Even though the incident occurred on November 5, the student's mother Prema M lodged the complaint at Mangaluru Rural Police Station only on Friday.

In her complaint, Prema, has claimed that her son was hit with a cable wire for having failed to do his homework. She also accused the principal of deliberately insulting their caste. She also stated that the boy was asked to join a Kannada medium school, if he could not cope with English.

Fr Monis said that some miscreants who are not happy with him created thisdrama'. “I have been looking into a land dispute involving the church. Some people are not happy about this. They have used the student as a bait, and registered a fake complaint," he claimed.

He said that the student had been studying at a Kannada medium school earlier. "We admitted into the English medium school, free of cost, since he had a good academic record. However, he couldn't cope with the change in the medium of instruction. He also came late to class often," he said.

Fr Vishal pointed out that the school authorities had also counselled the boy on many occasions, when he had been absent for more than 15 days. "He was also not attending to his school work. When I spoke to him in this regard, he told me that he wanted to return to Kannada medium. So, I asked to seek admission at a Kannada medium school, which was close," he added.

It has been 33 years since the night of 22 May, 1987 when nearly 50 Muslim men from Hashimpura, a settlement in Meerut were rounded up and packed into the rear of a truck of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), an armed police of Uttar Pradesh. It was the blessed month of Ramadan and all the Muslims were fasting.

That night 42 of those on board the truck were killed in two massacres in neighbouring Ghaziabad district. One along the Upper Ganga canal near Muradnagar, the other along the Hindon canal in Makanpur, on the border with Delhi.

The cops had returned home after dumping the dead bodies into the canal. A few days later, the dead bodies were found floating in the canal and a case of murder was registered.

Vir Bahadur Singh was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister of India when this incident took place.

Not much has changed for the survivors and the relatives of the victims even today. The wounds are still fresh. Hashimpura remains devoid of basic municipal amenities, the erring silence on the narrow lanes of the locality amid the activities of a daily life speaks of the horror of the fateful day in 1987.

The massacre was the result of one among the many outcomes of the decision taken by the Rajiv Gandhi government to open the locks of Babri Masjid. After a month of rioting, the situation was tense in various parts of Meerut, and a lot spilled over in the nearby areas.

Mangaluru, June 10: Former minister and Mangaluru MLA U T Khader has hit out at the Karnataka government for what he opined that it is misusing the Epidemic Diseases Act to target opposition parties.

The statement comes in the backdrop of state government’s move to scuttle oath taking ceremony of KPCC president designate D K Shivakumar.

Asserting that the oath taking will be a grand affair, Mr Khader said that Congress will not be browbeaten by the tactics of the BJP.

Citing the blatant violation of all norms laid down under the Act by minister for health B R Sriramulu at Chitradurga earlier this month, Khader told reporters that the BJP is using the Act for its narrow political gains.

“KPCC has twice deferred swearing in ceremony of Shivakumar after being given the oral go ahead,” Khader claimed, adding the state government must explain to people the issue it has with the Congress organising this function.

Referring to the back-to-back virtual political rallies – one for Bihar and the other for Odisha – on Sunday and Monday that union home minister Amit Shah conducted, Khader wondered if the Act did not apply to the BJP leadership.
