Bengaluru, Oct 26: Elated by a CBI court verdict acquitting him in a graft case, former Karnataka Chief Minister and state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa today said he stands vindicated.

"I am happy that false allegations and politically motivated charges have been dismissed," the Karnataka BJP strongman told reporters, with the judicial pronouncement coming as a big political boost to him.

Yeddyurappa, appointed Karnataka BJP President in April this year to revive the party's fortunes, said the verdict had also given him a "new fillip" to bring the party back to power in the state, slated to go for assembly elections in 2018.

"Satyameva Jayathe. Justice is done. I stand vindicated," said Yeddyurappa in a tweet soon after the special CBI court pronounced the verdict with enthusiastic BJP workers celebrating it by bursting crackers and hailing him in the city civil court complex.

Judge R B Dharmagouder of the CBI court acquitted Yeddyurappa, his two sons and son-in-law in the Rs 40 crore kickbacks case related to illegal mining, which had led to his exit as chief minister in 2011.

"I have got relief... lakhs of party workers are happy. I am very happy and satisfied," Yeddyurappa said, as the judgment brought a huge sense of relief to the Lingayat strongman who has been cleared of corruption in most of the cases but still faces several others in different courts.

Yeddyurappa, credited with guiding the party to form its first-ever government in the south in 2008, said, "This (the court verdict) has come as a great power for me to bring the BJP back to power in Karnataka..."

Lakhs of party workers were "relieved" by the judgement, which had also given him "great self confidence, he said.

Yeddyurappa's son B Y Raghavendra said "baseless" charges were made against their family with a "political motive."

Raghavendra, a member of the Assembly, said his family faced a "lot of pain" in the last five years but they have finally got justice which would help them further strengthen the party.

He said he was confident that BJP would come back to power in Karnataka under the leadership of Yeddyurappa.

New Delhi, Feb 24: India has deeply appreciated the Senegal government's decision to extradite fugitive gangster Ravi Poojary to India, official sources said on Sunday.

Facilitation of transit provided by the Government of France has also been acknowledged, they said.

Ravi Prakash Poojary, accused of committing a number of serious offences including murder and extortion in multiple jurisdictions, was extradited from Senegal on Saturday.

The probe agencies have persistently pursued the case for his extradition with the authorities in Senegal. India had made a request with Senegal for his extradition in early 2019, sources said.

Poojary was associated with gangster Chhota Rajan, but he also worked for fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Bengaluru, Jan 25: The local police will provide security for Sri Nijagunananda Swami and his Kittur Nishkal Mantapa Mutt following a letter containing a threat to his life that was received on Friday.

The letter, containing the names of 15 liberal thinkers and activists, was circulated widely on social media and shown on some Kannada TV channels. The letter is addressed to the seer, and it condemns his lectures where he speaks in favour of liberal values.

“The decision to eliminate you will be taken on January 21. You will be eliminated, along with 15 of your followers and people who think like you,” the letter said.

Among those threatened are Nidumamidi Channammalla Swami, Jnyana Prakash Swami, the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, actors Prakash Raj and Chetan Kumar, writer Chandrashekar Patil, Brinda Karat of the CPI(M) and writer K.S. Bhagavan.

It is not the first time that the seer is getting such threats. Two years ago, Belagavi Police had provided security to the seer following threats to his life. Last year, he got a phone call from a person from Shivamogga district. But the seer did not bother to complain.

This time, the district police will seek a written complaint from the seer. “We will assess the threat perception and the security levels. Adequate security will be provided,” the police said.

The seer is now camping in Jewargi in Kalaburagi district. “We have intimated the Kalaburagi Superintendent of Police of the need for immediate security arrangements. We will take steps to provide adequate security to him once he arrives in Belagavi district,” Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbaragi said.

Bengaluru, Mar 4: CM BS Yediyurappa may reconsider plans to hike taxes and curtail populist schemes in his budget on Thursday as the Centre released part of GST compensation it owes the state. Officials said the Centre released the first instalment of the bimonthly compensation for October-November amounting to Rs 2,013 crore.

"This is welcome relief as the government has been scrambling to mobilise funds," said BT Manohar, member of GST consultative committee, government of Karnataka. The second instalment of Rs 1,523 crore is also expected to be released soon.

The CM, in his seventh budget, is expected keep the focus firmly on farmers and give top priority to irrigation, agriculture and welfare schemes.

The irrigation sector is expected to land the lion's share with an allocation of at least Rs 25,000 crore, followed by agriculture. Former CM Kumaraswamy had allocated over Rs 17,000 crore for water resources.

The bulk of funds is likely to go to the Upper Krishna (UKP) and Upper Bhadra projects, as it will help backward Kalyana Karnataka and central Karnataka regions. The two are also significant political blocs. The government will also seek assistance from the Centre for the UKP project in the erstwhile Hyderabad-Karnataka region, which enjoys special status under the Constitution owing to its backwardness. Yediyurappa is also expected to spell out populist schemes for the poor.

Former CM HD Kumaraswamy had allocated Rs 17,212 crore in the previous budget for water resources and Yediyurappa is likely to go well beyond that figure. "Priority will be given to irrigation and farmers," Yediyurappa had said recently. "I am making efforts to present a budget within the financial constraints."

he amounts are released once every two months, but the Centre had fallen behind on payments. PX

"There are indications that another payment will be made."

The state's optimism stems from the fact that the Centre's GST collection crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore-mark for four successive months till February.

However, the CM could still hike tax rates marginally. At a pre-budget meet on resource mobilisation where Yediyurappa is learnt to have expressed willingness to borrow funds, officials from the finance department advocated raising tax rates instead.
