Yettinahole project a blunder; it can't quench the thirst of parched districts'

Bengaluru, Sep 29: A new study conducted by a team of the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru concluded that the Rs 13,000-crore Yettinahole diversion project doesn't hold much water to quench the thirst of the parched districts of Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru and Bengaluru Rural.

Yettinahole

Headed by TV Ramachandra and comprising of experts like Barat Aithal and S Vinay, the study team after visiting spots and using the latest technology, including remote sensors, found that Yettinahole can generate only 9.5 tmcft of water against 24 tmcft as claimed by the state government which is awaiting environmental clearance to go ahead with project. The team has called the project as an "an ecological blunder".

The study, Environment Flow Assessment in a Lotic Ecosystem of Central Western Ghat, was published in international journal Hydrology Current Research. The Karnataka government, some experts and leaders seeking project implementation had slammed its earlier findings saying it lacked conviction.

The government has already spent Rs 1,690 crore for the project and set up a dedicated authority to oversee its implementation. The project is now temporarily halted following a green bench order besides widespread protests in the coastal belt as the Yettinahole project aims at diverting 24.01 tmcft of water from Nethravathi's tributaries.

The report highlights alterations in the catchment integrity (land cover) or water diversions would result in variation in the natural flow, affecting the biodiversity of the riparian and aquatic habitats, and more importantly, people's livelihood dependent on fishing in the downstream.

The sustainable option to meet water requirements in arid regions, the study points out, would be to rejuvenate existing lakes and ponds, reuse treated waste water, recharge groundwater resources, plant native species of plants in the catchment areas and implement soil and water conservation through microwatershed approaches.

Sources in the water resources department, however, said they will not give much credence to the report but wait for the one by an expert committee set up by the government. On June 9, 2016, the government formed a panel under the chairmanship of Central Water Commission former chairman A K Bajaj. "The committee met just once but nothing much has happened after that. I partly endorse the views of the fresh report prepared by IISc scientists that Yettinahole cannot generate 24 tmcft of water and it greatly affects the ecology,'' said environmentalist Yellappa Reddy.

Assan, Feb 9: Coming down heavily on Amit Shah, JDS supremo HD Deve Gowda said that the Union Home Minister is dreaming of a Hindu nation. Addressing the crowd at an anti-CAA/NRC rally in Hassan, he said that the Home Minister has forgotten that India is a secular, multi-lingual country.

“Shah cannot make India into a Hindu nation. People should come forward and oppose the Acts in the interest of peace and welfare of the nation,” the former PM said, urging secular leaders to unite and fight against the undemocratic policies put forth by the Centre.

“Only secular forces can protect minorities by taking to the streets,” he said. Talking about the controversy around former Union minister Anant Kumar Hegde’s statements, Gowda said BJP leaders are airing anti-national comments, which is disturbing peace. “Muslims, Christians and Hindus should unite to fight against the BJP’s unilateral decisions.”

Bengaluru, Mar 13: This year, schoolchildren will have a longer summer vacation starting early, thanks to the new coronavirus onslaught. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Suresh Kumar on Thursday announced that schools in Bengaluru Urban and Rural districts will be closed for vacation from Friday.

Classes from LKG to sixth standard will closed for vacations till the schools reopen in June, while students of classes 7-9 will have ‘study holidays’ until their examinations commence (as scheduled by their respective schools). Their summer vacations will begin with the completion of their examinations.

Class 10 students will have their examinations according to the dates scheduled earlier.

“Let us not treat this as a panic reaction or something to cause a scare. This measure is taken as a precaution. A lot of parents were worried about their children. We have already announced the closure of schools from nursery to sixth standards. Now, we are declaring official holidays upto sixth standard. Students of standards 1-6 will all be promoted based on their formative assessment,” said Kumar adding, “no student will be detained in those classes.”

However, state syllabus schools have to finish their examinations before March 23”, Public Instruction Commissioner KG Jagadeesh said.Just a couple of papers of the PU examinations are left after which their holidays will begin.

Exam timetable not changed

Miscreants are spreading rumours that SSLC examination dates are changed because of the new coronavirus outbreak. However, Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board director V Sumangala categorically said the examinations will be held from March 27  to April 9 as scheduled earlier.

Abu Dhabi-based NMC Healthcare has reportedly received bids to sell its distribution unit and will soon be selling it to different parties.

The development comes over three months after NMC Healthcare’s founder and then-chairman B R Shetty stepped down amid allegations of massive fraud.

The company, which recently laid off hundreds of workers, is offloading stake in the subsidiary as it is considered non-core and requires substantially high working capital to run the operations. In addition, this stake sale will help the company pay off some of its debt

"There are parties who have strong interest in the distribution business. NMC will be offloading the unit soon and that also to different parties," a source said.

"The company is in the process of exploring options for NMC Trading, the group's distribution business, which it has determined to be non-core and requiring substantial levels of working capital. The process should not materially adversely impact distributors' activities, nor NMC Trading's customers," an NMC Healthcare spokeswoman said.

The UK-court has appointed Alvarez & Marsal as administrator to oversee the operations of the debt-ridden hospital operator. The healthcare firm has been caught in a whirlpool of $6.6 billion debt while its senior former high management team is under investigation for financial irregularities.

The UAE Central Bank has direct local banks to freeze all bank accounts of NMC founder BR Shetty and his family members as well as accounts of those companies where he has a stake. The Central Bank move is subsequent to a criminal complaint filed by Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, which has the largest exposure to NMC Healthcare, amounting Dh3 billion.

As the company faces financial difficulties, Reuters reported that NMC Health delayed May staff salaries and now expects to complete making payments by the first week of June.

The spokeswoman said: "The company has been in regular dialogue with its creditor constituencies through various creditor committees, including the direct bank lenders to its NMC Trading businesses."
