Shiv Sena newspaper office attacked after cartoon 'mocks' Maratha protests

September 27, 2016

Mumbai, Sep 27: The Shiv Sena's mouthpiece Saamna on Tuesday enraged the Maratha community by publishing a cartoon that appears to poke fun at the campaign for Maratha reservations that's being organised in Maharashtra.siv

Samna's office in Navi Mumbai was attacked later in the day, and pro-Maratha social organisation, 'Sambhaji Brigade' claimed responsibility for the incident.

The controversial cartoon shows a man kissing a woman on the cheek. The woman is holding up a placard with the message, 'Mooka Morcha,' or 'kiss' protest. It's a pun on 'Mook Morcha' which means 'silent'protest - the kind that's happening across Maharashtra.

Police said three youths arrived at Saamna's office on Tuesday afternoon, and allegedly pelted the building with stones before fleeing, damaging two or three glasses on the outer wall. They added that an offence had been registered against the vandals and that action would be taken against them.

The spokesperson of the Sambhaji brigade, Shivanand Banuse, told PTI: "We are condemning a cartoon which was published in Saamana. Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray and Saamana's executive editor Sanjay Raut must apologise to the women of Maharashtra. The attack was spontaneous and an expression of emotions of the Maratha community."

The Congress' spokesperson in Maharashtra, Sachin Sawant, has called Saamna's cartoon an insult to the Maratha community. The cartoon has also provoked angry responses on social media.

Maratha protests

In addition to asking for reservations, the protesting Marathas also want to see the Scheduled Castes Schedules Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act amended.

The law was enforced to protect members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from atrocities perpetrated by those belonging to upper castes, but there have been allegations that the legislation has been misused to file false cases against members of the Maratha community.

The protestors also asking that the accused in the Kopardi case - in which a 15-year old Maratha girl from Kopardi was brutally raped and murdered - be given the death penalty.

Belagavi, Feb 22: A madrasa in Karnataka’s Belagavi district hosted a Hindu-Muslim mass marriage on its premises on Friday, sending a strong message of communal amity. As many as 76 Muslim couples and 25 Hindu couples entered marital life on the occasion.

Madarsa Al Arabia Anwarul Ulooma, an Islamic religious institute in Bailhongal, 50km from Belagavi district headquarters, played host to the event that was organised by Jamia Faizan-ul-Quran and Issa Foundation, which has conducted mass marriages on a bigger scale in Gujarat.

The mass marriage comes a month after the 100-year-old Cheravally Jamaat Masjid in Kerala’s Kayamkulam in Alappuzha hosted a Hindu wedding, complete with a vegetarian feast for 4,000 people. A Hindu priest led the rituals, and the couple sought the blessings of chief imam Riyasudeen Faizy of the mosque.

At Bailhongal, moulvis and pontiffs led the marriage proceedings and asked the couples to read passages from Quran and Bhagvad Gita.

The Hindu couples were gifted a copy of the Gita, and newly-married Muslim couples received a copy of Quran. The organisers provided each Hindu bride a mangalsutra. Bailhongal MLA Mahantesh Koujalagi blessed the couples at the event, which was attended by more than 4,000 people.

Mohammad Rafique A Naik, a member of Jamia Faizan-ul-Quran, said they have gifted each couple a refrigerator, an almirah and a tailoring machine. Ranjita Kalala, a bride who married a daily-wage labourer, said her family couldn’t afford the cost of a wedding, adding, “When we learnt about the Bailhongal madrassa’s plan, we agreed to sign up because it also sends out a message of communal harmony.”

Mangaluru/Udupi, Aug 2: The twin coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi witnessed sporadic movement of vehicles and relatively less commercial activities today in spite of the withdrawal of ‘Sunday lockdown’ by the state government.

After the central government announced guidelines under Unlock 3.0, the Karnataka government has removed the complete lockdown concept on Sundays and done away with the night curfews too. So from today (August 2), there will be no lockdown on Sundays.

KSRTC operated its buses as usually. However, compared to other days, today the number of private and city buses on the roads in Dakshina Kannada was limited.

In Udupi, city buses remained off the roads as the number of passengers was less. However, KSRTC and NARM buses were seen transporting passengers.

In containment zones ban on movement of people will continue till August 31 in Udupi. The Santhekatte market used to function on Saturdays, as there was Sunday lockdown on earlier Sundays. Now the market will be open on Sundays only.
