is issued to people of Indian origin globally which gives them almost all the privileges of an Indian national except for the right to vote, government service and buying agricultural land. The OCI card gives them a visa-free travel to India.

On Friday, the central government allowed certain categories of OCI card holders, who are stranded abroad, to come to the country. Earlier, according to the regulations issued by the Indian government in April, visas of foreign nationals and OCI cards were suspended as part of the new international travel restrictions following the COVID-19 pandemic.

This privilege of visa free travel to India was causing distress among a large number of people of Indian-origin and Indian citizens in countries like the US whose children were OCI card holders as they were born in this country.

Many Indian parents, several of whom lost their jobs as a result of the economic crisis due to coronavirus pandemic, but were not allowed to take the special evacuation flights of Air India from various US cities, took to social media and urged the Indian leaders to allow them to travel to India.

“This is a big relief for the OCI card holders. It was a humanitarian crisis in the making. I am pleased that the Indian Government listened to their voices,” said social activist Prem Bhandari, chairman of Jaipur Foot USA, who has been taking up the cause of the OCI card holders.

Dr Arathi Krishna, former deputy chairperson of NRI Forum of Karnataka government, who had been demanding this relaxation, many of the thousands of stranded OCI card holders in defferent parts of the world were in pursuading her to exert pressure on the authorities concerned for this much needed relaxation.

The restrictions on traveling of OCI card holders to India was issued by govt of India on March 13 in the wake of global outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

She said: "Many parents who are Indian nationals could not travel for emergency purpose to India after repatriation flights started due to their minor children being OCI card holders. Many children who were OCI card holders could not travel to India to perform last rites when there was death in their family due to these restrictions"

"I was constantly pressurising and bringing these issues to the attention of ministry officials in External Affairs and Home Affairs departments. I was following up with Mr Dammu Ravi who is heading the COVID task force  task firce in the ministry of overseas Indian affairs who took interest in solving this problem through his consistent efforts with MHA. Iam thankful to Fireign Secretary too for his efforts and concern and to MHA for making it easier now for OCI card holders to travel in repatriation flights with emergency reasons," she said.
