Mangaluru: Budding businessman commits suicide

Suicide1Mangaluru, Nov 27: A city-based budding businessman has committed suicide at his residence under mysterious circumstances.

The body of Harish Rao was found hanging in his house located near Nagakannika temple at Derebail Konchadi, here on Sunday.

Hailed from Kundapur, 45-year-old Rao was growing as businessman in Mangaluru.

He is survived by his wife Priya, who is a news anchor in Namma Kudla local TV channel, and two children.

A case has been registered. The police are trying to find out what led Rao to end his life.

Mangaluru, May 5: As many as 7,119 labourers, who were stranded in Dakshina Kannada district, were sent to their native places in buses operated by KSRTC’s Mangaluru and Puttur divisions.

After the announcement of lockdown, the stranded labourers were provided shelter in various halls, Town Hall and government hostels in the district.

The stranded labourers from Kuloor, Panjimogaru, Panambur, Baikampady, Yeyyadi, Mulki, Ullal, Bunder, Hoige Bazar and from taluk centres, who wished to take up farming activities in their villages, were sent back in KSRTC and private buses. As many as 266 buses were engaged for ferrying the labourers.

The labourers underwent health check-up prior to their departure to their native villages, Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said.

Bengaluru, May 6: The second day of liquor sales in Karnataka on Tuesday after easing of lockdown curbs saw a nearly five-fold jump in earnings, with Rs 197 crore worth spirits being sold.

According to top Excise Department officials, 4.21 lakh cases of Indian-made liquor, comprising 36.37 lakh litres, worth Rs 182 crore and 7.02 lakh litres of beer in 0.90 lakh cases worth Rs 15 crore was sold on Tuesday.

On Monday, when sales resumed in the state, Rs 45 crore worth liquor was sold.

"We had never expected such a record sale. It's unprecedented," an Excise official who did not wish to be named said.

Liquor sales had resumed in Karnataka on Monday after a 41 day gap following the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mangaluru, Apr 6: Agricultural produce vendors have decided to hold an indefinite strike from Monday here in city's Central Market.
 
This move comes in response to district administration’s order asking them to shift to the APMC yard at Baikampady and not heeding to their appeal to allow them to operate from the Market and other areas in the city.
 
The district administration has decided to shift the vendors in order to prevent crowding in the market and maintain social distancing norms.
