Mangaluru, Nov 22: Thousands of Muslims from different parts of undivided Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday gathered at Nehru Maidan in the heart of Mangaluru city pledging to uphold Muslim Personal Law and to unitedly oppose the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led-Union Government's attempt to interfere in Islamic Shariah.

All the speakers at theShariah Protection Conference' organised by the Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi exhorted the Muslim community to resist any move to amend India's Muslim Personal Law that is based on the tenets of Shariah.

Inaugurating the conference, B K Abdul Khader Musliyar Khasimi, chief of Bambrana Juma Masjid, said Islamic Shariah is timeless and nobody would be allowed to dabble in its basic tenets.

“Islamic Shariah is built on the edifice of the Holy Qur'an, Prophet's Sunnah and the perception and perspectives commonly shared by scholars all over the world. It is the decree of Allah, the Almighty. No government or system can change or alter it. It is unalterable, perennial and fit to survive all the time and it will withstand the challenges of all ages,” he said.

"Muslim community has opposed strongly when the idea of Uniform Civil Code was mooted 30 years ago. It is anti-Islamic and impractical in India, where people with various faiths and religions co-exist. Moreover, it will escalate problems in the country," he said.

"It is an irony that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen on protection of rights of Muslim women, but he has failed to protect his wife. Quran gave equal rights to women in their ancestral property. It is unacceptable to agree the decisions taken by those who do not have knowledge on Islam, Quran and Sharia Law. We have clergies to discuss about Sharia Law and talaq. Let the government concentrate on administration," Khasimi said.

"Talaq is explained very clearly in Sharia Law. It is not uttered on a single day. There are several steps to be followed before triple talaq is completed. There are opportunities for couple to reunite even after first and second talaq. Divorce as per triple talaq becomes valid only when all the steps fail to reunite the couple," he explained.

Muhammed Kunhi, a representative of Jamat-e-Islami Hind said debate on triple talaq and uniform civil code is irrelevant when the nation has several other major issues to be sorted out. He pointed out that Ram Jethmalani, who was the law minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, had rejected Uniform Civil Code as non-practical move.

"Conduct a survey to ascertain the actual number of Muslim women who suffered due to triple talaq. In fact talaq is a blessing when divorce becomes necessary for couple," he added.

“The situation is such that fascist- minded people are out to dictate terms on trivial issues apart from interfering in the administration, arts and literature in the country. The attempts to strengthen multicultural society are being construed as an offence,” he said. Kunhi also called it as the nefarious intention of members of the Sangh Parivar, who are enforcing their political agenda.

Abdul Azeez Darimi from Karnataka Samastha Mushavara, said Muslims are united to protect Sharia Law in India. "Sharia Law is not against the Indian Constitution. Neither Parliament nor courts have the right to deny the fundamental rights under Indian Constitution. Hence, it is not possible for the government to introduce Uniform Civil Code in India, where over 6,000 castes and sub-castes exist. Sharia Law is not against non-Muslims," he added.

Muslim Central Committee president K S Mohammed Masood presided.

REMINDER OF THE DAY
When the foolish one speaks, do not reply to him, for better than a response (to him) is silence, and if you speak to him you have aided him, and if you left him (with no reply) in extreme sadness he dies.
- Imam Ash-Shaafi'ee (ra)
\And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace\"

Dear Brother Naren Kotian,

You have been commenting on this website for so many years now. Apart from a few readers responding to you, have you seen this make any change in beliefs that millions firmly follow? Ever wondered why?

Let me tell you why. You see Brother Naren , you aren't born without a reason. There is a reason why you are created. You are nothing but a 'number of days' . As each day passes , you approach something that no body could deny ie \DEATH\". All rich/poor/powerful/rulers everyone is dead now. Of which some names we know and billions we don't.
Listen to me carefully now. This could be a turning point for you and rethink your own opinions.

The Creator whom you call Brahma, Has created you to worship Him. He will call you back on the Judgement Day. He will hold you accountable for all your good deeds/bad deeds. He will ask you if you have fulfilled the duties He commanded you to do. He will then reward you with Paradise for you can live eternally/ punish you in Fire.

If this message looks strange, please read all religious Scriptures. Every religious Scripture has these things in common:
1. One God 2. Life is to Worship Him Alone 3. Judgement Day.
As a well wisher , I would wish that Brahma whom Muslims call Allah (Arabic), give you guidance and grant you Paradise.
Please don't hesitate to buy the Last Book from Brahma ie the Quran. It is available in Kannada translation in Mangalore. Have a great day Brother Naren."

Excellent gathering. Nice to see all the ulemas and leaders of different groups who have come under one platform to oppose the interference of the government. This is highly laudable of the Muslim Central committee President along with all the office bearers and members who worked relentlessly to get everyone on board. A gathering of 50000 people is hugely commendable and hope we Muslim brothers will always gather to oppose any decision which is against our Sharia and also unite against terrorism and come together to help our brother and sisters in distress. India is our country and no one can tell us to leave our country as we will not and shall unite always as we have shown yesterday. I had sometime back read in an article what was the Central committee doing etc etc. This is a very big achievement by them Kudos to them and I hope we all unite and be united.

If you go back the history In 1974 Congress did the Nasbandi and Turkman gate scandal particularly control the Muslim population ended up with Emergency and thrown the Regime of Congress out of power and again it tried in 1985 Shah Banu case and failed keep the power at Center and now the Shang Pariwar ( BJP+) back again with same old agenda with new theory to demolish Muslim personal Law but these major political power house forget that once it touched the issue of Muslims either Sharia law or Babri Masjid the result is ended up with Musilm Unity. So the time is back again to show the unity .. Jai Hind Jai Muslim

Dubai, May 5: Tickets on repatriation flights from UAE to India, which start on May 7, could be costlier than regular airfare, and adding to the financial woes of those flying back. Nearly 200,000 Indians in the UAE have registered on the website seeking to return home.

“A one-way repatriation ticket to Delhi will cost approximately Dh1,400-Dh1,650 - this would earlier have cost between Dh600-Dh700 [during these months],” said Jamal Abdulnazar, CEO of Cozmo Travel. “A one-way repatriation flight ticket to Kerala would cost approximately Dh1,900-Dh2,300.”

This can be quite a burden, as a majority of those taking these flights have either lost their jobs or are sending back their families because of uncertainty on the work front. To now have to pay airfare that is nearly on par with those during peak summer months is quite a blow.

Sources said that officials in Indian diplomatic missions have already initiated calls to some expats, telling them about likely ticket fares and enquiring about their willingness to travel.

Although many believed repatriation would be government-sponsored, Indian authorities have clarified that customers would have to pay for the tickets themselves. Those who thought they were entitled to free repatriation might back out of travel plans for now.

Fact of life

But aviation and travel industry sources say higher rates cannot be escaped since social distancing norms have to be strictly enforced at all times. That would limit the number of passengers on each of these flights.

“One airline can carry only limited passengers - therefore, multiple airlines are likely to get the approval to operate repatriation flights,” said Abdulnazar. “Also, airports will have to maintain safe distance for passengers to queue up at immigration and security counters.

“Therefore, it is recommended that multiple carriers fly into multiple Indian airports for repatriation to be expedited.”

The Indian authorities, so far, have not taken the easy decision to get its private domestic airlines into the rescue act. Gulf News tried speaking to the leading players, but they declined to provide any official statements. So far, only Air India, the national airline, has been commissioned to operate the flights.

Air India finds itself in the driver's seat when it comes to operating India's repatriation flights. To date, there is no confirmation India's private airlines will be allowed to join in.

UAE carriers ready to help out

UAE’s Emirates airline, Etihad, flydubai and Air Arabia are likely to also operate repatriation flights to India after Air India implements the first phase of services.

“We are fully supporting governments and authorities across the flydubai network with their repatriation efforts, helping them to make arrangements for their citizens to return home,” said a flydubai spokesperson.

“We will announce repatriation flights as and when they are confirmed, recognising this is an evolving situation whilst the flight restrictions remain in place.”

An AirArabia spokesperson said the airline is ready to operate repatriation flights when the government tells them to.

Travel agencies likely to benefit

Apart from operating non-scheduled commercial flights, the Indian government is also deploying naval ships to bring expat Indians back. Sources claim the ships are to ferry passengers who cannot afford the repatriation airfares.

Even then, considering the sheer numbers who will want to get on the flights, travel agencies are likely to see a surge in bookings since airline websites alone may not cope with the demand set off in such a short span.

Learn from Gulf governments

In instances when they carried out their own repatriation flights, some GCC governments paid the ticket fares to fly in their citizens. Those citizens who did not have the ready funds could approach their diplomatic mission and aid would be given on a case-to-case basis.

Should Indians wait for normal services to resume?

Industry sources say that those Indians wanting to fly back and cannot afford the repatriation flights should wait for full services to resume once the COVID-19 pandemic settles.

But can those who lost their jobs or seen steep salary cuts stay on without adding to their costs? And is there any guarantee that when flight services resume, ticket rates would be lower than on the repatriation trips.

As such, normal travel is expected to pick up only after the repatriation exercise to several countries is completed. UAE-based travel agencies are not seeing any bookings for summer, which is traditionally the peak holiday season.

“Majority want to stay put unless full confidence is restored,” said Abdulnazar. “I expect full normalcy to be restored not until March 2021.

“People have also taken a hit to their income. Without disposable income, you will curtail your travel.”

What constitutes normalcy?

Airfares are expected to remain high, given the need to keep the middle seats empty to practise safe distance onboard.

“We expect holiday travel to resume by October or November - but, the travel sentiment will not go back to pre-COVID-19 levels anytime soon,” said Manvendra Roy, Vice-President – Commercial at holidayme, an online travel agency. “The need to keep the middle seat vacant will add 30-40 per cent pricing pressure per seat from an airline perspective.

“This will make holidays more expensive.”

As for business travel, it will take some time to recover. Corporate staff are now used to getting work done via conference calls. “Companies will also curtail their travel expenditure since their income has taken a hit,” said Abdulnazar.
