Mangaluru, Aug 18: A day after a Bharatiya Janata Party worker was beaten to death by a group of cow vigilantes in Udupi, activists of left-wing groups on Thursday staged a protest in Mangaluru demanding stringent action against those who disrupt peace in the society.

The protest was organised by Democratic Youth Federation of India and Students' Federation of India, the youth and students wings of Communist Party of India (Marxist) respectively. Members of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti and other likeminded groups also joined the protest held in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner in the city.

Ironically, the BJP leaders of coastal Karnataka, who normally give a bandh call in the region if a Hindu was attacked by people belonging to the other communities for any reason, today are not in a position to give any statement over the incident.

Addressing the protesters, Muneer Katipalla, state president of DYFI, took on the leaders of Sangh Parivar for their “helpless silence” over the brutal murder of their own follower by so called gau rakshaks'.

He said that the latest incident of mob lynching once again proved that Hindutva ideologues always instigate people from backward classes against other backward classes and oppressed sections.

Local DYFI leaders Santosh Kumar Bajal, Dayanada Shetty, Imtiyaz BK, SFI leaders Charan Shetty, Nitin Kuttar, Dalit leaders Raghu Yekkar, Laxman Kanchan participated in the protest among others.

A group of around 30 people owing allegiance to Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal on August 17 attacked Praveen Poojary (29), and his aide Akshay Devadiga (22) near Hebri in Karkala taluk of Udupi district under the pretext of illegal cow transportation. While Poojary, a known BJP activist in the region, breathed his last at a hospital, Devadiga is recuperating slowly.

Bengaluru, Jan 13: Right-wing organisations, along with BJP and RSS workers, will take out a massive padayatra in Kanakapura on Monday, protesting against the construction of a Jesus Christ statue.

The event organised by the Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) will witness a rally from the Aiyappa temple in Kanakapura to the taluk panchayat office, where a memorandum will be submitted to the authorities following a public meeting.

Ahead of the event, Congress leader D K Shivakumar, in a video message released on Sunday, urged the people of Kanakapura to maintain calm. The former minister cast apprehensions over the event scheduled on Monday and said provocative statements may be made to disturb peace and harmony in Kanakapura.

Shivakumar, who represents the Kanakapura constituency, said the motive of the meeting by the leaders and workers of the BJP and the RSS, along with seers of mutts, was to defame his constituency.

“If any remarks are made against me, my brother (D K Suresh) or people of different faiths in Kanakapura constituency, do not be provoked,” he urged.

“Members of the (Christian) community have prayed at the site for 400 years and are trying to install a statue of Jesus Christ. I have helped the community like I aided hundreds of temples and educational institutions,” he said.

Appealing to maintain peace, Shivakumar said that BJP and RSS leaders were free to petition anybody.

The BJP and right-wing organisations have objected to the construction of the statue at Kapala Betta, with the BJP government ordering a probe into how road, power supply and other facilities were provided to the hill. Recently, Christian leaders had petitioned Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to remove any impediments to the construction of the statue.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Leaving spectators awestruck, Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda ran 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds at traditional buffalo race Kambala, following which people started comparing him to former Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt.

Gowda, who is from Mudbidri town, accomplished the feat during a Kambala race in a paddy field in Kadri on February 1.

"People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field," said Srinivasa Gowda.

People took to social media and drew a parallel between him and Bolt. Twitterati hailed Gowda and his accomplishment on the muddy grounds.

Kambala is an annual buffalo race held in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

"I'll call Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI Coaches. There's lack of knowledge in masses about the standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I'll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested," Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Saturday.

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday asked Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar to be the government's spokesperson on the Novel Coronavirus crisis management effort, a move that is being seen as keeping too many cooks from spoiling the broth.

At a high-level meeting to review measures on COVID-19 containment, Mr Yediyurappa is said to have taken exception to his Cabinet colleagues making multiple, and often contradictory statements, leading to confusion.

''The CM has directed Mr Kumar to be the only one to brief the media on COVID-19,'' a source from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) confirmed.
