Mangaluru, Aug 17: Hundreds of ABVP activists on Wednesday staged a demonstration in the city in protest against alleged anti-India slogans raised at a function in Bengaluru last week.

Slogans were allegedly raised at a programme organized at the United Theosophical College where action of Indian Army in the Kashmir valley was criticized, especially the killing of Burhan Wani, who allegedly had links with the Hizbul Mujahideen.

Students from different colleges in Mangaluru gathered at Ambedkar Circle and then marched towards Hamilton Circle near state bank bus terminus were a protest meeting was held.

Speaking on the occasion, ABVP District Convenor Naveen said that by hailing Burhan Wani as martyr the organisers of the event insulted the soldiers of the Indian Army who laid down the lives fighting for the nation.

The state government must derecognize both Amnesty International (AI), organisers of the programme and United Theosophical College for allowing AI to hold such a program under Sedition laws, he said.

He also condemned the State government for the baton charge against ABVP agitators in Bengaluru. “Instead of inquiring into the complaint of raising anti-national slogans, the State government allowed police to chase away protesting ABVP activists in Bengaluru,” he said.

ABVP Mangaluru Taluk Convenor Sudhip Shetty said State government has to be cautious of groups in Bengaluru that are speaking against the nation and the Army.

He alleged that by trying to project the Indian Army, which according to him was trying to curb terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir, in bad light, the organisers had indulged in anti-national activities.

They sought the immediate arrest of those who reportedly raised Pro-Pakistan slogans' during the programme.

The agitators warned that they would not disperse until the Deputy Commissioner K.G. Jagadeesha personally receive their memorandum. Around noon, Mr. Jagadeesha received the memorandum and said it will be forwarded to Governor Vajubhai Vala.

Mangaluru, May 28: A pregnant woman who returned from Dubai in a repatriation flight suffered miscarriage after she was allegedly denied entry to her apartment flat and also refused proper treatment in the institutional quarantine.

Fathima was put in a paid quarantine facility after she returned on May 12 flight for her first delivery.

On the second day of her return, she tested negative for Covid-19 in the first test. As per SOP (Standard operating procedures) for pregnant women, she was ready to shift to her apartment, Shivdeep Residency, located at Shivbhag in the city for home quarantine.

However, the members of the Resident Welfare Association of the apartment who got a whiff of her arrival, called an emergency meeting the previous night and reportedly informed the pregnant woman that her entry to the flat would put other residents in trouble and suggested that she stay away.

Sources said the RWA consists of some serving and retired police officials.

With no other go, the woman continued in the paid quarantine.

Treatment for a pregnant woman?

Fathima's father-in-law Azeez Bastikar said the doctors who attended her during the quarantine did not provide proper healthcare required for a pregnant woman and also refused to touch her, out of fear.

Many a time, they did not even check her BP, saying that they ‘forgot to bring the kit’. When her situation worsened, the family members contacted several hospitals in the city but all of them allegedly refused to admit her, fearing the sealing down of the hospital in case she tests positive on the 14th day COVID test.

Finally, the six and half months pregnant woman was shifted to a clinic on Wednesday after her 14th day test had turned negative.

The doctors who checked her found out that she had suffered a miscarriage and operated on her to remove the stillborn. The doctors said further delay would have costed the woman her life.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Azeez Bastikar approached Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, seeking action against the doctors and hospitals who denied treatment and the RWA who refused her entry to the apartment.

Stating that the ill-treatment meted out to her daughter-in-law by doctors and others added to her trauma resulting in the miscarriage, he appealed to the authorities to ensure that no one else is treated in a similar manner.

He said that Fathima and her husband live in Dubai and that she came to India for a safe delivery as the situation was critical in Dubai.

The paid quarantine facility where she had to continue after RWA denied her access, charged her Rs 60,000 for her stay.

Meanwhile, the MCC commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde on Thursday issued a notice to Shivdeep Apartment for refusing Fathima's entry.

The apartment has to respond within three days, failing which legal action will be initiated against it.

The department recommended the use of a free app developed by TCS: "TCS iON Digital class room" or any other App recommended by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to conduct the online classes.

Bellary, Jan 4: A BJP MLA has apparently threatened 'minority' Muslims against participating in anti-CAA protests, saying that opposing the new Citizenship Act will not be good for them and they will have to face serious repercussions.

"It's just a caution for those who are protesting against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act). We are 80 per cent and you (Muslims) are 18 per cent. Imagine what will happen if we take charge," MLA Somashekar Reddy told a gathering here on Friday.

"Beware of the majority when you live in this country. This is our country. If you want to live here, you will have to, like the Australian Prime Minister said, follow the country's traditions," he added.

He said: "So, I warn you that CAA and NRC are made by Modi and Amith Shah. If you will go against these acts, it won't be good."

Continuing to spew venom, the MLA further said, "If you wish, you can go to Pakistan. We don't have any issues. Intentionally, we would not send you."

He said that the community should live in harmony with Hindus. "If you will act as enemies, we should also react like enemies," he said.

Earlier, Bengaluru BJP MP Tejaswi Surya reportedly called CAA opposers as "puncturewalas".

The nation has been witnessing massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). But Prime Minister Narendra Modi has specifically stated that the NRC was never discussed.
