Mangaluru, Apr 7: Five years after the formation of the police commissionerate, Mangaluru city police on Tuesday launched a dedicated web portal to give people online access to the police department.

Director General and Inspector-General of Police (DG&IGP) Om Prakash formally inaugurated the website www.mangalorecitypolice.com in the presence of IGP (Western Range) Amrit Paul and Mangaluru City Police Commissioner S Murugan on Tuesday, along with launching a new user-friendly mobile application for Android phones for traffic related concerns.

Web portal with FAQs, online forms

The new dedicated website provides details such as contact numbers of top police officials such as the police commissioner, deputy police commissioner and assistant police commissioner along with those of inspectors of all police stations.

Speaking after the inauguration of the web portal, DCP (Law & Order) K Santosh Babu told mediapersons that all application forms pertaining to permits would be available online for the convenience of citizens. The website will also contain a section on frequently asked questions (FAQs), along with which there will be a facility for people to report incidents occurring in the city commissionerate limits with information and images, he said.

One-of-its-kind mobile app

The Mangaluru City Police also launched an app which will be shortly available in Google Play store on Android phones.

DCP Santosh Babu said that the app would primarily include six sections such as – Traffic Offence, Live Traffic, Emergency, Traffic Signs, Report Incident and Contact numbers.

One interesting feature in the app is the option available to view ‘Live Traffic’ – which will show the user convenient traffic routes to get around in Mangaluru city at real-time and also show if chosen routes were congested with traffic.

Similar to the option imbedded in the web portal, the option ‘Report Incident’ can be used to report traffic emergencies or violations directly to top police officials such as police commissioner, two deputies and police control room with information and images.

Besides this, people also can get helpline numbers like women help lines, child help line, fire service, ambulance, control etc.

After inaugurating the web portal, Mr Om Prakash told mediapersons that the demand for three new police stations in Mangaluru city police commissionerate limits (Traffic South, Kaikamba and Jeppu) would be taken into consideration.

With regard to the demands of retired police personnel, he said that the department had formed a committee to go through details of new schemes that could accommodate the demands of retired police personnel, since Arogya Bhagya could not be extended to such personnel.

Bengaluru, Apr 28: A local court in Karnataka on Tuesday granted bail to a CRPF commando who was arrested by state police officials for alleged assault on them during COVID-19 lockdown duty, a charge contested strongly by the paramilitary.

The jawan has been taken to the jungle warfare training school of the paramilitary force in Belagavi district, a senior official said.

Constable Sachin Savant of the 207th CoBRA battalion was granted regular bail by a court located in Chikodi taluka of the district, he said.

A team of CRPF and CoBRA officials were present in the court during the proceeding during which the state police did not oppose the bail, the official said.

The commando was arrested by police on April 23 from Examba village (Belagavi district) when he was washing his bike outside his house without wearing a mask, as required under the coronavirus prevention protocol.

An altercation and physical fight took place between the two sides, following which the trooper was taken to the local police station and arrested.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had on Monday taken up the case with the Karnataka director general of police (DGP), calling the incident "unpleasant".

The CRPF letter said commando Savant was "manhandled, ill-treated, paraded to the police station barefooted, kept in chains and handcuffs" by police personnel and sought the intervention of state Director General of Police Praveen Sood.

The paramilitary had said that from the scrutiny of a viral video on social media of the incident "it is apparent that the conduct of the police personnel was not citizen-centric".

A police report had said the CoBRA commando "started the altercation" with the beat constable and another policeman accompanying him, and "assaulted" them.

As per the official Twitter handle of the Karnataka DGP's on Monday evening, "IGP (inspector-general of police) Belagavi has been asked to enquire into the incident involving the CRPF constable and action will be taken against guilty after receipt of the report".

The Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit of the CRPF specialises in guerrilla tactics and jungle warfare.

Kozhikode, Jun 14: A mosque in Kuttichira of Kozhikode has found a unique way to avoid crowding amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee that runs the mosque has started issuing smart cards to people for offering prayers and simultaneously encouraging social distancing.

"The committee has given smart cards with numbers to the people in the surroundings of the Masjid. One who enters the mosque premises has to rub their hands with sanitizers. They also have to tell their identity on camera. The automatic system has been put in place to save the address and phone number. Next time onwards they have to say their smart card number only so that other details will be automatically filled," said Muhammad Sajjad, who is part of the Mosque committee.

"The door of the mosque will open automatically after swiping the card. We have fit in a sensor on the doors. We have also made marks inside the mosque area so that people can abide by social distancing norm," he added.

A couple of days back the Kerala government has rolled out an order allowing the opening of places of worship, malls and restaurants from June 9 in strict accordance with guidelines and social distancing norms. As per the guidelines, pregnant women and those with co-morbidities should not visit any places of worship. Those with symptoms should not be allowed.
