Time for movement to fight divisive forces: Siddaramiah

August 15, 2016

Bengaluru, Aug 15: Terming as "shameful" recent incidents of atrocities on Dalits, minorities and women in the country, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said a movement akin to the freedom struggle needed to be launched to fight divisive forces.

Delivering his Independence Day speech at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground here after unfurling the national flag, he said a nation was best built with love, mutual co-operation and amity, and not by mutual hatredness and ill-will.

"In recent times, the country has witnessed certain inhuman incidents, such as atrocities on Dalits, minorities and women which have made every right-thinking Indian to hang his head in shame and question the very existence of civilised society," he said.

Siddaramaiah said: "Time has indeed come when we need to launch a movement akin to the freedom struggle to fight against divisive forces, he said adding that it is also the time, when we need to sustain our efforts to remove poverty, illiteracy, superstitions, casteism and communalism which are plaguing our onward march towards progress and prosperity."

Patriotism, in its truest sense, was respecting the freedom of others to follow the practices of their choice. "Patriotism cannot be reduced to mere sloganeering. Patriotism is ushering in an equitable society through the ideals enunciated in the Constitution of India," he said.

He said the concept of freedom was neither shallow nor narrow and it was not merely limited to any particular field, let alone politics.

"Freedom exists in the use of language, observance of cultural and traditional practices including dress and eating habits," he added.

Stating that the result of his government's 'sincere efforts' during the last three years was before the people to be seen, the Chief Minister said it was a matter of "immense pride" that through the four budgets presented, his government had been able to fulfill nearly three-fourths of the promises made by the Congress in its election manifesto.

Siddaramaiah also reviewed the parade and took salute from different contingents during the march past as part of the 70th Independence Day celebrations.

Bengaluru, Jul 19: A viral video claiming to show crowded condition of a hospital treating COVID-19 patients in the city was found to be false with police on Sunday arresting a person for allegedly circulating it on social media.

Police said such videos have the potential to create panic and asked people to refrain from spreading them.

The arrest was made within hours of the police announcing registration of a case in connection with the video that showed a crowd of people wearing masks at an "outpatient ward" of a hospital, falsely identified as Victoria Hospital, a major dedicated COVID facility here.

The video went viral on social media.

"City Crime Branch swiftly identified and arrested this person who has been circulating false videos of panic in Victoria Hospital, Bangalore. Kudos to all doctors and medical professionals who are doing their best. False news busted," Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao tweeted.

Police said such videos have the potential to create panic in society and asked people to refrain from it.

"Covid False video about conditions of hospitals in Bangalore circulated on social media. Case registered in Cybercrime PS. While government, society at large fighting the pandemic, some are creating/forwarding messages/videos which has potential to create panic in society. Refrain from it," Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Sandeep Patil tweeted.

The video showed scores of people wearing masks gathered in a small space allegedly at an Out-Patient Department in a hospital, and a person filming it, claiming to be a doctor expressing concern that it was a threat to all medical staff, including the patients.

Official sources said the video was reportedly from a hospital in one of the northern states and not from Victoria Hospital.

"I am sure that the Chief Minister will take action on all these types of activities. We have already petitioned the DGP. Suo moto case should be registered immediately," the Karnataka Congress Chief told media.

Speaking about the video conference meeting that Congress President Sonia Gandhi held with all Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) presidents via video conference, he said: "She has given us directions that the party has to play its own role. She said that the party needs to be very active, apart from the government."

With regards to the farmer's struggles due to the national lockdown, the Karnataka Congress Chief said that the farmers are in a 'very grim situation'. "I appeal to all the people of Karnataka that we should go to the fields and discuss with farmers and buy the materials. Bengaluru, Mar 18: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Wednesday met the Director-General of Police in Bengaluru and demanded police protection for Madhya Pradesh Congress MLAs and the removal of BJP workers from the hotel in Bengaluru, where the legislators are currently lodged.

"The (Madhya Pradesh) legislators have come here and have requested police protection, that is all. Let the police give them protection, our candidate (Digvijaya Singh) has come, let him meet the legislators. Why are BJP workers protecting them? We know that they are under threat and hence we need to vacate them (BJP workers)," Shivakumar told reporters here after the meeting.

"We will give protection to our men and that is why we are telling them they cannot stop us. They should be in a free and fair position. I have communicated to DGP that BJP needs to vacate," he added.

Earlier today, Congress' Rajya Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh and former chief minister Digvijaya Singh was placed under preventive arrest after he sat on a dharna near Ramada Hotel here, allegedly for not being allowed by police to meet the 21 Congress rebel MLAs lodged in a hotel.

"I am a Rajya Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh, voting is scheduled for March 26. My MLAs have been kept here, they want to speak to me, their phones have been snatched, the police is not letting me speak to them saying there is a security threat to MLAs," Singh told reporters.

Singh who sat on the dharna with a face mask on said: "We were expecting them to come back, but when we saw they're being held back, messages came from their families...I personally spoke to five MLAs, they said they're captive, phones snatched away, there is Police in front of every room. They're being followed 24/7," Singh said.

The development comes amid the political crisis in Madhya Pradesh after the exit of Jyotiraditya Scindia from the Congress party.

Scindia's departure was followed by 22 Congress MLAs resigning from the party as well as from the state legislative Assembly.

The resignation of these MLAs has left the Kamal Nath government below the majority mark.
