Moms of Mangalore: A network for social change

Mangaluru, Feb 3: At a time when social networking sites and groups are being used for frivolous activities, Moms of Mangalore (MOM) has showed the people how such facilities can be utilized for noble causes.

Started over a year ago, Moms of Mangalore (MOM) closed Facebook group has brought around 18 thousand mothers cutting across religious and social barriers together under one platform to make a change in the lives of people in the region.

Over the last two months, the inspiring mothers of this group, in association with the PG Dept of Social Work, St Aloysious College - Mangaluru, has been extensively involved in a collection drive to provide support to the less fortunate. In the process they were able to help over 175 children and adults from the lesser privileged areas around Mangaluru, Sirsi and Shimoga with clothes and toys.

The communities included in the collection drive were from various parts of Mangaluru and Shimoga: Loyola Vikas Kendra, Mundgod, Sirsi; Prashanth Nivas; Snehasadan Centre; Ashok Nagar Community; Kasaba Bengre Community; Ullal Community; Needy Children of few of the Anganwadis; Government School Children of Bengre School; Nightingale Happy Home for the Aged, Shimoga; Samvedana Centre, Pumpwell.

This is just one of the several initiatives that the group has started. From their social get together to honour mothers, to efforts in social causes like Chennai relief fund, collection drive for the kids with special needs, collection drive for the less fortunate to name a few, this group in just over a year's time, has highlighted what the mothers in particular, of the region are capable of.

MOM is a non profit, non religious and non political group. As a part of the group's initiative, they have a panel of doctors who are selflessly responding to queries from the members. Children psychologists, counsellors, nutritionists, health support groups, advocates, lactation specialist, contests, mass child immunization reminders, parenting tips, women health tips published by doctors, Mompreneur Mondays (forum for Mothers to display their entrepreneurial skills via posts on their businesses) are some other initiatives of the group.

Bengaluru, Jul 17: The Doctors at Fortis Hospital, here on Friday, successfully treated a 97-year-old patient who suffered an embolic stroke due to calcified stenosis (narrowing of an artery resulting in restriction of blood flow).

In a release, the Hospital authorities stated that the team of doctors led by Dr Rajpal Singh, Director and Interventional Cardiologist, Fortis Hospital, Bangalore successfully conducted Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS) to increase the blood flow in the blocked areas which had resulted in stroke following stringent safety protocols and ensuring proper segregation of COVID and Non-COVID patients at the hospital.

Carotid arteries serve as the main channels which supply the blood flow to the brain and facial structures. Any significant narrowing in these arteries can cause a brain stroke, a mini-stroke, headache, and neurological symptoms.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Bengaluru Jul 29: There will be a centralised system in place in Karnataka to classify asymptomatic, symptomatic and mild symptomatic persons and recommend treatment based on the severity of the cases, said Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar on Tuesday here.

"Various existing apps related to COVID-19 will be brought under one platform to get real-time information which will assist in strategising allocation of hospitals/beds to the needy. This will probably remove the delay in bed allocation and treatment which is being faced now. The patients will get all information in one phone call," Dr Sudhakar said.

Sudhakar spoke with a team of experts from the government and Infosys.

Referring to a company by name Step 1, which is providing such services in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh, the Minister said that a similar system will be implemented in the state as well.

"This company is having a team of doctors and nurses which is guiding the people whether they need hospital treatment or home isolation after they are tested positive for COVID-19. More than 70 per cent of the positive cases are being asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and are advised to go for home isolation," the minister said.

"The load on the hospitals is reduced and severe cases can be administered proper treatment. Infosys co-ordinates with the government to provide technical support for this system," Dr Sudhakar added.

Earlier during the day, the minister held a video conference with the heads of private medical colleges to review COVID preparedness.
The government has already passed guidelines to allocate 50 per cent of hospital beds for COVID patients.
