Mangaluru, Sep 28: Harekala Hajabba, the unlettered saint of letters', who has created history by establishing a school at a remote village in Dakshina Kannada district, has entered into the textbook of Kerala state this academic year.

HajabbaIronically, the selfless achiever, who already has found a place in the texts of three universities in Karnataka, is not aware of the fact that his life story is being taught to the high school students in the bordering state.

A short biography of this orange vendor-cum-educationist titled Akshara Santa Harekala Hajabba' (Harekala Hajabba, the saint of letters), is one of the lessons in the Kannada text book part -1 prescribed for Class 8 students by Kerala education board.

The lesson is an extract from budding Kannada writer Ismat Pajeer's Kannada work 'Aparoopada Samaaja Sevaka Harekala Hajabba' (Harekala Hajabba, a rare social worker).

The 60-year-old man's unusual saga of struggle and success has already been included in the Kannada textbook for the students of the Davanagere, Kuvempu and Mangalore universities.

Hajabba hails from a small village called Harekala near Konaje. Despite being an illiterate, who survived by selling oranges on the roads in Mangaluru, Hajabba dreamt of spreading education among children in his village and surroundings.

He put his heart, soul and income into Neopadpu ZP Higher Primary School' (now, Composite High School). Whatever the school is today is solely because of Hajabba's efforts. After living a simple life of an orange vendor for years, his service was first recognised by a Mangaluru-based Kannada journalist who published an article on Hajabba.

From then on, there has been no looking back for Hajabba. He bagged several state and national level awards too. None of these has changed humble Hajabba. As expected, all the cash rewards have been utilised by Hajabba for his school.

Bengaluru, May 26: After Yogi Adityanath said that no state can take manpower from Uttar Pradesh without his government's permission, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar on Tuesday termed the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's move as "unconstitutional" and "against the right to freedom of movement."

"Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's move to restrict hiring people of Uttar Pradesh is unconstitutional and goes against the right to freedom of movement. Mr Yogi, please note that UP is not the private property of your govt. The people of Uttar Pradesh don't need your government's permission to work anywhere in India," Shivakumar tweeted.

"Mr Yogi doesn't understand the basic rules of governance in a democracy. Such actions lack common sense and will only make the people of Uttar Pradesh suffer more. When it's convenient for BJP, it's One Nation, when it's not, it's different states and different people. Heights of hypocrisy," he added.

Adityanath had on Monday said that the state government will provide social security and insurance to labourers and no state can take manpower from Uttar Pradesh without his government's permission.

"If any state wants manpower, they cannot take our people from the state without our permission as there were reports of misbehaviour with them in other states. We are taking full responsibility for labourers' social security. We will provide every kind of security to them including insurance. Wherever they will go, we will always stand by them," Yogi said.

The Chief Minister said that skill mapping is being done in Uttar Pradesh and a commission will be set up for labourers to ensure employment for them.

On Sunday, Adityanath had ordered the formation of a 'Migration Commission' for the purpose of providing the workers, who have returned to the state during the lockdown phase, with employment suited to their skills.

Bengaluru, Jan 8: The Karnataka government on Tuesday decided to adopt a no-fail approach for Class 7 examinations for government and private schools following the state syllabus.

The report card of a student doesn’t carry ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ remark, but points to his or her strengths and weaknesses in each subject in the exams, which will now be called Common Evaluation Exam.

The quality cell of the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (which conducts SSLC exams) will prepare question papers, which will be evaluated at the district level by government and private schoolteachers. The Class 7 exams will be held in March.

The Common Evaluation Exam follows the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) currently practised under the Right to Education Act. “The formative and summative assessments (tests, projects and quizzes) will be held as usual,”KG Jagadeesha, commissioner of public instruction, said.

Edu dept to launch helpline by March

For the March exam, summative assessment 2 will be held with half the syllabus. Other modalities (exam duration and total marks) will be announced next week,” said KG Jagadeesha. The CCE system will continue for classes 8 and 9. The government hopes the exam and subsequent interventions in classes 8 and 9 will boost students’ confidence for crucial board examinations.

Minister S Suresh Kumar said, “More than an exam, it’s an evaluation of a child’s knowledge. The Belagavi division has done something similar. The Kalaburagi zone found mathematics and science were areas of concern; language was an issue in Urdumedium schools.” The minister said zilla panchayat CEOs have observed that intervention should start from class 8. “Keeping this in mind, we’ve started necessary preparation for class 7 exam ,” he added.

The education department will start a helpline by March for students, teachers, school managements and educationists to 11 raise problems on day-to-day issues.
