Udupi, Feb 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled his first visit to south Indian city of Udupi and sought the blessings of Pejawar Mutt seer Vishwesha Thirtha swami on Sunday.

The PM was addressing the gathering at 700th Madhwa jayanthi celebrations here, through video conferencing.

Prior to Mr Modi's address Pejawar seer said that he was not satisfied with the PM addressing the programme via video conference. “During my second Paryaya, you (Modi) had visited Udupi as a volunteer. You are like Arjuna working for the welfare of the country and I invite you to visit Udupi once,” the seer said.

In response, Mr Modi said, “I would have been happy visiting Udupi and accepting your blessings.” He said he had visited Udupi several times in the past. The Bharatiya Jan Sangh was in power in Udupi Town Municipal Council (TMC) four decades ago. In fact, Udupi TMC has the credit of banning night soil carrying system way back in 1968. Udupi had also won clean city award in 1984 and 1989.

Lauding the 88-year-old Pejawar seer, the PM said that the seer had taken “sanyasa” at the young age of eight years. For the last 80 years, he had been working for strengthening the country.

He had travelled across the country and had put in efforts for removing illiteracy and casteism and for protection of cows. “It is due to his good deeds that the seer has got the good fortune of the fifth Paryaya. I salute him,” he said.

He said that whenever India faced challenges and difficulties, great persons and saints were born to guide the country to the path of progress. “Madhwacharya is one of the greatest saints and philosphers of India,” he said.

Madhwacharya had shown a new direction to society. “No work is inferior and Madhwacharya had propogated that a selfless work is a service to the God,” said the prime minister. Stating that Madhwacharya had opposed animal sacrifice during his time, Modi said that it was in the sacred land of Udupi he wrote “Geethabhashya.”

For bringing in reforms in society, the great saints of the land had included devotion as a part of their propagation. The Bhakthi movement which started with Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Madhwacharya was continued by Sant Kabeer, Meerabai, Ramananda throughout the country.

Quoting saints, the prime minister said that while cleansing other's hand, one's own hand should also be clean. Similarly, a campaign against corruption and black money is initiated in the country, he added.

Through Anubhava Mantapa, Basaveshwara had given first Parliament to the country. “A life will light only through selfless service. When selfish nature comes between social work and glorification of individual personalities it results in corruption,” he added.

Mangaluru, June 21: The first ever repatriation flight from Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Karnataka’s Mangaluru under Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) today brought home around 165 stranded passengers.

The IndiGo flight took off from Dammam International Airport at 11 a.m. (Saudi time) and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 6:30 p.m.

The stranded passengers included pregnant women, senior citizens and those who are in need of emergency medical treatment are on board.

The passengers were screened at the Airport before being despatched for institutional quarantine in special buses.

Even though a few charter flights arranged by a couple of NRI entrepreneurs have already repatriated hundreds of stranded people from Dammam to Mangaluru, the government of India had not operated any repatriation flight under VBM on this sector so far.

Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum (SKHF), an NGO which came into existence to help the stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia during covid-19 lockdown had been successful in persuading the government of India operate a flight on Dammam-Mangaluru sector under VBM.

SKHF has also set up an online portal for those who were in need of emergency repatriation. In today’s flight around 100 passengers have obtained seats through SKHF.

Bengaluru, Jun 29: The results of second pre-university and the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination results will be out by July last week and August first week, Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar said on Monday.

Instead of giving general promotion to the 10th and 12th standard students as the Central Board of Secondary Education and other states have done, the Karnataka government decided to hold the examination defying the coronavirus scare.

"We are trying to get the SSLC results out by the first week of August. The PUC results will be out in the last week of July," the minister told reporters in Bengaluru.

Amid reports of schools increasing the school fees ignoring the government's direction, the minister said he has got reports that 1,150 schools have increased their fees of which action has been taken against 450 schools.

"We have directed all the schools not to increase the fees in view of the coronavirus scare.

It is a peculiar year.Humanity says no one should increase fees.

We have set up a helpline. If we come across such practices, we will initiate action," Kumar said.

He said an officer has been entrusted to look into the complaints against schools.

Speaking about online classes for kindergarten students, the minister said such classes are not allowed.

The schools can hold talks with parents twice a week about grooming their children.

Kumar said a decision on opening kindergarten schools will be taken after July 5.

He, however, conceded that most parents are unwilling to send their children to school.

The government is gathering the opinion of parents based on which a decision would be taken, he added.

Regarding education to students from Class one to Class 10, Kumar said the Centre has given guidelines, which will be followed.

The state has formed an expert committee to recommend guidelines on education to children from Class I to Class six.

"Once the committee report comes, we will formulate regulations," Kumar added.
