Mangaluru, Aug 30: The Mangaluru International Airport has launched Swagat Seva', a unique initiative to help passengers, especially elderly people and women travelling alone.

SwagatSevaAccording to airport authorities, this paid service will make the entire procedure from getting boarding passes and X-Ray of baggage to being seated in the flight smoother and hassle free. It will help the passengers who are not familiar with formalities.

Over a dozen airports across India already offer such services in collaboration with private agencies. In Mangaluru the service started two weeks ago. The fee per head is Rs. 250.

A passenger should make the payment at the counters at the entrance of the departure and at the arrival hall to avail this service, said J T Radhakrishna, director of the airport.

While departing, the staff would take the luggage, assist in check-in and other procedures and lead them to the security hold area where passengers would be made to sit before boarding a flight. In the arrival hall, they would take the luggage, take a taxi and help till they leave.

This is a service and assistance of information.

Any way such needy persons are very few. Airport should provide this service as a courtesy without any charge.

Bidar, Feb 15: Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah on Friday demanded the State government to withdraw the sedition case against a mother and a teacher of Shaheen school immediately.

“The police can’t execute anything without the government’s permission. The sedition case against two women should be withdrawn immediately. I will raise the matter in the Assembly to draw the government’s attention,” Siddaramaiah told reporters after meeting the woman at the prison here.

He clarified that he visited the woman not to support the school, but to extend moral support to her.

“I am an advocate and I can clearly establish based on my experience that staging a satirical play doesn’t amount for sedition. It doesn’t even defame anybody. Three cases of sedition have been registered across the state,” he charged.

He alleged that the government was following dual policy. Though the Supreme Court had concluded that the demolition of Babri Masjid was illegal, a play dealing with the demolition was staged at Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat’s school.
The sedition case had not been registered for staging the play.

He charged that there was an undeclared emergency in the country as the freedom of expression was being suppressed.

Mangaluru, Apr 3: The Dakshina Kannada district administration’s decision to ban use of private vehicles, excluding permitted categories, from Friday for effective implementation of lockdown, began showing results since morning itself.

Mangaluru City Traffic Police and Dakshina Kannada district police erected several pickets at vantage places on arterial roads to check those moving without a valid reason. Several two-wheelers were seized during the checking while a few car drivers were let off with a strict warning.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), M Manjunatha Shetty, who was supervising a picket at Hampankatta, said that movement of private vehicles has drastically reduced in the city.
