Pope Francis celebrates Christmas Eve Mass after year of peace pleas

Vatican City, Dec 25: Pope Francis has celebrated Christmas Eve Mass in a packed St Peter's Basilica, rounding out a year marked by his pleas for the world to better protect innocents caught up in wars, migrations and abject poverty.

As the Sistine Chapel choir sang "Gloria" and the basilica's bells rang out across Rome, Francis yesterday processed to the altar behind cardinals draped in golden vestments for the service celebrating the birth of Jesus.

The late night Mass was the first major event of the Christmas season, followed by Francis' noon Urbi et Orbi (To the city and the world) blessing on Christmas Day.

Francis has spent much of 2016 bemoaning the Islamic extremist violence that has driven Christians from Mideast communities that date to the time of Christ. He has demanded Europe in particular do more to welcome refugees, saying Jesus himself was a migrant who deserved more than being born in a manger. And he has denounced the wasteful ways of the wealthy when children and the poor die of hunger every day.

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Normal life is slowly returning to normal across Karnataka with the state government further easing the restrictions by throwing open places of worship, hotels, malls for the public.

Despite these places being opened after a gap of more than two months, the places wore a deserted look as the people are and cautious and not ready to take of risk of venturing out amid the ongoing Corona threat.

"Business is not as heavy as expected though it was allowed after a gap of almost three months. You can see for yourself the crowd, it is not what it should have been in a commercial area like this prior to the imposition of lockdown. However, hope it will improve", a Cloth merchant B Ramesh told UNI when asked for his reaction.

Bengaluru, Jul 17: A total of 3,693 new COVID-19 positive cases and 115 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Friday, said the state health department.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the state is presently at 55,115, including 33,205 active cases. While there are 20,757 recoveries, the death toll stands at 1,147.

With the highest single-day spike of 34,956 cases and 687 deaths, India's COVID-19 positive cases crossed the 10 lakh mark on Friday, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The total positive cases stand at 10,03,832 including 3,42,473 active cases, 6,35,757 cured/discharged/migrated and 25,602 deaths, according to the ministry.

Udupi, Jan 5: The district administration has identified 460 beneficiaries who will be allotted flats at Herga under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, informed MLA Raghupati Bhat.

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday he said the Udupi Municipal Council will construct the apartments in the 8.22 acres of land earmarked for the purpose at Herga. The flats will be ready before April 2021.
