Protests erupt across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi against arrest of PFI leader

Mangaluru/Udupi, Nov 3: The arrest of Popular Front of India's Bengaluru district unit president Hashim Sharif has triggered protests across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Nearly 200 PFI activists gathered in front of the office of deputy commissioner in Mangaluru to denounce the alleged politicisation of the coldblooded murder of RSS activist Rudresh and arrest of Mr Sharif.

PFI Udupi district committee held a protest in front of clock tower near service bus stand in Udupi. Protest meets were also held in Puttur, B C Road and other parts of coastal Karnataka.

The protesters denied their organisation's role in the October 16 murder case and called the arrest of their leader a political conspiracy.

They accused the police of bowing down to the pressure of Sangh Parivar, which had earlier said that it would seek ban on PFI if its involved in the murder case was confirmed.

In a press release issued here, the PFI said that this was not the first time the Sangh Parivar targeting the organisation. “In the part to PFI had faced similar baseless allegations and media too had waged a hate campaign against PFI. However, their allegations proved to be false so far,” it said.

“The Sangh Parivar and media had blamed PFI for the murder of Manjunath in Shivamogga and Harish Poojary in Bantwal. However, later it was proved that Manjunath was murdered in a property row and Poojary was murdered by Bajrang Dal leader Bhuvit Shetty,” the release said.

“In Rudresh murder case too, the Sangh Parivar is trying to target PFI since the beginning. The police have already arrested four persons who have no connections with the organisation. Now, the police picked up a PFI leader just to appease the Sangh Parivar,” it said demanding the immediate release of Mr Sharif.

Puttur, Apr 6: A person reportedly has been booked for allegedly posting derogatory remarks against minority community on social media platforms.

The accused is reported to be a resident of Belandur village of Puttur Taluk.
The case has been registered at Bellare Police Station.

According to the reports, Kusumadhara had posted derogatory remarks about the faith and minority community. A complaint in this regard was filed by Savanur SDPI member Mohammed Saheer at Bellare Police Station, adding that his remarks in the post would create divide and communal disturbance in the society.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Mangaluru, Feb 21: The local units of Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal today staged a protest in the city against Amulya Leona, who raised pro-Pakistan slogans yesterday in Bangaluru.

Amulya is the daughter of Wazi Noronha, a former leader of minority of wing of BJP in Koppa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district. He had worked in support of hardline BJP leader and Udupi-Chickmagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, and D N Jeevaraj, who had represented Sringeri constituency last time.

The 19-year-old B.A. student was arrested on sedition charge after she raised pro-Pakistan slogans to embarrass the organisers of a peaceful protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Bengaluru.

Demanding stringent action against Amulya, a group of activist of VHP and Bajrang Dal staged protest at Kadri Mallikatte Circle in the city. Speaking on the occasion, M B Puranik and Sharan Pumpwell demanded NIA probe into the incident.
