Third AGM of heLPy held in Dammam

Dammam: heLPy Livelihood, a philanthropic organization of Indian expatriates, conducted its third annual general body meeting at Rose Restaurant in Dammam, Saudi Arabia on 06 Jan, 2017 after Ishaa prayer.

Master of the ceremony Br. Mohammed Riyaz opened the meeting with Islamic Greetings and invited the distinguished guests and its office bearers to the dais. The meeting commenced with the recitation of Holy Quran by Br. Shakir Mangalore who enlightened the importance of time in Islam and how to utilize and emphasized the audience to come forward and help the needy in the community for its betterment and gain rewards from Allah, the Almighty.

Vice President Br. Sameer Ahmed welcomed all the members and guests. He gave a brief explanation on heLPy’s journey and progress in 2016. He appreciated and thanked the committee of the term 2016 for their enormous support which had strengthened the Unit to lead in the direction of prosperity.

The annual report for 2016 was presented to attendees in a professional way by the General Secretary Br. Suneer Ahmed. He briefed about heLPy to the audience, which literally represents an association meant for the welfare of less privileged brothers & sisters of the society. He further briefed the activities and the achievements of heLPy in 2016. His reports highlighted that the first and foremost priority in heLPy is given to all round development of the less privileged families in the society.

The success story of heLPy has to be communicated. Alhamdhulillah every penny contributed by heLPy members, supporters and well-wisher are spent on a great way which can benefit contributors in this life and hereafter. The best charity is to satisfy a hungry person, said Prophet Muhammad (SAS). He also said "No wealth (of a servant of Allah) is decreased because of charity." (Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 2247).

In 2016 heLPy provided ration to 17 families which was 5 families in 2015. Ration of INR 2000 and cash of INR 1000 is given to these beneficiaries every month. heLPy also reached Secunderabad in Telangana by adding a needy family. The Dua done by the beneficiaries when heLPy members visited their place was of immense pleasure and moral boosting. All the beneficiaries are satisfied by heLPy’s contributions. heLPy had 10 annual sponsors for the ration program in addition to several short term sponsors. Team heLPy’s continuous follow up with its dedicated coordinators and distributors in India have made this program a huge success.

The families that heLPy is taking care of are not only getting ration but also education to their children as detailed earlier and moral support from heLPy’s dedicated members.

During the term 2016, heLPy had conducted 12 monthly meetings and several special meetings to discuss various aspects for the betterment of the community.

For the 3rd time in heLPy’s history Treasurer Br. Abdul Khader Shaheer presented the annual financial reports of heLPy for the Year 2016 in details.

Br Mohidin Bava presented an Accolade Ceremonial further in a neat and auspicious way. As he said in addition to Almighty’s blessing, with all full pledged support from office bearers, executive members, members, supporters and well-wishers he was able to justify the role as Presidents for the given term. He explained the importance of unity within us and charity to assist the helpless and needy people of our community also polished the importance of charity works and its rewards we get for utilizing our time and effort in helping the helpless. The philanthropists and members who played a major role were honored for their contributions, dedication and excellent performance in 2016.

The existing committee was dissolved by the Office bearers.

Br. Mazhar was appointed as the election commissioner. He professionally continued the election process and 33 executive committee members including the following office bearers were selected for 2017 unanimously.

The elected President, Br. Mohidin Bava had addressed the gathering and thanked the committee for giving him the opportunity to lead the team in 2016 and selecting him again to lead the growing team and giving another opportunity to lead heLPy for the term 2017. He promised to maintain and try to take heLPy to a new stature by the grace of Almighty and with the continued support and cooperation from office bearers, executives, team members and well-wishers of heLPy.

A quiz competition was held by the event coordinator Br. Riyaz for the audience and children.

Vote of thanks was proposed by the MC Br Mohammed Riyaz and on behalf of heLPy had expressed the gratitude to all the members and guests for their kind presence and congratulated the New Committee for their success in accomplishing all the future assignments of heLPy.

Dinner was served at the end and the Annual General Body Meeting was dispersed with a Dua.

Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) Chaiman Dr Sam Pitroda held video conference with senior IOC office bearers across Middle Eastern countries on 14th April 2020 to review the impact of COVID-19 pandemic among Indians residing in the region. Almost all speakers appreciated the efforts initiated and  implemented by  respective governments to contain spread of the deadly virus as well as measures taken towards welfare of the people affected by the lockdown. 

IOC Presidents, Mohammed Mansour - Bahrain, Abdullah Manjeri - Saudi Arabia, Dr J Ratan kunar - Oman and Girish kumar - Qatar, highlighted the quality treatment of patients and finacial aid provided by governments and other authorities. Bahrain IOC president Mansour , also  apprised about the 'Food for Needy' drive in Association with KHK Heroes foundation, initiated by HH Sheikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa and quality treatments as well as financial aid to local and expat residents.

Anura Mathai, IOC  Global Event Coordinator, spoke about certain problems of Indians in the UAE. IOC Middle East Convener, Mansoor Palloor, emphasised and requested IOC Chairman to urge Indian government to arrange immediate repatriation of indians stranded in Gulf countries. AICC Secretary, Himanshu Vyas, IOC Secretary Dr Arathi Krishna, Dr Arshi Malik (Abha), Mohiuddin Sirajudeen (Jeddah), Advocate Joseph Palathara (Dammam) Prasad Kodru, Jayati Maitra Ziyad Ahmed (Qatar) and Khursheed Alam (Gen Secretary- Bahrain) also apprised the participants about various issues relevant to the pandemic and suggested further initiatives to be undertaken. 

Dr Sam Pitroda briefed about sustained and consolidated efforts by all IOC members  during this unprecedented situation facing the world and assured that he would convey IOC  concerns to the government and try his best to ensure all possible help is made available to all needy Indians.

Dr Soofi Anwar, Director Academics of University of Stirling RAK, UAE Campus, has achieved the prestigious professional recognition of Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) UK. He has achieved this milestone through the Stirling Framework for Evidencing Learning and Teaching Enhancement (SFELTE), the Continuing Professional Development Framework (CPD) for learning and teaching at University of Stirling, Scotland, UK. 

He was recognized for this achievement on recently concluded virtual Learning & Teaching Conference-2020 organized by University of Stirling Campus in UK.  He has secured his Ph.D. in Management from University of Azteca, Mexico.

Dr. Soofi Anwar has over 20 years of experience in teaching and academic leadership at higher education level and has worked in leading universities in UAE, Bahrain and India. He was conferred the prestigious Middle East Education Leadership Award, as the Best Professor in Management-2018 in recognition of his academic excellence, exemplary leadership in higher education. Prior to his current role, he has worked on leadership position in Birla Institute of Technology Offshore Campus RAK.

He has completed his MBA from Dept. of Business Administration, Mangalore University in 1999 and his B. Com degree from Canara College Mangaluru.

He has published numerous research papers in management and in the area of teaching and learning in higher education in reputed academic journals and international conferences proceedings. He is a member of editorial board of two leading management journals and engaged in reviewing faculty research publications in the area of management and marketing. 

He is a son of Haji Abdul Khadar Kodijal and Mrs. Mariyamma from Konaje, Mangaluru.

Abu Dhabi: Yogish Prabhu K is the newly elected president of Abu Dhabi’s prestigious India Social & Cultural Centre (ISC) and he will serve for the period 2020-2021. ISC’s annual general body meeting and Election for 2020 were held on Thursday, February 27 and the election results of the election were announced during the early hours of Friday, February 28th morning.

In the keenly contested election, Yogish Prabhu emerged victorious. Humble origin and hailing from a small town of Karkala from Udupi district of Karnataka state has never deterred him from setting challenging goals. He belongs to a well-known Gouda Saraswat Brahmin family of K.V.Prabhu Coconut oil mill in Karkala. He is the eldest son of Late Rtn. Krishna Prabhu and Rtn. Bharati Prabhu.  His father and grandfather were freedom fighters who left a profound impression on him and their ideology “serving people is like worshiping God” (Jana seveye Janardhana seve) inspired and guided his life ever since. Prabhu has been a privilege member of ISC since 2003 and has been actively involved in ISC activities throughout. His relationship with ISC spans over 2 decades during which he has immensely contributed in many ways to ISC and the Indian community at large. A banker by profession, Yogish Prabhu is currently working as Vice President, Group Finance & Treasury, First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB).

With some new initiatives in his mind, Prabhu wants to creatively improve the quality of ISC’s services, its humanitarian impact as well as the diversity of its membership. His intentions are always to help everyone irrespective of caste, creed, religion, language or status. As a new elected President of ISC, Prabhu’s main objective is to strategically plan and implement his vision through his ABC 5 Year Plan i.e.,

A-    Accountability & Transparency,

B-    Build a Sound Financial Plan and

C-    Compassion & Affection for the needy

so that ISC is recognized not just in UAE, but worldwide as a mascot of the great Indian community.

Prabhu thinks “as individuals, we can do only so much but with the support of Elected ISC Committee members and all the ISC members together, there is no limit to what we can achieve, and in the process, we can truly transform the ISC”. He proudly says, “I have a strong treasury management experience in ISC as well as in the bank which we need now more than ever”.

With his dynamic leadership, sheer dedication and ambition, ISC will definitely be scaling new heights of glory and prestige in Abu Dhabi and beyond. His humble nature, leadership qualities coupled with his rich administrative experience will surely help boost ISC’s popularity and meet its challenging goals and can serve people in a better way and contribute to the Indian community at large.

Yogish Prabhu has been married for 28years. His wife Chethana Prabhu Kasaragod too has been equally active in ISC and continuously supporting and participating in various sports, entertainment and literary committees throughout these years. She became ISC Women’s Forum Convener in 2016-2017. Their daughter, Aarti Prabhu is an IT Engineer from NITK Suratkal, working in Bangalore. Son, Ajith Prabhu finished his Masters in Mechanical Engineering and Management in Industrial Design in Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK and at present doing his internship there. Both Aarti and Ajith are alumni of Abu Dhabi Indian School and both have represented National level CBSE Badminton meet. Also, Aarti was a Gold medalist in the school for scoring 100 in Mathematics in SSLC.

Following are few of his contributions and achievements:

•          Hon. Asst. Treasurer of ISC for consecutive years from 2005 till 2007

•          Hon. Treasurer of ISC in 2011.

•          Member of Finance Committee of ISC new infrastructure and premises from approval till completion.

•          In 2016, initiated the participation of ISC members as officials for International Yoga Day organized by Indian Embassy

•          In 2017, initiated the participation of children as officials to help the organizers so that children could learn their social responsibility and become good citizens.

•          In 2012, initiated ladies throw ball tournament in ISC and now it is extended to men too.

•          Member of IPEF since its inception in 2014. Also served as its Governing board member in the same year.

•          Founder member of ‘UAE GSB group’ since its formation in 2004

•          Committee member of ‘Gandhi Sahitya Vedi’ Abu Dhabi

•                    Treasurer of Abu Dhabi Karnataka Sangha

•          Head of Finance and member of other committees of ‘World Tulu Convention’ held in Dubai - 2018
