Mangaluru: Youth wanted in 16 criminal cases arrested along with 2 associates

Mangaluru, Aug 24: 30-year-old Vijay, wanted in at least 16 criminal cases, has finally been arrested by the Mangaluru South Police along with two of his associates.

Mangaluru City Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekhar told reporters on Wednesday that Vijay alias Monkey Stand Vijay was among 150 most wanted persons in the city. The other two arrested are Melrick alias Melrick D'Souza (20) and Praveen alias Chotu (23).

The all three arrested were working at a sugar factory in Raibag, Mr. Chandra Sekhar said. The police had been to Madikeri, Mysuru and other places in search of Vijay and his alleged associates. The police earlier had arrested five of his alleged associates.

The Mangaluru South Police had been looking for Vijay since May 16 after an attempt was made to murder Sandeep Shetty at Marnamikatta. Vijay had been released on bail a few days before he allegedly assaulted Sandeep Shetty with the help of his alleged associates.

Keeping a close watch on the movements of Vijay, Police Inspector Belliyappa and constables Manoj Kumar and Sunil Pereira obtained clue of Vijay's presence in Bekkeri village in Raibag taluk in Belagavi district. They went to the village and arrested the trio on Tuesday night.

Mr. Chandra Sekhar said that Vijay was involved in 16 criminal cases, including cases of murder, attempt to murder, rioting and robbery. Melrick D'Souza was involved in five cases and Chotu three cases.

He said that they will book those who gave shelter to Vijay and also those who financed his criminal activities. He commended the work of Mr. Belliyappa and constables Manoj Kumar and Sunil Pereira and announced a cash reward of Rs. 10,000 for them.

Mangaluru, Mar 1: Karnataka Minister for Major and Medium Industries Jagadish Shettar said that the flight service between Mangaluru and Hubballi will begin on March 29 under UDAN scheme.

Speaking to reporters on the sideline of the meeting of Industries Commerce of Magaluru, here on Saturday evening, he said while the city of Ports is the second busiest international airport after Bengaluru in Karnataka, other places, namely Hubballi, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Bidar, have come on the air map with the UDAN scheme.

Stating that UDAN launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was what the Golden Quadrilateral highway project of former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee had envisaged, Mr. Shettar noted that more flights are operating to and from Mangaluru now. This has paved the way for Industrialisation of the important city on the Bombay-Karnataka region, he added.

Bengaluru,  Aug 4: Karnataka has seen a substantial increase in COVID-19 recovery rate, which was 5.67 per cent in the last week, state Medical Education Minister Dr. K Sudhakar said.

"Every day there is an increase in recovery rate which is higher by 9.17 per cent in Bengaluru city. The overall recovery rate of the state by Sunday evening was 42.81 per cent and it is 35.14 per cent in Bengaluru," the Minister wrote in a tweet.

Minister Sudhakar also directed officials to resolve the issue raised by a woman who had written to him about her struggle to take possession of the body of her father in St. Johns hospital, Madivala.

The hospital she claimed was charging money to hand over the body.

"It is inhuman on part of the hospital to refuse handover of the body. I came to know about this incident in the media and responded immediately to help out the woman," Dr. Sudhakar wrote in his tweet.

Karnataka has so far reported 74,598 active COVID-19 cases, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Yadgir, Jan 21: A bag was found abandoned at the Yadgir Bus Stand on Tuesday morning that left the commuters in panic.

After receiving the information, a police team, along with a sniffer dog, rushed to the spot. When the bag was checked, the police found clothes and cash in it.

It is stated that a passenger might have left the bag in a hurry to catch the bus.
