Video showing Karnataka expat's plight in Saudi Arabia goes viral

Shivamogga, Sep 20: : Akbar Basha, a driver from Sagar in Shivamogga district of Karnataka working in the city of Najran in Saudi Arabia, has alleged ill-treatment by his employer and has requested for help from the Indian government.

1viral Mr Basha went to Saudi Arabia 14 months ago. In a video message sent to his friends on WhatsApp, he has alleged that his employer had not paid him so far. The video has gone viral.

“On demanding salary, the employer began to harass me. I was assaulted and verbally abused. My passport is with him and he is demanding 5,000 Saudi Riyal to return it,” he alleged.

He has said that he had informed the officers of Consulate General of India in Jeddah about his ordeal.

“The officers asked me to furnish my passport to send me back to India. I am not in the position to get back the passport from my employer,” he said.

In the 3.38-minute video Mr Basha revealed that he was sleeping on pavements in Jeddah and did not have money even to purchase food. He has requested Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj to help him to return back to his hometown Sagar.

His wife and two children are staying with his mother Zubeda in Sagar. Earlier, he was working as a construction worker here. Zubeda told presspersons here that her son went to Saudi Arabia by borrowing a loan from friends and relatives to improve the financial condition of the family. “My son is in distress. I request the government to take measures for his safe return,” she said.

Mangaluru, July 29: Justifying the transfer of Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, district in-charge minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari has accused Mangaluru MLA U T Khader of politicizing the issue.

The IAS officer was transferred by the Karnataka government on July 28, a day after a saffron activist issued a death threat against her on social media after she warned of legal action against the miscreants who attack cattle traders.

Condemning the development, Mr Khader had tweeted that the state government has punished the deputy commissioner instead of punishing the culprit, who issued death threat.

Responding to Mr Khader’s tweet, Mr Poojari said that the transfer of the officer was on administrative ground. “It is unfortunate that Khader politicized a transfer carried out by the government on administrative ground. This is not Khader’s time to protect any accused,” tweeted Mr Poojari.

It is worth mentioning here that Mr Khader was the district in-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada before Mr Poojari taking over the position.

Meanwhile, police has arrested a person in connection with the death threat against the IAS officer.

PIL in High Court for preventing religious conversion of SC/ST

New Delhi, Mar 12: A PIL was moved in the Delhi High Court on Thursday seeking directions to the Centre to take appropriate steps for stopping religious conversion of socially and economically downtrodden people, particularly of the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe community.

The plea claims that the government has done nothing to stop religious conversions.

The plea is listed before a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar on Friday.

The petition, by BJP leader and lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, alleges that many individuals, NGOs and institutions are converting downtrodden persons by "intimidating, threatening, luring by monetary benefits and by other acts, including miracle healing, black magic and more".

"Many individuals/organizations have started conversions of SC/STs in rural areas and the situation is very alarming. The mass religious conversion of the socially economically downtrodden men, women and children, and, in particular of the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe community, is on the rise in the last 20 years," the petition claims.

It further claims as per the 2011 census, Hindus constitute 79 per cent of the population down from 86 per cent in 2001 and if no action is taken "Hindus will become minority in India".

Upadhyay suggested enacting of a law to prevent conversions by force or deceit and to award jail term for any violation.

"Additionally, the State may empower the National Human Rights Commission to deal with the affairs of religious groups and analyse religious discrimination among them," he suggests.

Apart from seeking steps to prevent religious conversions by force, threats or deceit, the petition also wants directions prohibiting religious gatherings "intended to mislead people by making false and untenable claims" to lure ignorant masses to join a particular faith or religious group.

First of all we should know what is religion and what is its purpose.

Religion should be scientific to acceptance. It should not be blind tale.

Religion is a set of divine commands how to lead the life to be successful here and also it should lead to success if there is a life after the death.

If it can assure, we should not worry to accept. Such religion can not be more than 1. Because we all believe 1 Supreme God who has the control over every creature. If we understand and accept it, then we should accept 1 and only religion which is the real religion.

You can not force anybody to accept 2+2=5.

If religion can prove its doctrine to be not contradicting the science then no worry to accept it.

There should be open debate of all religions then the truth will come in black and white clearly.

Leave the panel to decide which is the right one. Once proved, brave people will accept it without fear.

No need any law. If you have good product why do you worry to sell it.

Bengaluru, July 28: Former prime minister and JD(S) chief H D Deve Gowda today threatened to launch a state-wide agitation in against the amendments made to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act.

Gowda’s opposition to the new law comes even as Congress leader Siddaramaiah is also doggedly pursuing it.

Demanding that the state government immediately rollback the ordinance empowering these amendments, the octogenarian leader said he personally would take to streets if the government failed to budge.

The B S Yediyurappa government has liberalised the land reforms law by removing restrictions on non-agriculturists from purchasing and owning farm lands.

The government has also amended the APMC Act and has tweaked labour laws, which are all “against the interest of the state and must be rolled back,” Gowda said.

Speaking to reporters here, Gowda stated that he had already written thrice to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa in this regard. "The ordinances have to be taken back. The amendments to Karnataka Land Reforms Act, by repealing sections 79-A, B and C, is an anti-farmer move. The APMC Act amendment, too, is against the interest of the state. The government has failed to speak about the impact of these amendments," said Gowda, who is now a Rajya Sabha member.

Elaborating on the amendment to the Land Reform Act, the JD(S) patriarch opined that by throwing open agricultural land ownership to anybody at all, the government was only helping real estate developers while pushing farmers into a “vulnerable” situation.

Amidst all this, there are now reports of funds misappropriation in Covid-19 relief measures and in procurement of medical equipment, he said, adding that it seemed like only the corrupt became stronger over time.

Further, Gowda lambasted both national parties for creating political unrest, referring to the ongoing political crisis in Rajasthan and the recent developments in Madhya Pradesh. However, he added that he would not wish to dwell on it much, while emphasising that his focus was primarily on strengthening his own party at this point in time.
